Expressing concern that Karnataka has become drought prone for successive years, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said Wednesday an expert committee would be set up to study about it and find ways to mitigate the situation. Intervening during the reply to a discussion on drought in the assembly in session here, he said "it is because of our own deeds we are facing such situation today....we have been exploiting the nature to such an extent." A 20-year-old food-delivery boy saved 10 lives during the massive fire at a Mumbai hospital that killed eight people on Monday. Sidhu Humanabade was passing by when he saw smoke billowing out from the upper floors of the ESIC Kamgar Hospital in Andheri. He left his bike and asked the firemen if he could join them in the rescue operation. After a nod from officials, Humanabade reached the fourth floor of the building with the help of fire brigade's ladder and rescued some stranded patients and visitors. Braving the dense smoke that engulfed the area, Sidhu, who works for online food aggregator Swiggy, managed to bring out 10 people to safety in two hours. However, he himself choked on the smoke and is currently admitted at the nearby Seven Hills Hospital. Commissioner of the civic body M Dana Kishore, who inspected some areas, identified the problem caused by the private hospital and imposed the fine, said a press release from the Municipal Corporation. The letting out of the waste on to the road was causing inconvenience to the public and ambulance service, the release said.

The operation to rescue more than a dozen labourers, who got trapped in a Meghalaya mine last week, continued for the seventh day on Wednesday. The rescue efforts has so far failed to extricate any person as the water level in the flooded mine in East Jaintia Hills district has not receded, a senior official said. Superintendent of Police (SP) Sylvester Nongtynger told PTI that the family of a person, Assh Bahadur Limbu of Assam's Karbi Anglong district, have said that he was among those inside. If the claim is true, then the total number of people trapped inside the mine now stands at 15, the officer said. A 34-year-old truck driver, fleeing after allegedly hitting three persons and killing one of them, died after his vehicle overturned a few metres away from the accident spot in northwest Delhi's Mukundpur on Wednesday, police said. The deceased driver has been identified as Rajan while the 17-year-old girl who was killed in the incident has been identified as Shikha, they said. On getting information about an accident in Mukundpur at 2.05 pm, a police team rushed to the spot, police said. Two class XII students, Shikha and Kanchan were walking home after attending school when they were hit by a truck which was being reversed by the driver.
