China has announced the expulsion of a Canadian diplomat in retaliation for Ottawa's ordering a Chinese consular official to leave over alleged threats he made against a Canadian lawmaker and his family. The Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said China was deploying a reciprocal countermeasure to Canada's unscrupulous move, which it said it firmly opposes. It said the Canadian diplomat based in the business hub of Shanghai has been asked to leave by May 13 and that China reserves the right to take further actions in response. Canada earlier on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government is expelling a Chinese diplomat whom Canada's spy agency alleged was involved in a plot to intimidate an opposition lawmaker and his relatives in Hong Kong. A senior government official said Toronto-based diplomat Zhao Wei has five days to leave the country.

Pope Francis said on Sunday that talks were underway to return colonial-era artefacts in the Vatican Museum that were acquired from Indigenous peoples in Canada and voiced a willingness to return other problematic objects in the Vatican's collection on a case-by-case basis. The Seventh Commandment comes to mind: If you steal something you have to give it back, Francis said during an airborne press conference en route home from Hungary. Recently, Francis returned to Greece the three fragments of the Parthenon sculptures that had been in the Vatican Museums' collection for two centuries. The pope said on Sunday that the restitution was the right gesture and that when such returns were possible, museums should undertake them. In the case where you can return things, where it's necessary to make a gesture, better to do it, he said. Sometimes you can't, if there are no possibilities political, real or concrete possibilities. But in the cases where you can restitute, please do it. It's .

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation paused its use of Twitter on Monday after the social media platform owned by Elon Musk stamped CBC's account with a label the public broadcaster says is intended to undermine its credibility. Twitter labelled CBC/Radio-Canada "government-funded media" the same label that prompted National Public Radio in the US to similarly quit Twitter last Wednesday. Twitter can be a powerful tool for our journalists to communicate with Canadians, but it undermines the accuracy and professionalism of the work they do to allow our independence to be falsely described in this way, CBC spokesman Leon Mar said in a statement announcing the change Monday afternoon. Consequently, we will be pausing our activity on our corporate Twitter account and all CBC and Radio-Canada news-related accounts," the statement said. CBC has sent a letter to Twitter asking the company to re-examine the designation. CBC does not meet those criteria, Mar argued, because it is publicl
