3COM to double India team

3Com Corporation, a US-based provider of networking solutions plans to enter the security market with its Intrusion Prevention System (IPS). In January, 3Com had acquired Tipping Point, a Texas-based provider of network-based intrusion prevention system for $450 million.
 
3Com claims to have about 60 per cent share in US in network-based Intrusion Prevention System and with the acquisition, the company sees a larger role in India.
 
As part of its plans to extend reach in India, the company has launched X505, an integrated security platform built on Intrusion Prevention System technology combining inspection firewall, IPSec VPN, bandwidth management, web content filtering and dynamic routing.
 
"The concept of prevention is new as most of us in India use detection platform," says Denny Sam, technical consultant, 3Com.
 
He added that Intrusion Prevention Systems add intelligence into the network with the ability to inspect traffic, classify it and take action according to policy as well as the capability for automatic, preemptive threat protection through an update service.
 
The company has its Indian HO in Bangalore and has a development centre in Hyderabad. It is planning to more than double its headcount from 80. The development centre mainly works on VoIP and IP telephony.
 
3Com is yet to register profits but the company expects to grab larger market share in India and start making profits by the first quarter of 2007. The company at present has a topline of $700 million and has registered a 9 per cent year-on-year and sequential growth.
