Meghalaya: Operations continue to rescue miners

The operation continued in Meghalaya to rescue the miners who have been trapped in a mine at Ksan near Lyteiñ River in East Jaintia Hills.Fire service operated their pumps for 7 hours and 6.30 hours respectively from shaft No. 2 and 3. One pump was started at 10:00 am and another pump was started at 10.30 am respectively.The water from both the shafts reduced by 4 feet but due to heavy seepage from other shafts, the water level increased and only 2 feet water has been reduced. A total 12,15,000 litres water has so far been pumped out from both the shafts.The Indian Navy divers and the NDRF jointly assisted the Coal India in their works. The miners have been stuck in the mine since December 13 last year.

5.8 magnitude quake jolts Iran-Iraq border

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on Richter scale struck the Iran-Iraq border region on Sunday.The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicentre of the quake was located around 41kilometers south-west of Sarpol-e Zahab in Iran around 13:42 pm (UTC).According to reports, tremors had a depth of 8.9 km.However, no casualties or damage to property has been reported so far.Further details are awaited.

Germany raises avalanche alert after female skier dies

Heavy snowfall in southern Germany and the death of a skier prompted authorities Sunday to raise the avalanche alert warning in the Bavarian Alps to the second-highest level. The Bavarian avalanche warning service said it had boosted the alert level to four on a scale of five, warning of a "great danger of avalanches in the Bavarian Alps". A 20-year-old woman died Saturday after she was buried by an avalanche on the Teisenberg mountain range in Upper Bavaria, near the Austrian border. Five other people in her ski group were unharmed. Meteorologists said they expected the region, already hit by days of heavy snow, to see a further 10 to 40 centimetres (four to 16 inches) of the white stuff by Monday. SpiceJet Boeing 737 MAX plane suffers mid-air engine problem

SpiceJet's Boeing 737 MAX plane from Hong Kong suffered a mid-air engine problem Sunday, forcing the aircraft to make emergency landing in Varanasi, according to an official. The plane was flying to Delhi from Hong Kong. The incident comes close on the heels of another incident where a Pratt &Whitney engine of an IndiGo A320 neo plane stopped working mid-air when the aircraft was on its way to Kolkata from Chennai. A senior official of the Director General of Civil Aviation said the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft faced an engine issue and made an emergency landing. When contacted, a SpiceJet spokesperson said the plane landed safely in Varanasi and passengers were deplaned normally. Flight SG-32 was diverted to Varanasi after the pilots noticed low fuel supply in no. 1 engine, he said. Death toll mounts to 40 in Afghanistan mine collapse

The death toll in the gold mine collapse here on Sunday rose to 40, while 10 miners were reportedly injured.CNN quoted Afghan parliament member Fawzia Koofi saying in a statement, "Ten other miners were injured in the incident which happened as they searched for gold in the Kohestan district of Badakhshan province."According to Tolo News, miners were still working at the accident site when the gold mine collapsed around 11 am in the north-eastern Badakhshan province of Afghanistan.The spokesman for Badakhshan governor, Nek Mohammad Nazari said 15 miners, who were injured in the accident, were rushed to a hospital.Meanwhile, the officials did not mention anything regarding the number of miners still trapped inside the gold mine.The death toll in the mine collapse incident is expected to rise.

Day 25 of Meghalaya mine mishap: Rescue ops hit fresh roadblock

Rescue operations for the 15 miners trapped in a flooded illegal coal mine in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district for the past 24 days hit a roadblock Sunday as the two high-powered pumps engaged in dewatering encountered technical glitches, officials said. The high-powered pumps of Kirloskar Brothers Ltd were recently pressed into action to dewater the main shaft, where the miners are trapped. Another submersible pump from Coal India Ltd (CIL) also faced a snag, affecting dewatering operations in the nearby abandoned mines. "Two pumps from Kirloskar Brothers and the submersible pump from Coal India encountered glitches and the dewatering process in the main shaft was affected," R Susngi, spokesperson of the operation, told PTI. The two high-powered pumps are undergoing repair work, he said, adding that the CIL pump was replaced with a new one. Report: Moderate quake rattles western Iran, no casualties

Iran's semi-official Fars news agency says a 5.9-magnitude earthquake has jolted the country's western province of Kermanshah, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Fars said Sunday's temblor rocked the Kurdish town of Gilan-e-Gharb, which was one of the Kurdish areas that suffered extensive damage from a 7.2-magnitude earthquake in November that killed 600 people in western Iran. Iran sits on major fault lines and is prone to near-daily earthquakes. In 2003, a 6.6-magnitude quake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people.

