The country's coal imports dropped 4.2 per cent to 213.10 million tonnes (MT) in the April-January period of the current fiscal year and with seaborne prices showing an uptick, imports are likely to remain subdued in the near term.
The decline underscores the country's push towards self-reliance in coal production amid surging domestic output, even as global thermal coal prices firm up due to supply constraints and geopolitical tensions.
According to data compiled by mjunction services ltd, a B2B e-commerce platform and joint venture of SAIL and Tata Steel, during April-January period of the current financial year, non-coking coal import was at 127.80 MT, lower than 141.18 MT imported during the same period last fiscal year.
Coking coal import was at 50.39 MT during April-January 2025-26, up from 45.83 MT in the year-ago period.

In a move aimed at citizen participation, the PWD has introduced QR code-enabled display boards on roads undergoing strengthening, officials said on Saturday.
PWD minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the initiative seeks to transform how people engage with public infrastructure projects by providing easy access to key information while also creating a direct channel for feedback.
"Transparency is not just about sharing information; it is about listening to the people. With this initiative, citizens will not only know the details of road works but will also be able to give their feedback directly," the Public Works Department (PWD) minister said.
According to officials, the display boards will be installed within seven days of the completion of any road work.
"These will be placed at prominent public locations such as bus queue shelters, major intersections, and other high footfall areas to ensure visibility," Singh said.

With 70 per cent of its best-selling electric vehicle model Windsor coming from non-metros, JSW MG Motor India is stepping up efforts to accelerate sales by leveraging the opportunity through increased awareness, according to a senior company official.
The MG Windsor has clocked cumulative sales of about 65,000 units since its launch in October 2024. Of the total sales of the model, four metros -- Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai accounted for 30 per cent and rest of India contributed to 70 per cent.
Commenting on the trend, JSW MG Motor India Chief Commercial Officer, Vinay Raina said EV sales were initially concentrated in metro cities, largely due to limited awareness and the absence of products that truly appealed to the masses.

In a bid to strengthen the EV infrastructure, the Delhi government is likely to urge vehicle manufacturers to set up charging stations under its new EV policy, a senior government official said on Friday.
With the existing electric vehicle (EV) policy set to lapse by March-end, the government plans to finalise and notify the revised policy by then, looking to table the policy in the upcoming budget session.
"We have asked around 400 venders and vehicle-makers to explore setting up EV charging stations, and the Delhi government will provide all required assistance," an official said.
With its pollution-control action plan promoting greater adoption of electric vehicles, the Delhi government plans to add 7,000 EV charging stations across the city.
Currently, EV charging stations are mostly situated at Namo Bharat and Delhi Metro stations, and set up by power discoms. Delhi has around 8,800 EV charging stations at present, according to official data.
