5 more die in Assam flood, toll rises to 12

The flood situation in Assam continued to deteriorate with five more people losing their lives during the past 24 hours, while 4.5 lakh people have been affected in the deluge across six districts. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), five persons lost their lives in flood-related incidents in three districts during the last 24 hours. With this, the death toll has climbed to 12 in the first wave of flood in Assam this year. While two persons died at Udharbond and one in Sadar revenue circles in Cachar district, one each lost their lives at Hailakandi and Sadar revenue circles in Hailakandi and Karimganj districts respectively, it added. The ASDMA said over 4.48 lakh people have been affected in Hojai, Karbi Anglong West, Golaghat, Karimganj, Hailakandi and Cachar districts. Hry govt directs officers to take steps to prevent floods

A senior Haryana bureaucrat today directed the officers concerned to complete all kinds of arrangements to avoid dangers of possible floods during the monsoon season before June 30. Haryana's Additional Chief Secretary and Finance Commissioner, Revenue and Disaster Management, Keshni Anand Arora chaired a meeting of the officers of district administration and other departments in Yamunanagar district. She directed the officers to simultaneously coordinate with the Central Ground Water Board and Meteorological Department. Arora asked them to strengthen their information system and to remain in contact with the officers of the Army, Air Force and NDRF. She directed them to coordinate with the senior officers of the Irrigation Department of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh to get information regarding rising water level in the rivers in these states.

J-K govt sanctions ex-gratia relief for landslide victims

The Jammu and Kahsmir government has sanctioned ex-gratia relief of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of those killed in a landslide in Kishtwar district of Jammu region. Three women were killed and five children of a nomadic tribe were injured yesterday when a landslide hit their tent. The Bakarwal families from Pathernaki, Kishtwar got trapped after their tents came under a landslide at Shasho Pader, a forest area of Kishtwar district. The deceased were identified as Zeenam, Maryam and Zareena. Minister for disaster management, relief and rehabilitation and floriculture Javaid Mustafa Mir directed the deputy commissioner of Kishtwar district to ensure that ex-gratia relief is disbursed to their families immediately. He asked the district administration to assess the loss of their livestock and provide relief, in accordance with the NDRF/SDRF norms, without any delay.

TN govt announces solatium to lorry accident victims

The Tamil Nadu government today announced solatium to the families of nine persons hailing from the state, who were killed in an accident at Kuppam in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. Of the nine victims, six were killed on the spot and the rest succumbed to injuries at a hospital, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said. "I extend my condolences and sympathies to families of the nine persons killed in the mishap," he said. The chief minister announced Rs one lakh each to the families of the deceased, Rs 50,000 for persons who had sustained severe injuries and Rs 25,000 for those with minor injuries. A total of 22 persons were injured in the incident, he said. The relief amount will be given from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund (CPMRF), he added. A team of state revenue and police officials had brought back the bodies to Tamil Nadu. All the victims hailed from Vellore district. Toll in lorry accident in AP rises to 9

The toll in the accident that took place at Peddavanka on the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border near Kuppam 150 km from here, rose to nine, the police said today. The incident took place last night when a speeding lorry laden with mangoes and carrying about 30 farm workers, rolled down into a gorge at Peddavanka forest near Kuppam after the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a curve. The dead include three women and two boys aged 14 and 16 years, the police said. The lorry was on its way to Vaniyambadi in Tamil Nadu from Kuppam. Village in C'garh grapples with spate of kidney ailments

Residents of a small village in Chhattisgarh's Gariaband district are battling kidney-related ailments, which has claimed 64 lives in the last one decade. The government authorities were yet to find the exact cause of these ailments, though residents of the Supebeda village said the contaminated drinking water was taking a toll on their health. The village, deep inside a forest with barely any proper road to reach there, is located nearly 12 km from the Deobhog town in the Naxal-hit Gariaband district and around 220 km away from the state capital. Supebeda has a population of around 1,500, comprising mostly scheduled caste (SC) and tribal people. Ironically, while the Deobhog area is known for diamond deposits, its natives say they have no access to basic amenities like clean drinking water and health facilities. DMK opposes Centre's approval to enact Dam Safety Bill

The DMK today strongly opposed the Union Cabinet's approval to enact a Dam Safety Bill, accusing the BJP-led government at the Centre of launching "yet another attack on the states' autonomy." DMK Working President MK Stalin said the matter came under the State List and wondered how a proposed agency in Delhi could oversee the safety of a dam in Tamil Nadu. Death toll in Chilika boat tragedy rises to six

The death toll in the Chilika Lake boat capsize incident today climbed to six with the recovery of four more bodies this morning, a district official said. Twelve people, who were rescued by local fishermen, Navy and fire brigade personnel, have been sent to Balugaon Community Health Centre (CHC) in Khurda district and the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, he told reporters. Floods claim lives of 4 people in Bangladesh

Four people have been killed in floods in Moulvibazar's Komolganj Upazila in Bangladesh.At least five people are still missing.Thousand others have been stranded since the night of June 15. The names and identities of the missing people are not known yet, Dhaka Tribune reported.The hilly water has damaged flood protection embankments in the district worsening the flood situation.The army has begun rescuing stranded locals in Kulaura and Rajnagar near the overflowing Monu River.Deputy Commissioner Md Tofayel Ahmed said 143 tons of rice has been allocated for the flood-affected areas. 10 Gurudwaras implement FSSAI food safety guidelines for Langars

Ten Gurudwaras in the national capital including the historical Bangla Sahib Gurudwara have implemented the food safety and hygiene standards set by food regulator FSSAI. The stricter set of food safety standards and hygiene have been put in place at all the 10 Gurudwaras where around one lakh devotees partake Langar, said Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated Project BHOG (Blissful Hygienic Offering to God) to encourage all places of worship in the country to adopt and maintain food safety and hygiene in the preparation of Prasad. Woman dies of smoke inhalation after fire breaks out in Mumbai

A 55-year-old woman died of smoke inhalation caused by a fire that broke out today in a residential building in suburban Borivali, a BMC disaster control official said. The incident happened in the evening at Shimpoli Road in Borivali West, the official added. The woman, identified as Jaya Gharasia, died due to smoke inhalation, the official said. Another woman, Laxmi Arola (35) suffered serious injuries in the fire and is currently undergoing treatment at Shatabdi Hospital nearby, the official said. At least two persons, including a minor, drowned and two others went missing after a boat capsized in the Chilika Lake due to a thunderstorm in Odisha today, official sources said. 7 farm workers killed, 12 injured in lorry mishap in AP

At least seven farm workers, including three women from Tamil Nadu, were killed and 12 others injured today when a lorry carrying them rolled down into a gorge at Peddavanka forest near Kuppam, 110 km from here. The mishap occurred late tonight as the driver lost control of the lorry while negotiating a curve, polie said.
