Chinese premier orders investigation of vaccine makers

China's No. 2 leader has ordered an investigation of its vaccine industry after violations by a rabies vaccine producer prompted a public outcry following scandals over shoddy drugs and food. In a statement, Premier Li Keqiang said the incident involving Changchun Changsheng Life Sciences Ltd, which is accused of fabricating production and inspection records, "violated a moral bottom line." The incident is an embarrassment for Chinese leaders who have struggled to restore public faith in safety regulation following deaths and injuries due to fake and shoddy drugs, milk and other goods. In the statement yesterday, Li promised to "resolutely crack down" on violations that endanger public safety. There were no reports of injuries due to the rabies vaccine but the disclosure prompted an outpouring of criticism online. 5-storey under-construction building collapses in Ghaziabad; 1 dead, 7 injured

A five-storey under-construction building collapsed here today, killing at least one person and injuring seven, officials said. District Magistrate Ritu Maheshwari said the building was being constructed illegally. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered an inquiry into the incident. A magisterial probe has also been initiated into the collapse of the illegal structure in the Akash Nagar area, she said. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel were pressed into service soon after the incident and rescue and search operations were underway, police said. "So far, we have pulled out one body and rescued one person trapped under the debris," an NDRF official told PTI. Director General of Police O P Singh in a statement identified the deceased as Rahul. Iran jolted by moderate, light earthquakes; 150 injured

Iran was jolted by a series of moderate and light earthquakes today, including a 5.9 magnitude temblor in a mountainous western region in which officials said some 150 people were injured. The first temblor, measuring a magnitude of 4.6 rocked the town of Ruydar, in Hormozgan province, earlier in the day. The town is located some 940 kilometers, or 580 miles, south of the capital, Tehran. It was followed shortly after by a 5.4 magnitude aftershock, according to the United States Geological Survey. Iran's semi-official news agency had initially reported the magnitude at 5.7. No injuries were reported. In the afternoon, a 5.9 magnitude quake rocked an area in western Iran near the border with Iraq in Kermanshah province. A London-bound Jet Airways flight from Mumbai was today diverted to Bucharest in Romania due to a medical emergency, but it remained stranded there reportedly for more than four hours, passengers complained. Ghaziabad building collapse: VK Singh assures action against those responsible

Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs VK Singh on Sunday assured strict action against guilty in the building collapse incident in Ghaziabad, which claimed one life.Singh, who is Member of Parliament from Ghaziabad, told ANI that he has directed the administration to order an evacuation of illegal buildings and demolish them if required."The inquiry has been ordered. Odisha govt warns of possible low to medium flood in Mahanadi

The Odisha government today warned of a possible "low to medium" flood in Mahanadi river system with rise in the water flow even as rain subsided in most parts of the state. The death toll in rain-related incidents rose to five with two more deaths reported today. One person was swept away by the flood water in Kalamati village in Sambalpur district while another died of snakebite in Tarava block of Sonepur district, officials said. Three people had lost their lives in rain-related incidents yesterday as incessant rain battered many areas. About 7.5 to 8.0 lakh cusec of water may pass at Munduli by tomorrow evening and "low to medium flood situation" may occur in Mahanadi river system, according to Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Bishnupada Sethi. The district collectors of Jajpur, Cuttack, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Khordha have been alerted and instructed to draw up an emergency plan to meet any eventuality, he said. Kerala rains: Over 1 lakh people remain in relief camps

More than one lakh flood-affected people continue to stay in make-shift relief camps in Kerala though there was a respite from rain for the past two days. As the water level has not receded in several places in Alappuzha, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts, people were still housed in relief camps with bare minium facilities. State control room that monitors rain-related incidents in the state said as on today nearly 1.17 lakh people were still living in 600 relief camps functioning in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta Ernakualam and Thrissur districts. The toll in rain-related incidents in Kerala has gone up to 41 since the onset of monsoon during the second spell from July 9. Meanwhile, people staying in relief camps for the seventh-day complained of lack of adequate drinking water and toilet facilities among others. 2 relatives of NRI businessman Atul Gupta killed in car crash in UP

Two women related to NRI industrialist Ajay Gupta's younger brother Atul, died in a road accident here today, while five other family members, including two children, were seriously injured, police said. The seven members related to Atul Gupta's wife were returning home in Saharanpur's Madho Nagar from Delhi when around 11 am their car collided with a stationary truck on the Saharanpur-Mazzaffarnagar state highway near Deoband, they said. Manju Gupta (70) and Namita Gupta (32) died in the crash, while Anshul Gupta (45), Rajiv Gupta, Shaily Gupta (40), Mahi Gupta (12) and Bhavya (10) sustained injuries, SP (Rural) Vidyasagar Mishra said. Two more killed in rain-related incidents in Odisha

Two more people died in rain-related incidents in Odisha even as downpour subsided in most parts of the state, barring some western districts, officials said. One person was swept away by flood water in Kalamati village in Sambalpur district while another died of snakebite in Tarava block of Sonepur district, they said. Yesterday, three people lost their lives in rain-related incidents after heavy downpour. Four killed, three injured as speeding truck hits them

Four persons were killed and three injured when a speeding truck hit them in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district today, police said. The driver of the speeding truck lost control over the vehicle in Usti area of the district, they said. Youth run over by train in J-K

In the fourth such incident this week, a youth died after being hit by a train here, an official said today. Roshan Lal, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was crossing the railway tracks when he was hit by the train this morning, he said. The body of the deceased was recovered and later handed over to his family for last rites. This was the fourth such incident in the past five days in Jammu province. 25 injured in Iran earthquakes: state TV

A series of moderate earthquakes in southern and western Iran today injured an estimated 25 people, state television said. Two quakes struck a remote region near the town of Lar in the southern Hormozgan province shortly after 10:030 IST, according to the US Geological Survey. The strongest of the two had a magnitude of 5.4. Another 5.9-magnitude quake struck a rural part of the western Kermanshah province at 0340 IST. An AFP reporter said that quake was "felt strongly" across the border in Iraq's Sulaymaniyah province. State television said some damage had been reported in villages and that 25 people had been injured, without giving details of their locations.
