Landslide disrupts traffic in Shimla

Normal traffic remained disrupted for hours due to a landslide following heavy rains in the Dhalli area on the outskirts of the Shimla city today. Shimla Deputy Commissioner Amit Kashyap and Superintendent of Police Omapati Jamwal visited the area to take stock of the situation, an official release issued here said. The traffic has been diverted from the road near Dhalli police station where the landslide occurred, Kashyap said.

Rain fury in north India, 27 killed in UP

Heavy rains lashed northern parts of the country, claiming 27 lives in Uttar Pradesh and leading to water logging and traffic snarls in several areas. Mathura and Kasganj in Uttar Pradesh recieved 19 cm and 18 cm rain respectively. Aligarh recorded 13 cm rainfall as the state was wreceked by heavy rains since yesterday. Twenty-seven people were killed and 12 injured in thr rains. Five people died in Agra, four deaths were reported in Mainpuri, three each in Muzaffarnagar and Kasganj, two each in Meerut and Bareilly and one each in Kanpur Dehat, Mathura, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Jhansi, Rae Bareli, Jalaun and Jaunpur. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to launch relief and rescue work on a war footing. Rains also pounded the national capital which led to water logging in several areas and contributed to traffic snarls at various intersections. Railway claims tribunal awards compensation to families of 4

The Railway Claims Tribunal here has awarded a compensation of Rs eight lakh each to the families of four passengers killed in an accident here on Tuesday, after they hit a wall and fell off a suburban train. The Chennai Bench of the Tribunal has suo motu (on its own) directed that Rs eight lakh be deposited for each of the "four cases of death," and Rs two lakh to the five people injured in the accident, a release from the RTC Additional Registrar J Arundathi said. "This order is the first of its kind where the compensations are directed to be deposited by the Railways even without any formal application by the victims or their families," the release said. The tribunal has ordered release of Rs two lakh in each of the cases of death and Rs 50,000 for injuries from the amounts deposited, which will be adjusted against the final outcome of the awards when full particulars are gathered, it said. Fire blocks major Paris station at height of holiday exodus

A major fire in the Paris suburbs paralysed traffic in and out of the city's Montparnasse train station today, just as thousands of French travellers head off on their holidays this weekend. Photos and videos posted on Twitter showed a massive plume of smoke rising into the skies from an electrical centre run by the national transport network in Versailles, southwest of the city. The blaze shut down traffic just before noon at Montparnasse, the main station connecting Paris to west and southwest France, with rail operator SNCF warning of heavy disruption for the rest of the day. "Those who can delay their journeys need to delay them," Alain Krakovitch, a senior official at rail operator SNCF, told reporters at Montparnasse. Five dead in DR Congo plane crash

Five people burned to death after a small passenger aircraft crashed today in southern Democratic Republic of Congo near the border with Angola, a local official said, giving a provisional toll. The piston-engined Antonov 2, operated by local airline Air Kasai, burst into flames after crashing just after takeoff from Kamako for a flight to Tshikapa, 150 km away. "The plane crashed into the brush three kilometres (two miles) from Kamako," said Anacletus Muswa Kapinga Safia, the deputy territorial administrator. "Only two people got out, the pilot and a passenger. They are unable to talk," he said. "We already know that five people have died. We will know the final toll when the company provides us with the passenger list." The crash is the second in a month in DR Congo's sprawling Kasai province. Last month, a light plane chartered by the World Food Programme (WFP) had an accident on takeoff at Kamonia, leaving several people injured.

Factory employee killed as tin shed collapses during downpour

An employee of a paper mill under Sikheda police station limits in Muzzaffarnagar district was killed today after a tin shed in the factory came down on him during heavy rains, police said. The deceased was identified as 43-year-old V V Tiwari, who worked as a production manager in the paper mill, they said. After the collapse, he was rushed to hospital but doctors there declared him dead. At least 27 people were killed since yesterday, including three in Muzaffarnagar, as heavy rains wreaked havoc in different parts of Uttar Pradesh, according to a government spokesperson. Incessant rains have thrown normal life out of gear in Muzaffarnagar and its neighbouring districts.

Youth killed in car crash in JK

A 19-year-old youth was killed while three of his friends were seriously injured in a fatal car crash in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district today, police said. The brand new Maruti Alto car, on its way to Doda from Bhaderwah, was being driven at a high speed when the driver allegedly used his hand-brake resulting in the vehicle hitting a parapet and turning turtle near village Kulsari, they said. College students Mohit Bhagat (19), Arush Kotwal (18), Rahul Bloria (18) and Rohit (19)-- the driver of the car-- were rushed to the sub district hospital in Bhaderwah. Bhagat was declared brought dead by the doctors, police said. Bloria and Kotwal were later shifted to Government Medical College in Jammu for further treatment as they had suffered grave injuries, they added. Eight people killed in 2 road mishaps in Nepal

Eight persons, including two children, were killed and 23 others injured in two separate road accidents in Nepal today when a bus and a car fell into the Trishuli river, police said. Seven persons were killed when a bus, carrying 28 passengers, fell into the river at Chumlingtar in Ichhakamana of Chitwan Rural Municipality in Chitwan, about 60 km west of Kathmandu, this morning. According to police, the accident happened when the bus, en route Syangja from Kathmandu, veered off the road after hitting a truck that had suddenly entered the highway from an open space used for parking vehicles. Boeing's Apache, Chinook choppers for India complete inaugural flights

American aerospace giant Boeing today said it has completed the first flights of Apache and Chinook military helicopters which will be delivered to India next year. India is procuring 22 Apache attack helicopters and 15 Chinook heavy-lift choppers from Boeing. "First flight of India's Apache and Chinook helicopters are important milestones towards strengthening Indian armed forces' capabilities," Boeing India president Pratyush Kumar said. He said India will receive the most-advanced versions of both AH-64E Apache and CH-47F Chinook helicopters. "Indian industry partners such as Dynamatics is building large sections of Chinook, and the Tata Boeing joint venture in Hyderabad is building the complete fuselage of the Apache," he said in a statement. India had finalised a contract with Boeing for 22 Apaches and 15 Chinooks for the air force in September 2015. The rescue of a baby boy, terrified and hungry after days without food, has been captured in a viral video showing the infant survivor of a dam collapse in southern Laos being carefully carried through swirling flood waters and waist-high mud. Moderate intensity quake hits Kangra in Himachal

A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale shook Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district this afternoon but there was no report of any casualty or damage to property, the Meteorological department said. The quake's epicentre was at a depth of 10 km in Kangra district, the department said, adding that tremors were felt in and around the district at 1.42 pm today. This is the second earthquake within three days in Kangra. Earlier, a low intensity earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale hit Kangra on July 25.

Manila-bound flight diverted to Hyderabad due to medical emergency

A Manila-bound Philippines Airlines flight was diverted to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here early this morning due to a medical emergency, sources said. A woman passenger complained of breathing problem on board the aircraft and the pilot sought permission to land at the airport here, the sources added. After landing, doctors at the airport treated her and declared her fit to fly, they said, adding that the Riyadh-Manila plane then took off to the Philippines. "The flight was diverted to Hyderabad at 2.30 am due to medical issues with one woman passenger on board. She was treated at the airport and the aircraft took off again at 5.30 am," the sources said.
