With 1,326 people testing positive for coronavirus infection in a day, India's tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 4,46,53,592, while the active cases declined to 17,912, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday. Mumbai on Saturday recorded 132 new cases of coronavirus which raised the tally of infections in the metropolis to 11,53,860, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The death toll remained unchanged at 19,738 with no new deaths being reported. The count of recoveries reached 11,33,561. For the first time after October 22, the daily new cases in the city surged over the 100-mark. During Diwali, daily cases had dropped to as low as 32. Mumbai currently has 561 active cases. As many as 146 patients recovered from the infection since previous evening. As many as 4,994 swab samples were tested during the same period. The recovery rate stands at 98.2 per cent, while the caseload doubling rate or period is 9,803 days.
Maharashtra on Saturday reported 319 new COVID-19 cases and two pandemic-related deaths, the state health department said. It took the tally of cases in the state to 81,31,458 and death toll to 1,48,385. On Friday, the state had reported 273 new cases and a single fatality. At least 18 people, including three children, were killed in different parts of Bangladesh as the cyclonic storm Sitrang lashed the country, leaving a trail of destruction, officials said on Tuesday. Sitrang completed its landfall and weakened to a tropical depression over Bangladesh in the early hours of Tuesday, The Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported. As many as 18 deaths caused due to the cyclonic storm were reported from different parts of Bangladesh since Monday night, it quoted officials as saying. Three members of a family died after a tree fell on their house in Comilla, while four people died at Bhola district after being crushed under trees and from drowning, the report said. Mumbai on Tuesday recorded 32 new cases of coronavirus, raising the overall tally to 11,53,502, while no fresh death linked to the infection was registered in the metropolis, the local civic body said. The death toll remained unchanged at 19,738. The city has reported less than 100 COVID-19 cases on the second consecutive day after 53 on Monday. The cumulative count of recoveries rose to 11,32,966 after 128 patients recuperated from the infection in the last 24 hours, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). A fire broke out in a 'chawl' or tenement in Ahmedabad city apparently due to crackers, causing explosions in five gas cylinders kept in different rooms on Tuesday, but no casualty was reported, officials said. The incident took place in the city's Sarangpur locality in the wee hours. The officials also said as many as 57 fire calls were received from across the city post-Diwali on Monday. "A chawl (old row tenement) with 11 rooms and located on the first floor caught fire that triggered blasts in five LPG cylinders kept in different rooms," said Divisional Fire Officer, Ahmedabad, Om Jadeja. The blaze, appeared to have been caused by firecrackers, started from three godowns storing plastic materials located on the ground floor of the building. "Residents of the building escaped unhurt. No one was injured in the blaze which erupted at the house located in Aundh area late Monday night, the official from the Pune Municipal Corporation's fire department said. He said 15 incidents of fire, suspected to have been caused due to firecrackers, were reported from various parts of Pune between 7 pm and 11 pm on Monday. In one such incident, a fire broke out in a four BHK (bedroom hall kitchen) flat located on the first floor of a 12-storey building in Aundh area, he said.
