Man killed while crossing tracks in Ghaziabad

One person was killed and three others were injured when they were hit by a train while crossing a closed level crossing in Ghaziabad Tuesday, a railway official said. The incident happened at 8 am when a group of four were crossing the tracks even as the level crossing was closed for traffic. The four were hit by the Dankor-Shakur Basti passenger train at gate no 153A. "The incident happened between Ghaziabad and Chipyana. The gate was closed and they were trying to cross from beneath it. All the injured are being treated at Civil Hospital Ghaziabad," Northern Railway spokesperson Deepak Kumar said. Between September 2017 and August 2018, there have been five accidents at manned level crossings which have led to six deaths. There were eight accidents at unmanned level crossings during the same period.

3 hurt in road accident succumb to injuries

All the three persons, including two women, who had received serious injuries in a road accident in this district of Uttar Pradesh on October 12, died Monday while undergoing treatment, police said. The accident had occurred on the Musafirkhana-Gauriganj road, near Pindara village under the Musafirkhana police station, when the bike driven by Babulal Yadav was hit by a truck. The two pillion riders -- Yadav's wife Kamlesh and sister-in-law Kesh Kumari -- were also injured in the accident and admitted to a private hospital at Jagdishpur, but succumbed to their injuries Monday. The Station House Officer (SHO), Musafirkhana had taken the truck into police custody, but the driver had fled, the police said. Musafirkhana police has lodged an FIR against the driver.

Swept away from herd in Mahanadi, five elephants swim to safety: officials

Five elephants, including two calves, which were swept away from their herd by heavy currents in Mahandi river while crossing it early Monday near Mundali, swam to safety later in the day, forest officials said. The five pachyderms swam to safety near Naraj Barrage here on the outskirts of the city in the afternoon, they said. After over five hours of struggle, the animals found their way into the jungle by the evening, said the forest officials overseeing their rescue operation throughout the day. The officials said, "At least five elephants, including two calves, of a herd of around 20 were trapped in heavy currents while crossing the river near Athgarh." "They were trapped by a sudden release of flood waters at the Mundali Barrage. Five of them were swept away from the herd," they said. Cyclone Titli: Death toll climbs to 27, relief-restoration work stepped up

With the recovery of three more bodies on Monday, the death toll in cyclone Titli and the subsequent flood in Odisha rose to 27, even as relief and restoration activities have been stepped up, officials said. The three bodies were found in the worst hit Raigada block of Gajapati district, the officials said. "In the landslide incident in Raigada block, 18 people have died. Postmortem of bodies have been conducted," said chief secretary A P Padhi, who visited worst-hit Gajapati district to review the situation. On his return from Gajapati, Padhi attended a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik where it was decided to start distribution of 50 kg of rice, two-and-half litre of kerosene oil and Rs 1,000 cash to each affected family in the district. Claiming that the situation has improved in many parts of the state, including in Gajapati and Ganjam districts, Padhi said the food distribution work will begin from Tuesday. Female flight attendant falls from AI plane, seriously injured

A 53-year-old female flight attendant fell off a stationary Air India plane while closing its door at the Mumbai airport Monday, suffering serious injuries, airline and hospital authorities said. The wide-body Boeing 777 aircraft was preparing to depart for New Delhi when Harsha Lobo fell on the tarmac from a height of 20 feet, apparently through a gap between the rear door and the step ladder, a senior Air India official said. The incident occurred at around 6 am, the official said. Lobo suffered multiple fractures in her legs and was rushed to the Nanavati Hospital where she is being treated, the airline said. Farmers meet IMD officials to protest 'wrong' rain forecast

A group of farmers from Beed in central Maharashtra, which has witnessed scanty rains this monsoon, met officials of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) here Monday and said its "inaccurate" rain forecast misled them. The farmers, under the banner of Shetkari Sangharsh Samiti, had earlier written two letters to the IMD, alleging that because of the Met department's inaccurate forecast they were facing losses. Gangabhishan Thavre, one of the farmers, said the IMD had forecast 104 per cent of the average rainfall this year, but the Marathwada region (of which Beed district is a part) is facing a drought now. "We trusted the forecast and on its basis the sowing was carried out, but due to deficient rainfall, most farmers are facing losses," hesaid. A fire broke out at a chemical godown at Tangra in the eastern part of the city on Monday, Fire Brigade officials said. There was no report of any casualty in the fire, they said. Ten fire tenders put off the flames, which broke out at around 5:30 pm, after three hours of fire fighting, the officials said. 26 drown in boat accident in northwest Mali

Twenty-six people drowned when two boats overturned in a swollen river in northwestern Mali, officials and local residents said. "Two canoes carrying 48 people capsized on Saturday at Arnassey in Bourem Inaly district, in the Timbuktu region," Transport Minister Soumana Mory Coulibaly said in a statement released overnight Sunday. "This sad accident caused the death of 26 people. Twenty-two bodies have been recovered." A local resident, Martala Salley, told AFP that the passengers were farmers who had decided to go to their fields by boat as the river had risen from seasonal rain, which made water transport possible. Governor asks Odisha govt to expedite relief work

Odisha Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal Monday asked the state government to expedite relief work and provide assistance to the people hit by the twin calamities of cyclone Titli and resultant floods. The governor mentioned that the severe floods resulting from heavy rainfall during post cyclonic storm Titli, have wrecked the state causing casualties and loss of property. The governor expressed his deepest condolences over the loss of lives following landslide in Gajapati district describing the incident as "unfortunate".
