Death toll crosses 280 in Indonesia Tsunami

Indonesia tsunami: West Bengal CM condoles deaths

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed grief over the loss of lives caused by a volcano-triggered tsunami in Indonesia. The tsunami has claimed 281 lives, besides injuring over 1,000 people. "Deeply saddened by the loss of many lives by the devastating tsunami in Indonesia. My condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. "In this difficult time our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Indonesia," Banerjee tweeted on Sunday. Hundreds of buildings were destroyed by the wave, which slammed into the coast of southern Sumatra and the western tip of Java about 9:30 pm (1430 GMT) on Saturday after a volcano known as the "child" of Krakatoa erupted.

25 people injured after mini-van collides with tractor in Muzaffarnagar

At least 25 people, most of them labourers, were injured when a mini-van collided with a tractor-trolley here, police said Monday. The accident took place on the Nawla road in Muzaffarnagar district Sunday evening. The injured are undergoing treatment at a hospital here, police said. In another incident, a man was killed and another seriously injured after their motorcycle fell into a drain here. Sanjay (41) died on the spot and Prashant was admitted to a hospital.

1 killed, 34 ITBP personnel injured as bus falls into gorge

One person was killed and 34 Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel were injured Monday when a bus carrying them skidded off the road and fell into a gorge along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, police said. The vehicle was part of a Jammu-bound convoy and the accident occurred near Khuni Nallah in Ramban district around 8.45 am, a police officer said. Trees prevented the bus from falling further down in the gorge, the officer said. Around 35 people were travelling in the bus A team of rescue personnel comprising Army, police and local volunteers are at the spot. While one person died, 34 persons were rescued from the wreckage of the vehicle and rushed to the district hospital in Ramban, the officer said.

6.4-magnitude earthquake hits off coast of Tonga: USGS

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit in waters off the Pacific island nation of Tonga on Monday, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued. The quake struck at a moderate depth of 100 kilometres (62 miles) with the epicentre some 85 kilometres north of the Tongan capital Nuku'alofa. There were no immediate reports of damage. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat. Baea Filimoehala from the reception at the Emerald Hotel in Nuku'alofa told AFP there was no damage in the capital, describing the quake as a "small one".

Birmingham Airport in England says it has resolved a problem with its air traffic control system that prevented flights from taking off or landing for about two hours. There was no indication the technical problem in Birmingham on Sunday was related to the drone sightings that caused major problems at London's Gatwick Airport in recent days. The grounded flights nevertheless caused their share of frustration and worry two days before Christmas. Passengers who had already boarded or reached departure gates were kept in a holding pattern, while some arriving flights were diverted to other airports in England. Yemen's UN cease-fire monitors arrive in port of Hodeida

A UN team led by a Dutch officer arrived Sunday at Hodeida to monitor a cease-fire that went into force in the Red Sea port city where Yemen's civil war rivals been fighting for months, according to security officials and witnesses. The team, led by Major General Patrick Cammaert, had earlier flown into Sanaa, Yemen's capital, from Aden, the home-in-exile of Yemen's internationally recognised government. 2 police personnel killed in Assam road accident

Two police personnel were killed in a road accident in Baksa district of Assam on Sunday when their vehicle collided head-on with a tractor. Baksa Superintendent of Police Binoy Kalita said Sub-Inspector, Denagra Brahma and driver-constable, Bijon Uzir, of Gobardhana Police Station died on the spot, while four civilians were also injured in the accident. Baksa Deputy Superintendent of Police, Siddhi Kr Baruah, said the SI had gone out at about 5 am taking his driver with the four persons, including a source, after getting information of a theft truck. 4.0 magnitude earthquake jolts Arunachal Pradesh

An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 on the Richter scale hit the north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday.The earthquake jolted the state at 04:51 pm Indian Standard Time (IST).According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the epicentre of the quake was located at a latitude of 27.2 degree north and longitude of 95.8 degrees east and occurred at a depth of 10 km.Arunachal Pradesh's Changlang district was the epicentre of the earthquake. A dozen godowns gutted in fire at Bhiwandi

A devastating fire Sunday destroyed at least a dozen godowns in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi near here in Maharashtra, but there was no casualty, fire brigade officials said. Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation Chief Fire Officer Datta Salvi said there was no loss of life or casualty in the blaze. The fire broke out at about 2 pm in Krishna Complex at Gundavali that housed several godowns and it was brought under control at around 6 pm, he said. The blaze destroyed at least a dozen godowns, where broom and other materials were kept, located in the complex, the official said. The cause of the fire was under probe, he added.

Man held in Meghalaya mine mishap admits he's the owner: Police

The man, who was arrested in connection with the mine mishap in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district a fortnight ago, has admitted that he was the owner of the 370-foot-deep illegal quarry, police said Sunday. Fifteen miners were trapped in the "rat-hole" mine on December 13 after water from nearby Lytein river gushed into it. All efforts to trace the labourers have turned futile as the water level in the mine showed no signs of receding in the past 11 days. Krip Chullet, who was arrested on December 14, admitted during interrogation that the mine in Lumthari village of Khliehriat area -- around 80 km from Shillong -- belonged to him, Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtynger told PTI.
