17 shacks gutted in city slum, no casualty

A fire gutted 17 shacks in Duttabad slum in the north-eastern parts of the city on Sunday. Fire brigade sources said four fire tenders extinguished the flames in over an hour, at around 2:20 pm, and there was no report of any casualty. The fire in Duttabad, located next to Salt Lake satellite township and off E M Bypass, was suspected to have been caused by an LPG cylinder leak. The exact reason could be known after forensic test of burnt objects, the sources said. The fire did not cause disruption to vehicular movement on a Sunday with police cordoning off the stretch.

Over 45,000 people hit by flash floods in northern Sri Lanka

Over 45,000 people from nearly 14,000 families have been hit by flash floods triggered by heavy rains in Sri Lanka's northern province. No deaths or disappearances have been reported so far, disaster management officials said on Sunday. The five affected districts are Mullaithivu, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Vavuniya and Jaffna. Some areas in the affected districts received more than 350 mm of rainfall last night, causing flash floods. The officials said that over 8,500 people have been sheltered in 52 welfare camps. The search and rescue teams have been mobilised together with boats. The Navy and the Army personnel have also been engaged in the relief and rescue missions. President Maithripala Sirisena has directed officials to provide immediate relief to the affected people.

Bodies of Uttarakhand landslide victims flown to north Kashmir

The bodies of seven labourers who died in a landslide in Uttarakhand were flown Sunday by a special chopper from here to their native place in north Kashmir's Baramulla district for the last rites, officials said. The bodies reached Jammu from Uttarakhand in the morning and were subsequently flown to their home town Uri near the Line of Control (LoC) in Baramulla district by a special chopper, the officials said. The seven labourers were killed and three others injured Friday in a landslide near the construction site of Char Dham all-weather road project in Rudarprayag district of Uttarakhand. All the 10 labourers originally hailed from Uri in north Kashmir. Under-construction structure collapses in Mumbai; 3 killed

At least three people were killed and six others injured when a two-storey under-construction structure in a chawl collapsed Sunday morning, police said. The incident took place at around 9.15 am at Motilal Nagar in Goregaon (West) when the slab of the two-floor building gave way during construction, an official said. The structure was part of a chawl (tenement) of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada), he said. Fire brigade and police personnel rushed to the spot after getting information about the collapse and started a rescue operation, he said.