Dubai-bound Air Express flight returns to Mumbai due to glitch

A Dubai-bound Air Express flight from the city carrying over 180 persons on board landed back here under emergency conditions Sunday after being airborne for over an hour due to a "hydraulic" failure, a source said. An Air India spokesperson said there was a "technical glitch", and after it was rectified, the plane resumed the journey around 8 pm, five hours after it returned to the Mumbai airport. All passengers were safe. "Full emergency was declared at 14.28 am for Air India Express flight AI 247 operating on the Mumbai-Dubai route following the pilot seeking a diversion back to the city due to hydraulic failure," said the source. 10 Sabarimala pilgrims from Telangana killed in road accident in Tamil Nadu

Ten Sabarimala pilgrims from Telangana died in a road accident near Thirumayam town in Pudukottai district of central Tamil Nadu Sunday after their vehicle collided head-on with a lorry, police said. Five others have sustained grievous injuries, a senior police officer told PTI, adding that some of the deceased were in their early twenties or early thirties. "The incident happened at around 3 pm when the tempo in which the Sabarimala pilgrims were travelling from Karaikudi to Pudukottai collided with a lorry that was coming from the opposite direction," the officer said. The lorry occupied the right-side of the divider-less, narrow road leading to the collision, he said, adding that an investigation is on. The bodies have been sent for autopsy. The injured have been admitted at the Pudukottai government hospital.

Fire in Sherbagh area of Anantnag, 6 buildings damaged

A fire broke out in a building housing a clinic at Sherbagh area of Anantnag district of south Kashmir this morning damaging Six commercial structures, officials said. Fire and Emergency Service officials said the blaze spread to the nearby structures which resulted in partial damage to six of them. Fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames and control the fire from spreading further, the officials said. They said the cause of the fire is being ascertained. Meanwhile, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti has demanded necessary help be provided to the affected. Lose weight or face the axe: PIA tells 'obese' cabin crew

Pakistan's flag carrier PIA has asked some of its cabin crew with "excess weight" to shed some kilos within six months or risk being grounded, in a bid to make them "slim, smart and fit", a media report said. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) also issued a suggested weight chart for differing heights and body types, The Express Tribune reported. Those already "on weight check" need to report monthly to a "grooming cell" to receive clearance to fly, it said. The carrier's general manager of flight services Aamir Bashir issued an order on the first day of 2019, saying official excess weight limits would be cut back by five pounds (2.26 kgs) a month, the report said. In a memo distributed to approximately 1,800 cabin crew, PIA said they must trim down or face being grounded, the report said. The airline said it is cracking down on what it terms the "excess weight" of some of its cabin crew. Currently, flight attendants, who are 30 pounds (13.6 kgs) over are still eligible for flight .

6 dead, 50 injured as bus overturns in Thailand

Around six people, including an infant, lost their lives while about 50 others were injured when a bus overturned in Khlong Luang on Sunday.The mishap took place at 3:20 am (local time) on the Phahon Yothin highway, the Bangkok Post reported while quoting Police Captain Vacharapong Thienpratham.The bus, belonging to the Prayad Tour Company, left from the Phanom Phrai district in Roi-et province on Saturday evening. Passengers have stated that the bus overturned when the driver pulled the brakes to avoid colliding with the vehicle in front while it was raining heavily.Four women, one man and a three to five-month-old baby girl lost their lives due to the accident, while the 50 injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals including the Thammasat Chalerm Phra Kiat, Bang Pakok Rangsit, Pathumvech, Pattara-Thonburi, Paolo Rangsit amongst others.Police are still looking for the bus driver, who is believed to be amongst the injured as investigations pertaining to the tragedy are underway.
