CCI notifies setting up of regional offices in Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has notified setting up of its regional offices in Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai. The regional offices will help the regulator in creating more awareness about competition law as well as provide easier access to people. The watchdog keeps a tab on unfair business practices across sectors in the market place as well as takes various initiatives to promote competition. The Southern Regional Office is in Chennai while the Eastern and Western Regional Offices are in Kolkata and Mumbai, respectively. These offices were inaugurated earlier. In terms of territorial jurisdiction, seven states and Union Territories (UTs), including Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, will be under the Southern Regional Office, according to a notification dated May 16. Building projects grew by over 94% in Chennai's residential segment in Q1

Constructed projects in the residential segment in the city grew by 94.89 per cent during the January-March 2023 quarter, a study undertaken by real estate body CREDAI said on Saturday. The Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India in its report said central Chennai accounted for 29 per cent of the projects followed by the city's south at 26 per cent. Despite the increase in the sales of constructed projects, the number of units registered during the quarter dropped by nine per cent. During the first quarter of calendar year 2023 (January-March), as many as 5,759 residential units were registered as against 2,955 units registered during the January-March 2022 period. Chennai Port to be cruise tourism hub on the East Coast: Minister Sonowal

The Centre has planned to make Chennai the hub for cruise tourism on the East Coast, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said here on Sunday. For the first time in the history of Chennai Port, a continuous cruise service was operated from June to September 2022, he said. Sonowal was here to review the performance of the Chennai Port Trust and its subsidiary Kamarajar Port Ltd along with senior officials including the chairperson of the Ports, Sunil Paliwal. "We are going to make Chennai Port a hub of cruise tourism in the East Coast." Sonowal told reporters. Chennai ranks among top 5 in digital payment transactions in 2022: Report

Chennai has emerged as one of the top digital payment transactions cities in 2022 in the country, a report by payment services firm Worldline India said on Tuesday. The capital city in terms of volume has made 14.3 million transactions with a value of USD 35.5 billion, Worldline India said in its report. Chennai garners $2.88 bn investment in real estate sector between 2018-22

Chennai has garnered investments worth USD 2.88 billion in real estate during the period 2018-22, making the city among the top five in the country, a study undertaken by real estate consulting firm CBRE South Asia said on Tuesday. Across India, the real estate sector attracted investments of USD 43.3 billion between 2018-2022. Chennai recorded investments totaling to USD 0.9 billion during 2018-22 into land acquisition accounting eight per cent of the total land acquire since 2018. Mitsubishi Electric will set up a plant to manufacture air conditioners and compressors at Mahindra World City Developers' industrial park in Chennai with an investment of USD 222 million. The new factory will be Mitsubishi Electric's first air conditioners and compressors manufacturing facility in India. This factory will cater to the growing air conditioner demand in the domestic market and is expected to begin operations by October 2025, Mahindra Lifespace Developers said in a regulatory filing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday flagged off the Chennai-Coimbatore Vande Bharat Express, which is expected to cut down the travel time between the state capital here and the western industrial city by more than one hour. At a function at the Dr MGR Chennai Central Railway Station, the PM flagged off the inaugural special, loaded with modern features and passenger amenities.
