Hyundai Motor India is looking to tap growth opportunities in the rural areas with rise in demand for aspirational products like sports utility vehicles and feature-rich models, according to company's Chief Operating Officer Tarun Garg. The country's second largest carmaker is looking to enhance presence in the smaller towns and rural areas with more sales outlets and also initiatives like deployment of mobile service vans. The automaker's sales outlets in the rural areas have crossed the 600-mark already and it has also increased its manpower to over 5,000 people in such places. Hyundai's sales in the rural areas has crossed the one lakh-mark last year. "Almost 18 per cent of our sales are now coming from rural areas. It used to be about 16.5 per cent. Commercial vehicle maker Ashok Leyland total vehicle sales, including exports, rose 23 per cent to 17,200 units in January. The company had reported its total vehicle sales at 13,939 units in the year-ago period, it said on Wednesday. Domestic sales (M&HCV and LCV) in the reporting month were recorded at 16,198 units, a growth of 27 per cent over 12,709 units in January 2022. M&HCV domestic sales were at 10,108 vehicles during the previous month, logging a 34 per cent growth over January 2022 when the company had sold 7,561 units in the local market. At the same time, LCV domestic sales spiked 18 per cent at 6,090 units in January, the company said.
The automobile industry on Wednesday termed the Budget for 2023-24 as growth-oriented, saying the proposed measures will drive sustainable yet inclusive growth at a rapid pace. Automobile industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers President Vinod Aggarwal said a 33 per cent increase in capital outlay with an effective provision of Rs 13.7 lakh crore will spur growth in the economy, resulting in a positive impact on the domestic automobile industry. "Another appreciable feature of the budget is putting more money in the hands of the individuals by lowering effective personal income tax rates that should increase consumption and consequently lead to more demand," he added. Tata Motors on Wednesday reported a 6.4 per cent growth in total vehicle sales at 81,069 units in January. In the year-ago period, the company's total vehicle sales stood at 76,210 units. Domestic vehicle sales were up 10 per cent at 79,681 units in the previous month over 72,485 units in 2022, Tata Motors said in a statement. The company said its passenger vehicles domestic sales, including electric vehicles, during the month under review stood at 48,289 units, which was 18 per cent higher when compared to 40,942 units in the corresponding period of the last year. The total commercial vehicles domestic sales, however, declined 7 per cent to 32,780 units in January 2023 from 35,268 units a year ago, it added.
