China launches new crew to its space station to expand exploration

China launched a new three-person crew to its orbiting space station early Wednesday as the country seeks to expand its exploration of outer space with missions to the moon and beyond. China built its own space station after being excluded from the International Space Station, mainly because of US concerns over the People's Liberation Army, the Chinese Communist Party's military arm's overall control over the space program. China's moon program is part of a growing rivalry with the US and others, including Japan and India. The team of two men and one woman will replace the astronauts who have lived on the Tiangong space station for the last six months. They are expected to stay until April or May of next year. The new mission commander, Cai Xuzhe, went to space in the Shenzhou-14 mission in 2022, while the other two, Song Lingdong and Wang Haoze, are first-time space travellers, born in the 1990s. Song was an air force pilot and Wang an engineer with the China Aerospace Science and

S Africa launches scheme to woo tourists from India, China to boost jobs

South Africa has launched an innovative new scheme to increase tourism, especially from India and China, inviting tour operators from those two countries to join their local counterparts in signing up to the scheme. Two months after Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber, conceptualised the concept, his Department on Tuesday announced the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS), which is aimed at enhancing job creation that flows from increased tourism. This followed discussion with the tourism ministry and the tourism sector in the country to find ways of eliminating visa inefficiency and red tape which had throttled South Africa's ability to attract more tourists from these two burgeoning source markets. To resolve bottlenecks and reposition Home Affairs as an economic enabler, the Department has today gazetted a call for expression of interest by established tour operators from South Africa and abroad who wish to sign up to the scheme to bring more tourists from China and India

India-China disengagement at two friction points in its final stages

Troop disengagement at two friction points at Demchok and Depsang Plains in eastern Ladakh following a key agreement firmed up between India and China is in the "final stages", official sources said on Tuesday. On October 25, Army sources had said the process is likely to get completed by October 28-29. The agreement framework was "signed" first at the diplomatic level and then military-level talks took place, the Army sources had said, adding the nitty-gritty of the agreement was worked in the Corps Commander-level talks, which was signed kast week. Adhering to agreements between the two sides, Indian troops then begun to pull back equipment to rear locations in these areas. The disengagement at the two friction points is in its "final stages", an official source said on Tuesday. Sources last week said the agreement was arrived at only for these two friction points, and "talks were still underway" for other areas. To avert demographic crisis, Chinese govt brings new policy for couples

China has announced a slew of policies, including a childbirth subsidy system and tax cuts for parents, aimed at motivating couples to have more children to halt the falling birth-rates in order to deal with the looming demographic crisis. A directive issued by the State Council or the central cabinet on Monday outlined 13 targeted measures designed to enhance childbirth support services; expand childcare systems; strengthen support in education, housing and employment, and cultivate a birth-friendly social atmosphere. The falling birth rates resulted in China losing the most populous nation in the world to India last year. The latest initiative also includes improvements to the childbirth subsidy system and personal income tax relief related to childbirth, official media reported. Key provisions include extending the maternity insurance scheme to individuals in flexible employment and rural migrant workers who have already participated in the basic medical insurance scheme. Treasury issues rule to block US from helping China develop advanced tech

The US Treasury Department, seeking to keep the Chinese military from gaining an edge in advanced technologies, issued a rule Monday to restrict and monitor American investments in China in artificial intelligence, computer chips and quantum computing. The finalised rule arises from an executive order issued in August 2023 by President Joe Biden. The order sought to limit the access that "countries of concern" specifically China, including Hong Kong and Macao have to American dollars to fund technologies that could be used, for example, to break codes or develop next-generation fighter jets. It will take effect January 2. "US investments ... must not be used to help countries of concern develop their military, intelligence and cyber capabilities," said Paul Rosen, assistant Treasury secretary for investment security. He noted the investments can mean more than just money: they can deliver "intangible benefits," including managerial help and assistance finding top talent and tapping

China announces fourth manned mission to space station with new crew

China on Tuesday announced plans to launch its fourth manned mission to replace the crew of its space station and named a three-member squad, including a woman, to man the low-orbit station for the next six months. China's crewed spaceship Shenzhou-19 is scheduled to be launched at 4.27 a.m.(Beijing Time) on Wednesday from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in the country's northwest, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced. The launch will use a Long March-2F carrier rocket, said Lin Xiqiang, the deputy director of CMSA, at a press conference at the Jiuquan centre. Shenzhou-19 is the 33rd flight mission of China's manned space programme and the fourth manned mission during the application and development stage of China's space station.
