Speculatives Fail To Maintain Tempo On Lacklustre Trading

The trading sentiment on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) dampened yesterday and the NSE-50 index closed at 1153.70 points against the previous close of 1158.35, a loss of 4.65 points.

The Midcap index closed at 1185.50, a loss of 6.15 points over the previous close of 1191.65 points. The total trading turnover on the exchange touched Rs 1,678.25 crore with over 6.12 crore shares changing hands.

Sources said the market opened on a positive note, however, equities could not maintain their opening levels and declined during the course of mid-session. Tata Chemicals was the major gainer and it appreciated over 7 per cent to close at Rs 176.40 (Rs 164.85). The other counters which saw hectic activity included Bhel at Rs 391.70 (Rs 375.75). The total traded turnover in this counter touched Rs 22.42 crore.

 

Among the other gainers were, IFCI which closed at Rs 33.20 against the previous close of Rs 31.10, PICL at Rs 137.15 (Rs 128.70), Reliance Petroleum at Rs 18.05 (Rs 17.15).

The top five losers were, Ashok Leyland which closed at Rs 69.50 (Rs 72.95), Colgate Palmolive at Rs 289.60 (Rs 300.80), Oriental Bank of Commerce at Rs 70.75 (Rs 73.30), TVS-Suzuki at Rs 435.15 (Rs 449.80) and HLL at Rs 1288.95 (Rs 1329.30). HDFC also witnessed hectic activity with the scrip touching a 52-week high of Rs 3645 during intra day trading, a gain of Rs 135.75 over the previous days close. Marketmen said that FIIs were very active at the HDFC counter.

The ITC counter remained relatively quiet and the traded turnover in the exchange touched Rs 280.73 crore. The scrip closed at Rs 496.45 against the previous close of Rs 496.45. Tata Tea closed at Rs 394.60 (Rs 396.45) and the traded turnover in the counter touched Rs 21.20 crore.
