India-UK FTA a positive step; car prices unlikely to change: BMW, Mercedes

Mercedes-Benz and BMW have termed the India-UK free trade agreement (FTA) a positive development while noting that it would not have much bearing on the prices of luxury cars in the country. Last week, India and the UK sealed a landmark FTA that will lower tariffs on 99 per cent of Indian exports and would make it easier for British firms to export whisky, cars and other products to India, besides boosting the overall trade basket. The aim is to double two-way commerce by 2030 from the present USD 60 billion India has included adequate safeguards in the agreement to protect its sensitive sectors and in the automobile segment, the import duty will be reduced over 10-15 years. The duty concession on imports of petrol and diesel engine vehicles from the UK is limited to a pre-defined quota. "Fundamentally, we have always advocated free trade as a multinational company, because we feel that free trade helps in better growth... So I think for us, definitely it's a real welcome move, ...

Tesla's entry will boost India EV market, competition not a concern: BMW

BMW Group India is unfazed by the prospect of Tesla entering the electric vehicle market here and feels it will help grow the segment, according to its Managing Director and CEO Vikram Pawah. The group, which sold a total of 1,249 units of electric cars in India across two brands -- BMW and MINI -- has already sold 646 units in the first quarter of 2025 and is keeping its forecast of 15 per cent of its total sales in India coming from EVs, Pawah told PTI in an interview. "I think the market should grow. Anytime there's more competition, we've seen that the market grows," he said when asked how BMW is looking at how the EV market will shape up with Tesla entering India. When asked about competition from the American electric car maker, Pawah said,"In all the markets in the world, we coexist. We all coexist and you can see last year figures worldwide, we were the ones who were growing. We grew in electric sales worldwide." Not many manufacturers can talk about growth in electric

Bombay HC not to release Mihir in BMW hit-run case over 'illegal' arrest

The Bombay High Court on Monday refused to release Mihir Shah, the main accused in a BMW hit-and-run case, on the ground of "illegal" arrest. Shah, the 24-year-old son of a former Shiv Sena leader, and his driver Rajrishi Bidawat had filed petitions in the HC claiming they have been illegally detained and sought immediate release. Shah was arrested on July 9, two days after he allegedly rammed his BMW car into a two-wheeler in Mumbai's Worli area, killing 45-year-old woman Kaveri Nakhwa and leaving her husband Pradeep injured. His driver Bidawat, who was also present in the car at the time of the accident, was arrested on the day of the incident. As per their pleas, the police had not informed them the grounds of their arrest at the time, which they claimed was in violation of the law. A division bench of Justices Bharati Dangre and Manjusha Deshpande on Monday dismissed the petitions. "Both the petitions are dismissed," the court said. The duo sought their release, claiming any
