Centre launches 'Rail MADAD', 'Menu on Rails' mobile apps

The Ministry of Railways on Monday launched two mobile applications to ease the travelling experience.The two apps, 'Rail MADAD' and 'Menu on Rails', were launched by Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State (MoS) Manoj Sinha during a press conference organised to highlight the achievements of the Ministry in the last four years.While Rail MADAD will enable travellers to lodge complaints, Menu on Rails will facilitate seamless ordering of food.Talking about the progress of the Railways in the last four years, Goyal said safety has been made the top priority of the government, keeping in mind the philosophy of 'Saaf Niyat, Sahi Vikas' (development with the right intention in the right direction)"The theme for development this year is to improve connectivity for the poor, in line with Mahatma Gandhi's ideologies. Train service between Hassan and Mangaluru suspended due to

Train services between Hassanand Mangaluru have been suspended indefinitely following landslide at three places and uprooting of tree on the railwaytrack last night. Railways bore the brunt of torrential rains with the advent of monsoon in many parts of Karnataka for the past few days. Railway officials told PTI that the Yashwanthpur-Karwar Express was short-terminated at Hassan due to the landslide and the fares were refunded to the passengers. Similarly, Mangaluru-Yashwanthpur Gommateshwara Express (16576) was also rerouted via Palghat and Erode to reach Bengaluru. A Railway official said there were multiple problems between Kadagaravalli, Yedakumeri and Shrivagilu. "There were landslides at eight places and tree incidents of collapse at Shrivagilu. Restoration work is on. We heard that there was a heavy downpour - about 219 mm rainfall due to which the problem took place," he added. Blast outside Kabul govt ministry, casualties feared: officials

Casualites are feared after a blast outside a government ministry in Kabul today as employees were leaving their offices early for Ramadan. "An explosion happened at the exit gate of the ministry," Daud Naimi, spokesman for the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, told AFP. At least five people were wounded, he said, but that could not be immediately verified.

Two killed in car-motorcycle collision in Jharkhand

Two persons, including a woman, were killed and another suffered injuries when a car hit a motorcycle on NH-33 before falling into a ditch near Bongbar village in Jharkhand's Ramgarh district, a police officer said. The woman, along with her family members, was returning from Bihar's Rohtas district in a car, when around 4pm the driver lost control of the wheels while trying to prevent a collision with a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction, Santosh Kumar Gupta, the officer in-charge of Kuju police outpost in Ramgarh, said. "Despite attempts, the driver could not save the day and hit the bike, killing the motorcyclist on the spot. Another person, riding pillion, suffered injuries in the collision," he said, adding that the driver and two other passengers in the car escaped unhurt even after falling into the ditch. The injured person was sent to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi, sources said.

16 dead in rain-related incidents in Kerala: Minister

Torrential rains accompanied by gusty winds that lashed parts of Kerala for the past two days after the monsoon set in on May 29 has claimed 16 lives so far and caused damage to crops worth over Rs 6 crore, Minister for Revenue E Chandrasekharan said here today. As per a preliminary estimate, 1,109 houses were partially damaged and 61 fully destroyed in the rains, while 122 people from 33 families have been shifted to relief camps, the minister told the state assembly. Agriculture loss was estimated at Rs 6.34 crore in 188.41 hectares of farm land, the minister said to a submission by Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala, adding the calamity has affected 2,784 farmers. The families of the deceased would be given Rs four lakh from the State Disaster Relief Fund, he said adding compensation also would be given to people whose houses have been damaged. 5.1-magnitude earthquake rocks Assam

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale today rocked Assam, according to the Regional Seismological Centre. There was no immediate report of any damage or casualty, officials said here. According to a report of the Regional Seismological Centre at Shillong, the epicentre of the medium intensity earthquake, was at a place 22 kilometre from Dhing in Nagaon district. The epicentre was at latitude 26. 2 degree North and Longitude 92.5 degree East.

Seven killed in accident on Lucknow-Agra Expressway

Six students and a teacher were crushed to death while two others were injured after being hit by a speeding bus on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway this morning, police said. According to a police spokesperson, the accident took place in Tirwa area of the district at around 4.00 am. "The accident occurred when students were filling diesel from one bus to another, and were run over by a bus, which was passing by. As of now seven person including a teacher and students have died, while two others are injured," the police spokesperson said. The students were from Sant Kabirnagar district and were going to Haridwar. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed sorrow over the loss of life. US fighter jet crashes off Japan coast: media

