From the moment Abhishek Sharma set the tone, the innings became a sustained assault. Sanju Samson fell early, caught in the deep off Kyle Jamieson, but Abhishek showed no inclination to rein in his strokes. Whether it was pace or spin, length or variation, he found a response, smashing eight sixes and five fours in a blistering 35-ball 84 at a strike rate of 240. Even when New Zealand’s seamers found a hint of grip with the slower ones, Abhishek adjusted quickly, if not completely neutralised the threat.
Ishan Kishan’s stay was brief, but Suryakumar Yadav ensured the momentum did not dip. The India captain mixed innovation with authority in a 32 off 22 balls, keeping the run rate well above 11 an over despite wickets falling at regular intervals. New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner rotated his bowlers but found little control, with both seam and spin disappearing into the stands.
The decisive phase of the innings came after Shivam Dube’s cameo ended. Santner brought himself back into the attack, hoping to stem the flow, but Hardik Pandya had other ideas. Hardik thumped the left-arm spinner with calculated aggression, underlining India’s intent to push beyond 230. He made 25 off 16 balls before falling to Jacob Duffy, but by then the platform was set.
Rinku Singh then finished the job in trademark fashion. Calm amid the chaos, he struck an unbeaten 44 off 20 balls, including three sixes, ensuring India did not lose steam at the death. Axar Patel fell cheaply, but Arshdeep Singh chipped in with a boundary as India closed on an imposing 238.

For New Zealand, Duffy was the most economical with figures of two for 27, while Jamieson picked up two wickets but conceded 54 runs. Santner’s three overs went for 37, and Ish Sodhi also struggled to contain the flow.

Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl in the first T20 International against India, opting to test a refreshed Nagpur surface.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav said his side had been inclined to bowl first after sensing the possibility of dew later in the evening, but stressed that batting first held no fears. “We felt there could be dew around 8.30 during practice, but we are comfortable putting runs on the board. We have done well batting first,” he said. Shreyas Iyer, Harshit Rana, Ravi Bishnoi and Kuldeep Yadav were the players to miss out.
Santner backs bowling-first call
New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner said the decision to field was based on his assessment of the wicket. “It looks like a pretty good surface and potentially a high-scoring one,” he said, adding that the series would serve as valuable preparation ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Santner confirmed a three-seamer attack, with Kristian Clarke set to make his T20 International debut alongside Kyle Jamieson and Jacob Duffy. “It is never easy touring India, especially in their home conditions, but this is a fresh series and a good test for us,” he said.
India vs New Zealand 1st T20I: Nagpur pitch report by Deep Dasgupta and Simon Doull
Former players Deep Dasgupta and Simon Doull struck a more measured tone in their pitch assessment. Although Nagpur has hosted more T20 Internationals than any other venue in India, this is the first match here since the square was relaid in 2024.
With boundaries measuring 66 metres square and 76 metres straight, the pitch has been left with around three to four millimetres of grass. While the overall presentation drew praise, visible cracks and a slightly soft base suggested the surface may play slower than typical T20 tracks.
Dasgupta and Doull felt batting would not be straightforward, with the ball expected to come on at a medium-to-slow pace. Seamers may need to rely on accuracy rather than movement, while any early moisture could briefly assist spin. Despite a fast outfield, they ruled out the likelihood of a run-fest, suggesting totals in excess of 220 were improbable.
India’s game plan: aggression up top, control later
India’s batting hinges on intent from the start, with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson forming a high-impact opening pair. In the absence of Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan slots in at No 3, carrying strong recent T20 numbers into the series.
Suryakumar, despite not having crossed fifty in a T20 International since October 2024, remains central to India’s approach. The middle overs are expected to be shaped by Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel, while the pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Varun has made India one of the most efficient sides at the death in recent seasons.
New Zealand’s match-ups to watch
For New Zealand, Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell will be key to navigating India’s pace attack, particularly Bumrah and Arshdeep, who have enjoyed favourable match-ups against them. Santner’s left-arm spin could also be influential if the pitch offers any grip, given his past success against Suryakumar and Samson.
Jacob Duffy is expected to lead the wicket-taking effort, with Jamieson providing bounce and Clarke adding an element of the unknown on debut.
With contrasting readings of the surface and two well-matched sides, the series opener promises a revealing contest under Nagpur’s lights.
