Return on capital very low, expects tariff hike: Bharti Airtel chairman

The Return on capital in the telecom business is very low and a tariff hike is likely to be the mid of this year, Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said here on Monday. While responding to a PTI query at the Mobile World Congress, Mittal said that the company has a healthy balance sheet and there is no need to raise any more capital. "Lot of capital has been injected that has made the balance sheet strong but the return on capital of this industry is very low. That needs to change. We are talking of small increments that need to come in the Indian tariff situation. I hope half (by mid) of this year," Mittal said. Bharti Airtel crosses 10 million unique customer mark on 5G network

Telecom operator Bharti Airtel on Monday announced that it has crossed the 10 million unique 5G user mark on its network. In a statement, the company said it is well poised to cover every town and key rural areas with Airtel 5G services by the end of March 2024. The company informed it has surpassed the 10 million unique 5G user milestone, on its network. In November 2022, Airtel became the first and only operator to have 1 million unique customers on its network within 30 days of its commercial launch, the statement added. It is pertinent to mention that high speed 5G services were launched in the country, on October 1, 2022. The 5G services powers ultra-low latency connections, which allow downloading full-length high-quality video or movie to a mobile device in a matter of seconds (even in crowded areas). Bharti Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal on Wednesday asserted that Average Revenue Per User (ARPUs) rising to Rs 300-level is "critical" for respectable return of capital employed, and hoped that it will "happen in due course". The top honcho also outlined the 'future of Airtel' strategy entailing broad themes around a resilient and diverse portfolio, rural push into high-potential villages, and opportunities in the top 150 cities, among others. "We believe that ARPU needs to go up and the ARPU of Rs 300 is critical for a respectable return of capital employed. Bharti Airtel Q3 net profit jumps 91% to Rs 1,588 cr; ARPU rises to Rs 193

Telecom operator Bharti Airtel on Tuesday reported a 91.5 per cent year-on-year rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 1,588 crore for the October-December quarter of 2022-23. Total revenue rose nearly 20 per cent year-on-year to Rs 35,804 crore in the December quarter (Q3FY23) "backed by strong and consistent performance delivery across the portfolio", the company said in a statement. Its consolidated net income (after exceptional items) stood at Rs 1,588 crore for the just ended quarter, translating into an increase of 91.5 per cent year-on-year. The consolidated net income (before exceptional items) at Rs 1,994 crore, was up by 147 per cent year-on-year, it added. Bharti Airtel Managing Director Gopal Vittal said the company delivered another quarter of consistent and competitive growth across businesses. Bharti Airtel acquires 23% stake in Indus Towers held by Nettle Infra

Telecom operator Bharti Airtel has increased its direct stake in Indus Towers by acquiring 23.01 per cent shares held by its completely owned subsidiary Nettle Infrastructure, a regulatory filing said on Saturday. Bharti Airtel now holds 47.95 per cent stake in Indus Towers. The telecom operator earlier directly held 24.94 per cent stake and 23.01 per cent through its subsidiary Nettle Infrastructure. Bharti Airtel has acquired the 23.01 per cent stake of Indus Towers from Nettle to directly own 47.95 per cent in the mobile tower firm. This is pursuant to the "composite scheme of amalgamation approved by the Hon'ble National Company Law Tribunal, Chandigarh bench, vide its order dated January 25, 2023 and becoming effective from February 1, 2023", the filing said.

Airtel Africa Q3 net profit rises 7.5% to Rs 1,586 cr, revenue up 10.7%

Telecom operator Bharti Airtel said its African arm Airtel Africa on Thursday posted a 7.5 per cent growth in profit after tax at USD 193 million, about Rs 1,586 crore, in the third quarter ended December 2022. The company had posted a profit after tax (PAT) of USD 180 million in the same period a year ago. "Providing affordable, innovative and essential services to customers in our 14 markets with unparalleled network quality and customer service is integral to our ambition of transforming lives across Africa. These strong results are testament to this strategy despite the current macro-economic and geopolitical uncertainties," Aitel Africa Chief Executive Officer Segun Ogunsanya said in a statement. The revenue of Airtel Africa during the reported quarter increased by 10.7 per cent to USD 1,350 million from USD 1,219 million in December 2021 quarter.