A US F15 fighter jet crashed off the southern coast of Japan on Monday, local media reported, adding that the jet's pilot ejected and was rescued by Japanese forces. There was no immediate confirmation of the crash from the defence ministry, which said it was gathering information on the report, or the US military. The Kyodo news agency said the jet belonged to the US Kadena Air Base and crashed early this morning about 80 kilometres south of Naha, the regional capital of Japan's southern Okinawa island. Japan's NHK television station said the rescued pilot had a broken leg. Kadena is the largest US military base in Japan, which hosts around 47,000 American troops under a decades-long security alliance. Crash of small plane in Wisconsin kills 4 family members

A small plane has crashed in southern Wisconsin, killing four family members. The Green County Sheriff's Office says the crash happened today about a mile north of the Monroe Municipal Airport. Sheriff Mark Rohloff says the single-engine Cessna 182T went down in a field and struck some trees. WKOW-TV reports that Rohloff says the pilot was a grandmother and the three passengers were her daughter and two granddaughters. All four died at the scene. The Wisconsin State Journal reports that Rohloff says the plane was scheduled to arrive in Monroe after taking off from the Kenosha Regional Airport in the morning. Rohloff says a witness heard the plane losing power, saw it descending and noticed flames coming from it. Firefighters put out a fire at the scene. Federal officials are investigating.

6 killed, 4 injured in road accident in UP

At least six people were killed and four others injured when a truck collided with a four-wheeler here this afternoon, police said. The accident took place in Arkha gram sabha area under the Unchchar police station, they added. "A truck moving on the Unchahar-Allahabad road collided with an SUV coming from Mangarh (in Pratapgargh district)," Superintendent of Police Sujata Singh said. Keshkali (55), Anoopa Devi (40), Pari (2), Aradhya (18 months) and Prince (12) died on the spot, she said. "Ankush Maurya (24) succumbed to injuries at the district hospital," Singh added. Four people sustained severe injuries and were undergoing treatment, while another person was administered first aid as he had received only minor wounds. The bodies of the deceased were sent for postmortem, police added.

11500 cases of drunk driving registered in Hyderabad

Bus on way to Badrinath overturns; 2 women pilgrims killed, 15 injured

Two women pilgrims were killed and 15 others injured after their bus overturned in Uttarakhand's Tehri district while they on their way to Badrinath, according to a police release. The accident occurred near the Bageshwar bridge on the Rishikesh-Badrinath Highway, a police press release said. One woman was killed on the spot and the other during treatment at a hospital, it said. Fifteen people were injured in the accident. They were taken to the Bagi community health centre from where four who had suffered serious injuries were taken to a base hospital in Shrinagar, the release said. The deceased were identified as Sushma Jain (64) and Nisha Jain (51), it said. The passengers of the bus were from Sahibabad inUttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad district.

No respite for Shimla from plastic and environmental hazards

The plastic and domestic waste due to the flooding of rainwater is resulting in environmental hazards with the blocking of roads and drains in the suburbs of Shimla.The waste in the flooded drains and roads is not only resulting in hazards to the local environment but also creating trouble for the commuters on National Highway 5.Speaking to ANI, National Highway Supervisor, Pradeep Kumar said, "Due to rain, waste keeps piling up. IMD to forecast floods using new system, soil study data

A new system and soil study data will soon enable the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to also forecast floods and guide the disaster management agencies on prevention techniques. Currently, the Central Water Commission (CWC) issues flood warnings. IMD Director General (DG) K J Ramesh told Bhasha that the national weather agency was preparing to launch this service from the next month by using the Flash Flood Guidance System (FFGS) for the first time in the country. "The service will be started for the first time with the help of this system," he said. "As of now, the system is being tested. We hope to start it from the next month," he added. In a first for the IMD, it will also apprise the CWC and other concerned agencies about the necessary steps to deal with the aftermath of floods. Ramesh said that different kinds of soil from different parts of the country had been studied to find out how absorbent each variety was. This, along with the rain forecast, will help to ascertain .

Rains in Kerala kill 13

Thirteen people were killed after heavy rain lashed several parts of Kerala since the onset of monsoon.Also, the strong wind which hit parts of state on Saturday led to falling of trees and electric poles at several locations causing traffic or blockade of roads.Heavy rain continued in districts like Idukki, Kozhikode and Kannur of the state.The rain also caused major damage to crops and property in Idukki, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts.Monsoon has already hit Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and North-East, and will move up north from Maharashtra.

Lightning kills aspiring cricketer

A 21-year-old aspiring cricketer from Serampore of Hooghly district died today after being struck by lightning at the Vivekananda Park, a club official said. All-rounder Debabrata Pal, who joined the Calcutta Cricket Academy located in the Vivekananda Park in South Kolkata last month, collapsed after lightning struck him, according to secretary of the club Abdul Masood. We were about to start our practice session when lightning began in the afternoon. He suddenly collapsed and we rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead, the official said.
