'Let me stay, I'm India's daughter-in-law now,' pleads Seema Haider

I was Pakistan's daughter, but now I'm India's daughter-in-law, says Seema Haider as she fears deportation after the government suspended visa services for Pakistani nationals as part of a series of retaliatory steps following the Pahalgam terror attack. Haider made headlines in 2023 when she left Pakistan to marry her Indian lover, Sachin Meena. She was already married back home in Sindh province but had illegally entered India via Nepal along with her four children. In a video being shared on social media platforms, Seema says, "I do not want to go to Pakistan. I appeal to PM (Narendra) Modi and UP CM Yogi (Adityanath) to let me stay in India" Haider claims that she adopted Hinduism after marrying Meena. Despite the countrywide backlash, her lawyer is hopeful that she will be allowed to live in India, as, he claimed, she was no longer a Pakistani citizen. "Seema is no longer a Pakistani national. She married Sachin Meena, a resident of Greater Noida, and recently gave birth to t

Supreme Court blocks, for now, new deportations under 18th century law

The Supreme Court on Saturday blocked, for now, the deportations of any Venezuelans held in northern Texas under an 18th century wartime law. In a brief order, the court directed the Trump administration not to remove Venezuelans held in the Bluebonnet Detention Centre until further order of this court. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented. The high court acted in an emergency appeal from the American Civil Liberties Union contending that immigration authorities appeared to be moving to restart removals under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. Two federal judges refused to step in and the US 5th Circuit Court of Appeals has yet to act. The American Civil Liberties Union on Friday unsuccessfully asked two federal judges to order the Trump administration not to deport any Venezuelans held in northern Texas under an 18th century wartime law, contending that immigration authorities appeared to be moving to restart removals despite the US Supreme Court's restrictions on how

ACLU claims Trump admin restarting deportations under 18th century law

The American Civil Liberties Union on Friday unsuccessfully asked two federal judges to order the Trump administration not to deport any Venezuelans held in northern Texas under an 18th century wartime law, contending that immigration authorities appeared to be moving to restart removals despite the US Supreme Court's restrictions on how it can use the act. Later in the day, the ACLU filed emergency petitions with both the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the US Supreme Court itself to halt the deportations, even as one of the judges said it raised legitimate concerns but he could not issue an order. The group has already sued to block deportations under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 of two Venezuelans held in the Bluebonnet Detention Center and is asking a judge to issue an order barring removals of any immigrants in the region under the law. In an emergency filing early Friday, the ACLU warned that immigration authorities were accusing other Venezuelan men held there of being ..

Court calls Trump admin's defiance over mistakenly deported man 'shocking'

The Trump administration's claim that it can't do anything to free Kilmar Abrego Garcia from an El Salvador prison and return him to the US should be shocking, a federal appeals court said Thursday in a scathing ruling in favour of the Maryland man. A three-judge panel from the 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously refused to suspend a judge's decision to order sworn testimony by Trump administration officials to determine if they complied with her instruction to facilitate Abrego Garcia's return. The panel said Republican President Donald Trump's government is asserting a right to stash away residents of this country in foreign prisons without the semblance of due process that is the foundation of our constitutional order. Further, it claims in essence that because it has rid itself of custody that there is nothing that can be done. This should be shocking not only to judges, but to the intuitive sense of liberty that Americans far removed from courthouses still hold dear, th

US judge questions Trump officials' refusal to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia

A federal judge in Maryland questioned the Trump administration Tuesday about its continued refusal to retrieve Kilmar Abrego Garcia from an El Salvador prison, even after the Supreme Court ordered his return to the US. The hearing in a US District Court comes a day after White House advisers repeated the claim that they lack the authority to bring back the Salvadoran national from his native country. The president of El Salvador also said Monday that he would not return Abrego Garcia, likening it to smuggling a terrorist into the United States. Abrego Garcia's deportation has become a national flashpoint as President Donald Trump follows up on campaign promises of mass deportations, including to a notorious prison in El Salvador. Abrego Garcia's wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, said shortly before Tuesday's hearing that he was working hard to achieve the American dream for his family. That dream was shattered on March 12th when he was abducted and disappeared by the United States ...

