Lightning kills one, injures three in Odisha

A 35-year-old woman was killed and three others were injured when lightning struck them in Ganjam district today, police said. Lightning struck them when they were returning after taking bath in the river at Ashurabandh village, about 80-km from here, the police said. The deceased was identified as Sajani Gouda, said inspector-in-charge of Sorada police station, Pravat Sahoo. The injured persons were admitted at Sorada hospital and their condition was stated to be stable, police added.

Three killed in house collapse during dust-storm in Rajasthan

A 70-year-old woman and her two grandsons were killed when their house collapsed during dust storm and rains in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh district, police said today. The incident occurred in Pareek Colony of Hanumangarh town area where a 'kutcha' house collapsed due to dust storm. The deceased have bene identified as Gyani Devi (70) and her grandsons Punit (3) and Pradeep (5), head constable Rajendra Singh said. The mother of the children, Tanu (30), sustained injuries and was referred to Bikaner for treatment. The house was old and the family members were sleeping when the incident occurred. Tanu's husband Balram had gone out for work in a neighbouring town, they said.

Exam answer scripts gutted in fire in Osmania university

A few answer-scripts of the undergraduate B Sc degree course of the academic year 2017-18 were gutted in a fire that broke out at the spot valuation centre of Osmania University here, officials said today. The university said in a press release that the blaze erupted yesterday and the fire and rescue services personnel put out the flames. The fire was reportedly caused by an electrical short-circuit and damaged the answer-scripts, it said. Assistant commissioner of police Ch Laxminarayana told PTI that the damaged answer-scripts were those of BSc semester examination. Preliminary investigation revealed that the cause of the fire was the electrical short-circuit, the police official said, adding "It was an accidental fire." The university said it has constituted a committee to inquire into the fire to assess the extent of damage and submit a report in two days.

Four auto-rickshaw passengers killed

Four persons were killed and one was injured when the auto-rickshaw carrying them was hit by a heavy vehicle near here in the district early today, police said. The collision took place on NH-31 in Bhavanipur police station area and all the four passengers of the three-wheeler were killed, SP of Naugachhia police district Nidhi Rani said. The deceased were identified as Ramchandra Ram (50), Sintu Yadav (30), Ashutosh Kumar Singh (40) and Mithilesh Yadav (48). Rani said Sikandar Yadav, who owned and drove the auto-rickshaw, was seriously injured and he has been referred to a hospital in Bhagalpur. "It is not clear what kind of vehicle had hit the three-wheeler. Its mangled condition suggests that it had been collided with a truck or a similar heavy vehicle," she said. The SP said details would be known only after Sikandar's condition improves and he becomes able to give a statement.

4-year-old dies of suffocation in Delhi

A four-year-old died in RK Puram sector 12, after he was suffocated from smoke due to a fire.The child was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.A short circuit in the junction box at the house was the cause of the fire. The fire broke out at 1:12 am on Tuesday night and came under control at around 2 am.Three more people named Pankaj (37), Swati (34), and Darshana (74) were trapped in the fire.However, all are presently under treatment and stable.The rescue team was able to evacuate everyone on time. Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) Rajpal and HC Sanjiv reached the spot on time, along with two Police Control Room vans, an ambulance and a fire brigade.

Minor boy dies, 3 injured in fire in southwest Delhi

A four-year-old boy died of suffocation and three others were injured today after a fire broke out in a house in southwest Delhi's R K Puram, police said. A call was received at 1 am about the fire and three fire-tenders were rushed to the spot, an officer from the Delhi Fire Service said. The fire was doused at 2.05 am, he added. The fire started due to short-circuit in a junction box of the house, police said. Four persons, including the boy, were found in an unconscious condition and were rushed to a hospital, they said. The boy, Abhinav, died due to suffocation, police said. The injured, identified as Pankaj (37), Swati (34) and Darshana (74), are undergoing treatment and are out of danger, they said.

3 dead in Bangladesh road mishap

At least three people were killed on Wednesday in a road mishap, involving, collision between a truck and a pickup van in Bangladesh's Kalihati upazila (sub-district) of Tangail district in Dhaka Division.The deceased have not been identified as of now.The incident took place between a Dhaka-bound truck and a pickup van in Shoratoil area around 9am, the Dhaka Tribune reported, quoting Bangabandhu Bridge East police station Officer-in-Charge Mosharaf Hossain.The accident claimed three lives on the spot and left one wounded, who has been shifted to the hospital for the treatment, the report said.

23 rescued after blast in iron mine in China; 2 missing

Twenty-three workers were rescued today from an iron mine in China's northeast Liaoning province, hours after they were trapped by a powerful explosion that claimed the lives of 11 people and left nine others injured, authorities said. The blast took place at 4:10 PM (local time yesterday) when miners were dropping explosives down the 1,000-metre-deep mine shaft. The explosion killed 11 people, injured nine others who were above ground, and destroyed the hoisting system in the mine, trapping 25 miners underground. The first batch of six miners were lifted out of the shaft at around 5:20 AM, and another 17 were lifted as of 7:25 AM, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Two others still remain missing. IMD predicts thunderstorm for UP

The Indian Metrological Department on Wednesday forecasted rain and thunderstorm to hit various parts of Uttar Pradesh in the next few hours today.Bareilly, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Moradabad, Rampur, Sambhal, Agra and adjoining areas are the most likely area to receive rains and thunderstorms.On a related note, a thunderstorm had hit various regions of the state late last week, with at least 15 people losing their lives and nine others getting injured.Causalities were reported from Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Amroha, and Sambhal districts of the state.Trees, electric poles, and hoardings also fell down at some place.In the same week, a deadly storm claimed over 30 lives in various states across the country, including Bihar and Jharkhand.

4 dead, 13 wounded in Lahore due to dust storm

Dust storm, followed by rainfall, which hit Lahore on Tuesday, has claimed lives of at least four people and left thirteen others wounded.Among the deceased are two minors and death toll is likely to increase, Geo TV reported, citing the anonymous officials, as saying.Dust storms struck the capital city Islamabad and Lahore.Lahore's residential areas like Garhi Shahu, Dharampur, Davis Road, Allama Iqbal road, Sahafi Colony, Harbanspura witnessed disrupted electricity due to storms, the report said.The "strong" winds brought to the ground, a slew of trees and left the window panes of a few buildings in the city broken.Furthermore, the storm is reported to have ravaged two aircrafts belonging to the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).The planes have been grounded and inspected.On Tuesday, Pakistan's Meteorological Department had forecast rainfall for Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore division, the report stated.
