Wipro sets up dedicated centre for NEC

Wipro Technologies, the global IT services division of Wipro, has been selected by NEC Electronics Corporation to provide semiconductor design services.

NEC Electronics, a Japanese company supplies system on chip (SoC), microcontroller and discrete semiconductor solutions for a variety of industrial and consumer electronics.

The dedicated development centre for NEC Electronics has been set up by Wipro at its Electronics City campus in Bangalore. "It will provide front-end and back-end design services and IP to NEC Electronics for application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and microcontrollers in the digital consumer and automotive areas. Wipro will also work on various designs ranging from 150 nm, 130 nm up to 55 nm," said Sudip Nandy, president (Telecom and Product Engineering Solutions), Wipro Technologies.

NEC Electronics President & CEO Toshio Nakajima said the company is keen on partnering more Indian companies specialising in semiconductor design services. "We are engaging two more companies - iWave Systems and GDA Technologies - for other services. We already have a partnership with KPIT Cummins," he added.

The company has sales and manufacturing facilities around the world. It also opened a liaison office in Bangalore to tap the growing Indian electronics market. "Besides, most of our MNC clients from Europe and US have operations in India. We aim to achieve $20 million in local sales and $100 million in new designs to MNCs with operations in India by fiscal 2010," Nakajima stated.
