Despite a formidable performance with the bat from their top and middle-order batters, the Indian women’s team bounced back hard with the help of all-round performances from Amanjot Kaur and Deepti Sharma to beat Sri Lanka by 59 runs in the opening fixture of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 in Guwahati to start their maiden ICC trophy hunt in style. The Women in Blue will next face Pakistan in their second game on the coming Sunday.
Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to field first. The decision worked as Udeshika Prabodhani got the big wicket of Smriti Mandhana (8) in the fourth over to deal an early strike. Harleen Deol and Pratika Rawal then stabilised the Indian innings and took the team’s total to 43 for 1 after 10 overs before rain arrived at the stadium, bringing a halt to play.
The game finally resumed after over an hour’s delay with 48 overs a side. Harleen and Pratika then brought up their 50-run stand for the second wicket in 82 balls. The partnership finally came to an end after Pratika Rawal (37) lost her wicket to Inoka Ranaweera in the 20th over.
Harleen Deol (48) then fell just two short of her much-deserved half-century after also losing her wicket to Inoka Ranaweera, who on the very next ball removed Jemimah Rodrigues (0) and Harmanpreet Kaur (21) two balls later to completely shell-shock the Indian team.
Chamari Athapaththu then got the wicket of Richa Ghosh (2) to further add to India’s misery. Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur then stitched a crucial half-century stand for the seventh wicket to keep the match alive for India. Amanjot Kaur then brought up her maiden ODI half-century to take India’s total to 210 for 6 after 40 overs before the rain returned once again to halt play.
The game restarted after a brief delay but cost each team one more over, making it a 47-over-a-side contest. Amanjot and Deepti continued to march ahead and brought up a 100-run stand for the seventh wicket.
Their stand was finally broken in the 44th over after Udeshika removed Amanjot Kaur on 57. But Deepti continued her innings and completed her 16th ODI half-century off 50 balls.
Deepti Sharma (53) lost her wicket on the final ball of the innings off Achini, but by then she had added 42 runs for the eighth wicket with Sneh Rana (28 not out) off just 21 balls to help India finish their innings at 269 for 8 after 47 overs.
In reply, Sri Lanka, chasing a revised target of 271, lost their first wicket early too after Kriti Gaud clean bowled Hasini Perera on 14. Skipper Athapaththu, with Harshitha, then stitched a half-century stand for the second wicket to stabilise Sri Lanka’s innings before losing her wicket to Deepti Sharma on 43.
Harshitha Samarawickrama’s resistance also came to an end on 29 after Shree Charni trapped her in front in the 23rd over. Vishmi Gunaratne (11) was the next batter to depart after losing her wicket to Amanjot Kaur.
Deepti Sharma then removed Kavisha Dilhari (15) and Anushka Sanjeewani (6) to help India take full control of the match. Nilakshi de Silva (35) then played some big shots to keep the match alive but eventually lost her wicket to Sneh Rana, who then removed Sugandika Kumari (10) to push the match far away from Sri Lanka. Achini Kulasuriya (17) then lost her wicket to Shree Charni as Sri Lanka were pushed to the cusp of being all out. Finally, Pratika Rawal trapped Inoka Ranaweera (3) in front to end Sri Lanka’s innings on 211 in 45.4 overs and hand India a 59-run win.
