Won't allow anyone to go on rampage in Karnataka: Dy CM Shivakumar

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Thursday said the government will not allow anyone to take law into their own hands in the state in the name of fighting for the Kannada language. He was reacting to the large-scale vandalism in Bengaluru by the activists of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Narayana Gowda faction) targeting shops and business establishments which did not have Kannada signboards, advertisements and name plates. "We are not against the pro-Kannada activists but they should not take law into their hands. We are not ready to accept damage caused to the properties in Bengaluru," Shivakumar told reporters here. "We have to save Kannada and we respect those who fight for saving Kannada but that should not mean that the government will shut it's eyes to vandalism," he added. The Deputy CM said the government directions are clear that signboards, advertisements and name plates should have 60 per cent Kannada and there is a way to implement it such as issuing notic

Cong to finalise workers for key roles in state-run boards, corporations

Ruling Congress in Karnataka appears set to finalise the list of party legislators and workers to be appointed to key positions in various state-run boards and corporations, during the visit of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar to New Delhi from Monday. Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress President, said a list has already been sent to Congress high command for its approval. "We will definitely finalise it and come, we have already sent the list and proposal, as there were elections (in five states) and as there was Assembly (session) there was a delay. Both the Chief Minister and I are going, we will finalise and come," he told reporters here ahead of leaving for the national capital. Responding to a question on the Chief Minister reportedly getting an appointment to meet the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he merely said, "okay, we will meet." According to the Chief Minister's tour plan shared with the media, he will be travelling to Delhi

BJP takes note of 3 legislators attending Cong dinner, to seek explanation

Karnataka BJP President B Y Vijayendra on Thursday termed as a "serious matter" three of his party legislators attending a dinner hosted by the Congress after its Legislature Party meeting here and said he would seek explanation from them. State Congress President and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said the legislators did not participate in any meeting, but only attended the dinner on Wednesday night, on his invitation. The three are: MLAs -- S T Somashekar and Shivaram Hebbar -- and MLC H Vishwanath. The three legislators, who are former Ministers, attending the dinner raised eyebrows and added to speculations that they might be contemplating to join the ruling Congress ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha polls. They had made no secret of their disenchantment with the BJP and its internal affairs, ever since the party lost the May Assembly polls. The three were among the 17 Congress-JD(S) legislators who defected to BJP in 2019, which had led to the collapse of the H D Kumaraswamy-led

K'taka HC allows Dy CM to file memo seeking withdrawal of appeal in DA case

The High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday allowed Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar to withdraw his appeal against a single judge order over the issue of sanction to the CBI to prosecute him in assets case. The court allowed the deputy CM to file a memo seeking to withdraw the appeal filed by him challenging the earlier order. The single judge bench had refused to quash the sanction granted by the previous government to the CBI to prosecute him. Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi who appeared on video conference arguing for Shivakumar said that since the sanction that is under challenge has been withdrawn by the incumbent government, the issue has become infructuous and therefore he has instructions to withdraw it. "The practical issue is very simple. The Writ is filed challenging a sanction. Today, the sanction under challenge is withdrawn. Somebody will challenge, some will not (the sanction) but that is not of concern today. It (Appeal) is infructuous. It is liable to be allowed

Only to correct 'procedural lapse': K'taka HM on CBI probe against Dy CM

Defending the Cabinet's move to withdraw consent for a CBI probe against Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Friday said the government has not gone into the merits of the disproportionate assets case against him, but has only corrected the "procedural lapse" on the part of the previous BJP regime. Maintaining that the Congress government's decision is not politically motivated to "protect" Shivakumar, he said the opposition BJP and JD(S) were free to interpret whatever way they want. "(B S) Yediyurappa (as Chief Minister) had given oral instructions to the Chief Secretary to give sanction to the CBI to investigate the case. Wasn't it politically motivated then? What we have done is within the framework of law. The then Advocate General during the BJP government has himself said, also our Advocate General also has said the same," Parameshwara said, in response to opposition allegation that the decision was politically motivated Speaking to

Sanction for CBI probe against Shivakumar in DA case illegal: Siddaramaiah

Defending his cabinet's move to withdraw approval for the CBI probe against Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar in a disproportionate assets case, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said, the sanction given by the previous BJP government is illegal. The cabinet on Thursday deemed the previous BJP government's move to give consent to the CBI to investigate the DA case against Shivakumar as not being in accordance with the law and decided to withdraw the sanction. The then BJP government had given the sanction on September 25, 2019 following which the central investigating agency registered an FIR against Shivakumar on October 3, 2020. The CBI has claimed that Shivakumar amassed wealth to the tune of Rs 74.93 crore, disproportionate to known sources of his income from April 1, 2013 to April 30, 2018, when he was the Energy Minister in the then Siddaramaiah-led Congress government of 2013-2018. "What we have said is that the sanction given is illegal. For an inquiry on any governm

Won't be able to release water to TN, says Shivakumar after CWRC order

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has expressed the state's inability to release water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu as directed by the CWRC, saying it does not have adequate water in its Cauvery basin. His statement comes after the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) had on Monday recommended Karnataka to release 2,600 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu per day for 15 days from November 1. Shivakumar, who holds the water resource portfolio, said the inflow of water in the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam is insufficient to release water to the neighbouring state. "The inflow in KRS Dam is nil. We don't have the strength to release water," he told reporters here and added that 815 cusecs of water flows naturally from KRS and Kabini dams to Tamil Nadu. "There is only about 51 TMC water left in the Cauvery basin. Presently, the water stored is required to meet the drinking water requirement," Shivakumar said. Tamil Nadu had demanded 13,000 cusecs of water everyday.

No need to visit Karnataka to see Cong govt failures': BRS leader Rama Rao

Hitting back at Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar's invitation to witness implementation of poll promises in his state, BRS working president K T Rama Rao said there was no need to go there to see their "failures". In a message posted on his X, Rama Rao slammed Shivakumar saying he came to seek votes in Telangana for his party, leaving the people of Karnataka in a lurch. There is no need to go all the way to Karnataka to see your failures. The farmers who have been betrayed by you (Karnataka Government) are coming here and narrating the injustice done by you. The farmers are forewarning Telangana people about the danger posed by Congress, he said in the message. Responding to BRS allegations that the Congress government in Karnataka was unable to implement the promises it had made to people, Shivakumar had in a rally on Saturday asked Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and his son Rama Rao to visit the neighbouring state and see for themselves.
