8 suspected measles deaths, 503 cases logged in Maha; CM reviews situation

Maharashtra has reported 503 cases of measles so far this year and eight deaths suspected to be caused by the viral infection - all in Mumbai -- the health department said on Thursday as Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reviewed the situation and asked officials to give special attention to hospitalised patients. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in a separate bulletin, said the metropolis has reported eight suspected deaths due to the disease and 169 confirmed cases so far. As per the bulletin, 25 new patients of measles were admitted in the city, taking the number of hospitalised persons to 105. Mumbai on Wednesday reported 30 new COVID-19 cases, taking the overall tally to 11,54,732, while no fresh death linked to the infection was recorded in the metropolis, said the local civic body. A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) bulletin said the death toll remained unchanged at 19,742. On Tuesday, the city reported 27 COVID-19 cases and zero fatality. Significantly, Mumbai's case doubling rate has jumped over the 25,000-day mark (25,496), indicating a dramatic slowdown in spread of the respiratory illness. The count of recoveries reached 11,34,782 after 46 patients recuperated from the infection in the last 24 hours, leaving the metropolis with 208 active cases, said the bulletin. The growth rate of COVID-19 cases between November 9 and 15 was 0.003 per cent, it said. Mizoram stone quarry collapse: Toll rises to 10, PM announces ex gratia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each of those who lost their lives in the stone quarry collapse in Mizoram. At least 34 new cases of coronavirus were detected in Maharashtra's Thane district, raising the tally of infections to 7,47,080, a health official said on Friday. Fire breaks out at Noida factory, no casualty reported; rescue ops underway

A fire broke out at a factory in Noida on Monday morning, prompting rescue and relief measures at the site, police said. No casualty was reported in the fire that erupted in the factory located in Phase 2 industrial area around 9 am, a police official said. "Multiple water tenders were rushed at the spot along with firefighters and efforts are being made to douse the blaze," the official said. Fire in electrical meter room of high rise building in Thane; no casualty

A major fire broke out in the electrical meter room of a 20-storey residential building in Maharashtra's Thane city on Monday, a civic official said. No one was injured in the blaze which broke out at around 3.30 am in the building located in Balkum area, Thane Municipal Corporation's regional disaster management cell (RDMC) chief Avinash Sawant said. He said 24 out of the total 75 electrical meter boxes installed in the premises were destroyed in the fire. The power supply to the building was cut off immediately after the blaze erupted, he said. A team of local firemen and RDMC rushed to the spot and put out the fire in one-and-a-half hours, the official said. The cause of the fire is still not known, he added.

As many as 14 people were injured in a drive-by shooting, including three children, in the city's Garfield Park neighbourhood on Halloween night, Chicago police said.
