Turkey coup trail begins against 500 suspects

Ankara (Turkey), Aug 02 (ANI): The massive trial against nearly 500 suspects, who are accused of leading last year's failed coup attempt in Turkey and carrying out attacks from an air base in the capital Ankara, started on Tuesday. The suspects include a number of generals and military pilots.

The United States based cleric Fethullah Gulen is the main defendant in the case. Gulen is the person who is blamed by the government for the coup and the 76-year-old will be tried in absentia.

Former Air Force commander Akin Ozturk and other defendants stationed at an Ankara air base are accused of directing the coup and bombing key government buildings, including the parliament. Families of killed or wounded people during the coup flock outside the court premises and protested against the suspects.

The protest turned violent when some protestors tried to pelt stones at accused and break through the police lines.
