The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has in a status report submitted to the High Court put forth several measures being undertaken to help people access toilets in the city. These measures include allowing the toilets in 172 'Indira Canteen', which was meant only for the staff, for public use. The city civic body has also proposed permitting the general public to use toilets situated in public restaurants and hotels. The Special Commissioner (Health) and Chief Health Officer (Health) have been directed to take necessary steps and pass necessary orders/circulars in this regard. The BBMP will also be inviting tenders for construction of 100 toilets exclusively for women, called 'SHE' toilets. Alternatively, the BBMP has also proposed to construct such toilets on its own and allotted a budget of Rs 25.50 crore for it in the 2024-25 Budget. Bengaluru-based space start-up Pixxel plans to launch a series of small, home-built satellites -- Fireflies -- from June that could have a finer look at the Earth with its five-metre resolution hyper-spectral imagery. Pixxel recently launched its satellite manufacturing unit -- Mega Pixxel -- in Bengaluru where it can assemble, integrate and test 40 satellites weighing 100 kilogrammes every year as the nascent company aims to take a leap in the space sector. "If you are looking at 100-kilogramme micro-satellites which are able to do a whole lot of stuff in terms of actual commercial viability, we can do 20 of them at a single point in time. Passenger traffic at Bangalore International Airport surged 35.3 per cent on a year-on-year basis to 37.2-million in calendar 2023, the private airport operator said on Friday. The facility had handled a total of 27.50-million passengers in the January-December period of 2022. During the previous year, it said, Cargo volumes rose 2 per cent on a year-on-year basis with the facility processing a total of 4,22,644 MT of cargo during CY 2023. The Bengaluru international airport had a footfall of 37.2 million passengers in 2023, marking a 35.3 per cent increase compared to the previous calendar year, airport authorities said on Friday. In a regulatory filing, Bengaluru-based Prestige Estates Projects Ltd informed that it clocked sale bookings of Rs 5,326.1 crore during October-December FY24, up 111 per cent year-on-year. During the quarter, Prestige Estates sold 5.46 million square feet area with an average realisation of Rs 9,762 per square feet (for apartments /villas). In April-December FY24, Prestige Estates' sale bookings rose 81 per cent annually to Rs 16,333.4 crore. Cybercrimes shot up by a whopping 77 per cent in 2023 in Bengaluru compared to the previous calendar year with the city police registering 17,623 cases, according to official data. As many as 6,422 cybercrime cases were reported in Bengaluru in 2021 and 9,940 in 2022, shows the data shared by the city police. Out of the 17,623 cases reported in 2023, the police could detect only 1,271, it said. A senior police officer said cybercrime has been the biggest challenge for the city police and such cases are now being registered in all police stations across the city, leading to a spike in complaints. "Even complaints from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and complaints received at 112 (all-in-one emergency helpline number) gets converted into FIRs. Through the social media accounts of the city police, the Bengaluru Police has also started its awareness campaign by giving cyber tips," he said. Bengaluru has witnessed a significant increase in crime against women in 2023 with the city police registering 3,260 cases including 1,135 related to molestation, shows official data. The police attributed the rise to enhanced awareness, initiatives of filing suo moto cases and registration of e-FIRs, among other factors.