Visa cancellations leave foreign students in US fearing deportation

At first, the bar association for immigration attorneys began receiving inquiries from a couple students a day. These were foreigners studying in the US, and they'd discovered in early April their legal status had been terminated with little notice. To their knowledge, none of the students had committed a deportable offense. In recent days, the calls have begun flooding in. Hundreds of students have been calling to say they have lost legal status, seeking advice on what to do next. We thought it was going to be something that was unusual, said Matthew Maiona, a Boston-based immigration attorney who is getting about six calls a day from panicked international students. But it seems now like it's coming pretty fast and furious. The speed and scope of the federal government's efforts to terminate the legal status of international students have stunned colleges across the country. Few corners of higher education have been untouched, as schools ranging from prestigious private ...

US federal court denies relief to Cornell univ student facing deportation

A Cornell University student facing deportation was denied relief on Thursday by a federal judge hearing his legal challenge against the Donald Trump administration. Judge Elizabeth Coombe rejected requests from Momodou Taal to temporarily halt his removal proceedings and the enforcement of two executive orders from President Donald Trump. The 31-year-old citizen of the United Kingdom and Gambia had his student visa revoked this month and was asked to surrender to Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities for removal proceedings. Taal's case comes as the Trump administration attempts to remove non-citizens from the country for participating in campus protests that the government deems antisemitic and sympathetic to the militant Palestinian group Hamas. Students say the government is targeting them for advocating for Palestinian rights. Taal and two co-plaintiffs filed a lawsuit March 15 seeking to block enforcement of executive orders he believed could lead to his deportatio

Court rejects Trump admin's bid to use wartime law for deportations

A federal appeals court in the US on Wednesday refused to lift an order barring the Donald Trump administration from deporting Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador under an 18th century wartime law. A split three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the district of Columbia Circuit upheld a March 15 order temporarily prohibiting deportations under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. Invoking the law for the first time since World War II, President Donald Trump's administration deported hundreds of people under a presidential proclamation calling the Tren de Aragua gang an invading force. The Justice Department appealed after US district judge James Boasberg blocked more deportations and ordered planeloads of Venezuelan immigrants to return to the US. That did not happen. Attorneys from the American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit on behalf of five Venezuelan non-citizens who were being held in Texas. The case has become a flashpoint amid escalating tension between the Whit

Columbia student protester sues Trump admin to stop deportation order

Another Columbia University student claimed on Monday that the Donald Trump administration has targeted her for deportation over her pro-Palestinian views, accusing immigration officials in a lawsuit of employing the same tactics used on Mahmoud Khalil and other college activists. Yunseo Chung, a 21-year-old lawful permanent resident, said the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) moved to deport her after she was arrested on March 5 while protesting the Ivy League school's disciplinary actions against student protesters. News reports at the time identified her as being among a group of protesters arrested after a sit-in at a library on the adjacent Barnard College campus. Within days of her arrest, Chung said in the lawsuit, ICE officials signed an administrative arrest warrant and went to her parents' residence seeking to detain her. On March 10, Chung said, a federal law enforcement official told her lawyer that her lawful permanent resident status was being "revoked". T

US govt debates invoking state secrets privilege around deportation flights

Top leaders of President Donald Trump's administration are debating whether to invoke a state secrets privilege in response to a judge's questions about deportation flights carrying Venezuelan immigrants to El Salvador, a Justice Department official informed the judge on Friday ahead of a hearing. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a court filing that there are ongoing Cabinet-level discussions about Chief Judge James Boasberg's demand for more information. The district judge ordered the Trump administration to either provide more details about the flights or assert a claim that disclosing the information would harm state secrets. The Republican administration has largely resisted the judge's request, calling it an unnecessary judicial fishing expedition. Boasberg dismissed its response as woefully insufficient, increasing the possibility that he may hold administration officials in contempt of court. Government lawyers filed Blanche's sworn statement hours before the jud

US deportees run from one embassy to another in Panama to seek asylum

Migrants from Afghanistan, Russia, Iran and China deported from the United States and dropped into limbo in Panama hopped door-to-door at embassies and consulates this week in a desperate attempt to seek asylum in any country that would accept them. The focus of international humanitarian concern just weeks before, the deportees now say they're increasingly worried that with little legal and humanitarian assistance and no clear pathway forward offered by authorities, they may be forgotten. After this, we don't know what we'll do, said 29-year-old Hayatullah Omagh, who fled Afghanistan in 2022 after the Taliban takeover. In February, the United States deported nearly 300 people from mostly Asian nations to Panama. The Central American ally was supposed to be a stopover for migrants from countries that were more challenging for the U.S. to deport to as the Trump administration tried to accelerate deportations. Some agreed to voluntarily return to their countries from Panama, but other
