Mild earthquake hits Kutch in Gujarat
An earthquake measuring 3.1 on Richter scale jolted Gujarat's Kutch district on Saturday afternoon, an official said. No casualty or damage to property was reported in the mild-intensity quake. "An earthquake of 3.1 intensity was felt at 12.57 pm with its epicentre at 14 km north north-west of Bhachau in the district," an official at the Gandhinagar-based Institute of Seismological Research said. A devastating earthquake had shook the Kutch district in January 2001, killing thousands of people and destroying lakhs of homes.

Fire in Russia shopping mall prompts mass evacuation
Nearly 800 people have been evacuated after a massive fire broke out in the Lenta supermarket in St Petersburg on Saturday morning.Quoting sources, Sputnik reported the fire erupted in the supermarket at 8.30 am local time (GMT +3) due to an electrical malfunction and quickly swept through the entire building and the roof, threatening the lives of many people, including the staff as well as the customers. Emergency services have also confirmed that the roof of the shopping mall had collapsed on an area of 3,800 sq. meters.Meanwhile, no casualties have been reported till now. Five killed in road accident in Munger
Five persons were killed and another was injured when their motorcycles coming from opposite directions collided in Munger district, the police said. Two bikes carrying three persons each collided killing four of them on the spot while another died on way to the hospital Friday near Rampur Maujma bridge under Sangrampur police station. While three persons riding a bike were going to a fair organised at Balia village on the occasion of Kali puja, the other three riding a two-wheeler were returning from the fair, the police said. The injured person, admitted to the Sangrampur primary health centre, is out of danger.

70 shanties gutted in Rohini slum fire
About 70 shanties were gutted after a fire broke out at a slum in Rohini, the Delhi Fire Service said Saturday. The incident took place on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, they said. No casualty has been reported. A call about the fire was received at 12.18 am and 14 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The fire was brought under control by 4.40 am, a senior Delhi Fire Service officer said. About 70 shanties were gutted in the fire that broke out at Rohini Sector 26, he said. The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained, officials added.
Fire at paper godown in Kolkata
A major fire broke out in a paper godown in Ultadanga area of northern part of the metropolis on Saturday, fire brigade officials said. Nobody was injured. Ten fire tenders have been pressed into service to douse the flame. "We received the information about the fire at around 10 am" they said.

Wildfire kills five in Northern California
A fast-moving wildfire across Northern California's Butte County burned a hospital, hundreds of homes and left five dead on Friday.Five people were found dead in Paradise after their bodies were recovered from vehicles that were overcome by the flames. Illegal mining kills 3 in Jharkhand
Three persons were killed Friday when a huge chunk of coal caved in on them during illegal mining in the Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) Rajapur open cast mines, police said. The incident happened in the morning at a place under Jharia police station, 22 km from district headquarters Dhanbad. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Sindri range, P K Kesri said the three deceased were identified as Nageswar Mahto (40), Pankaj Kumar (20) and Chanda (14). The incident occurred when several villagers were digging coal in the closed open cast mines when all of a sudden a large chunk of coal fell on them. IndiGo flight makes emergency landing, passengers safe
A Guwahati-bound IndiGo aircraft with 76 passengers on board made an emergency landing within a few minutes of take-off after smoke was detected from the plane's cargo hold, an AAI official said. "The aircraft made a safe landing at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport here around 8.30 pm, 15 minutes after take-off," the Airports Authority of India (AAI) official said. The pilot had informed the air traffic control (ATC) soon after the smoke alarm went off in the cockpit, the official said.
