Karol Bagh fire case: NHRC sends notices to Delhi govt, police commissioner

The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the Delhi government and the city police chief over the death of four persons in a fire at an illegal workshop in Karol Bagh here. The commission has observed that the accident could have been averted, if the authorities had executed their designated duties sincerely. The NHRC has taken suo moto cognisance of media reports that an illegal factory caught fire in a congested area of Karol Bagh, in which four workers were charred to death while another is battling for his life, the rights panel said in a statement Thursday. The commission has issued notices to the Delhi chief secretary and the commissioner of police, seeking detailed reports within four weeks. "The commission would like to know about the action taken against the negligent public servants and steps taken to ensure that these kinds of tragic incidents do not recur," it said. Make disaster expenses public, MNF leader asks Cong govt

A senior leader of the opposition Mizo National front (MNF) today demanded that the Congress government in the state provide details of expenses to help the people affected by the natural disaster last year. At least 13 people were killed, 172 domestic animals perished and over 3,000 houses destroyed in the landslides and flood between May and July 2017, Lalhming Liana, a former Rajya Sabha member, said. Liana also accused Chief Minister Lalthanhawla of ignoring disaster affected people of his own state while sending Rs 2 crore for the flood-hit population of Kerala. "The Centre had released Rs 35.97 crore on March eight, 2018 for the disaster affected people of Mizoram. But how the fund was utilised was never known," Liana, also chairman of MNF's internal vigilance committee, said. He demanded that the government make public the details of how it has utilised the central fund. The state government disbursed Rs 2 crore as relief for the Kerala flood victims and 34 ruling .

Rahul expresses sympathy with victims of MP bus accident

Congress President Rahul Gandhi Thursday expressed sympathy with the kin of those killed and injured in a bus accident in Madhya Pradesh. Gandhi took to Twitter to express his feelings and said he was pained to hear about the incident in Satna district. "Pained on hearing the news of the bus mishap in Madhya Pradesh. I pray to God for early relief to the injured. My deep sympathies with the parents of the children," he tweeted in Hindi. 5 killed, 18 injured as car rams into students in China

A speeding car ploughed into several students crossing a road in front a primary school in China's northeast Liaoning province, killing at least five of them and injuring 18 others, nearly two months after a similar incident claimed 11 lives. The injured students of No 2 primary school in Jianchang county, Huludao city have been taken to hospitals, state-run China Daily reported. The number of casualties was yet to be determined though initial reports said that five people have been killed. The driver has been arrested, the report said. The daily's website carried pictures of several people lying on the road and police detaining the driver. Some videos circulating on social media showed a car ramming into the wrong side of the road and crashing into a group of school students. New method to remove toxic mercury from water

Scientists have developed a method to efficiently clean water contaminated with toxic mercury -- one of the major causes of environmental damage and health problems worldwide. Mercury spreads very easily through nature, and can enter the food chain. Freshwater fish, for example, often contain high levels of mercury. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mercury is one the most harmful substances for human health. It can influence the nervous system, the development of the brain, and more. It is particularly harmful for children and can also be transmitted from a mother to a child during pregnancy. "Our new method makes it possible to reduce the mercury content in a liquid by more than 99 per cent. Six school children, driver killed in van-bus collision in MP

Six school children and a driver were killed while 11 others were injured when a bus collided with a school van at Birsinghpur in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, a police official said. Five children were among those injured and two of them are in a critical condition, police said. Police had earlier claimed that eight persons, including seven school children, were killed in the accident. "Six children- four boys and two girls- aged between 10 and 15-years, travelling in the school van and its driver were killed on the spot when they were on their way to school," Satna district Superintendent of Police (SP) Santosh Singh Gaur told PTI. The accident took place around 8.30 am, he said adding the school van was completely damaged in the collision. Realty major DLF Thursday said it has been awarded by the British Safety Council for achieving highest standard in health and safety risk management in 11 of its commercial projects. The 'Sword of Honour' award recognises companies that have implemented global best practices in the management of health and safety risk. DLF's MD (Rental Business) Sriram Khattar said these awards cover 80 per cent of the company's rental portfolio. The company has more than 30 million sq ft of rent yielding commercial assets with annual rental income of over Rs 3,000 crore. The 11 projects include DLF Office Complexes (17 buildings) and Cyber Hub at Gurugram. Cyclone Gaja: TN govt seeks about Rs 15,000 cr aid from Centre

The Tamil Nadu government Thursday sought about Rs 15,000 crore as central assistance towards relief and rehabilitation activities in Cyclone Gaja affected districts in the state. Chief Minister K Palaniswami met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi with a plea for central assistance for various sectors in the affected districts, the state government said here. "I have submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister detailing the extent of the damage caused by the cyclone," Palaniswami told reporters in Delhi, adding the state has sought about Rs 15,000 crore. He said he had also urged Modi to depute a central team to assess the damage, besides seeking an immediate release of nearly Rs 1500 crore towards "temporary renovation" activities. Drought-fuelled dust storm blankets Sydney

A large dust storm swirled over eastern Australia on Thursday, driven over the coast by a weather front barrelling across the drought-stricken interior. Authorities warned residents of Sydney and other parts of New South Wales state who had respiratory or cardiovascular conditions to limit their time outdoors until the dust settled. Adam Morgan of the Bureau of Meteorology said a low pressure system over South Australia and Victoria states had pushed strong winds across areas of western New South Wales that have experienced one of the worst drought seasons in years. 2 charred to death in tanker-trailer collision near Howrah

Two vehicles, one of which was carrying highly inflammable substances, collided on Kona Expressway near here early Thursday morning killing the two drivers besides injuring a constable, police said. A trailer and a gas-laden tanker, which were involved in the accident, went up in flames instantly. Train services and vehicular traffic were disrupted following the accident. The accident took place on the expressway in Howrah district at around 4 am when the trailer lost control and hit the tanker, police said. Within seconds, both the vehicles caught fire and the two drivers were charred to death, the police said. As many as seven fire tenders rushed to the spot and doused the flames, fire brigade said.
