Brazil are out of the World Cup from group stage! That's a headline you wouldn't have imagined before the Fifa World Cup 2018 began, but as inconceivable was the headline: Germany are out of the World Cup after the first stage, and it has happened just now! And hence, while for the sake of the tournament we want Brazil to advance to the Round of 16, there are chances they might not be able to make the cut. Here's what the Brazilians need to do to advance:

Brazil have been underwhelming in their displays in this edition of the World Cup. Switzerland frustrated them in a 1-1 draw. Philipe Coutinho rescued the Brazilians in that match with his trademark curling shot. The Selecao did manage a victory against Costa Rica in a 2-0 win but they left the scoring to the very end of the match. And though they sit top of the table, their place in the Round of 16 isn't certain yet.

The South Americans have been far from impressive in their gameplay in this edition of World Cup, but have somehow managed to grind out the results.

This is how Group E currently stands:

So here are certain combinations for Brazil to reach the knock-outs.

Costa Rica are already out of the World Cup. That leaves Brazil, Switzerland and Serbia in the contention for the two spots from Group E. Brazil have to avoid a loss, either a win or draw would be enough for them to advance. Brazil can advance even of they lose against Serbia, provided Switzerland lose against Costa Rica by a greater margin. Switzerland too will advance with either a win or draw. Switzerland can advance despite losing against Costa Rica if Brazil beats Serbia. Serbia advances with a win and potentially with a draw, if Costa Rica beats Switzerland by multiple goals.

If they do advance, Brazil will meet either Sweden or Mexico. If Brazil finish top of the table, they will face Mexico and if they finish second, they will meet Sweden. A considerably easy fixture in both scenarios. But, they will have to advance first.
