MaharashtraRevenue Minister Chandrakant Patil today saidthe state government was going to demand a Rs 3,373 crore package from the Centre to provide relief to farmers whose crops were destroyed by the pink bollworm and jumping bug (called 'tudtudya' in Maharashtra). Speaking in the Assembly, Patil said the farmers who havesuffered more than 33 per cent croploss due to these pests would get relief under the package. The proposal will be sent to the Centre soon, he said, adding that an earlier proposal of a Rs 2,200 crore relief package was scrapped.

A spokeswoman for the firefighters told AFP she did not yet know the identity or nationality of the victims, but said they were doing "scientific" research in the area. Thirteen holiday hikers, including Chinese citizens, were rescued today after getting trapped overnight by a late-season snowfall on a Tokyo mountain trail. Seven who were unable to descend on their own were airlifted off the mountain, Tokyo police and disaster officials said. Japanese television showed some being taken up to helicopters hovering above the snow-covered woods. Some of those airlifted were injured, including one seriously, though their condition was not life-threatening, officials said. The six others walked down, escorted by rescue workers. Officials at the Tokyo Medical University Hachioji Medical Center in nearby Hachioji city, where four of the hikers were treated, said a 34-year-old Chinese woman suffered hypothermia and a broken pelvis, while another Chinese hiker, a 34-year-old man, suffered head injuries and hypothermia. In a televised news conference, the hospital's emergency center chief, Takao Arai, quoted the hikers as saying they were shivering in the cold .
Six people got killed on Thursday in an incident of a blast at a chemical factory at Prague in Russia.An unspecified number of people have been wounded in the incident, Sputnik quoted Vladimira Kerekova from the rescue team as saying.Two of those injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital while one of them had to be transported via an air ambulance.As per the local police, the incident of the explosion was reported at around 12:30 pm post following which a police team was dispatched to the location.Further, it has been reported that the incident occurred on the outskirts of the city and that the residents of the city are safe.No threat of any subsequent blast is foreseen.

Two youths were killed when their bike was hit by a vehicle in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said today. The accident occurred in Nowshera belt of the district last evening, they said. The youths were shifted to GMC hospital in Jammu, where they succumbed to their injuries, police said, adding the deceased have been identified as Suresh and Rakesh.
Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have issued a low-danger avalanche warning for high altitude areas of various districts in the state, advising people to take precautionary measures. "On the basis of information received from the Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE), a low-danger avalanche warning has been issued for various high altitude areas," an official spokesperson said. He said that the warning has been issued for Baramulla, Gulmarg, Furkian-Z Gali, Kupwara, Chowkibal-Tangdhar, Kulgam, Badgam, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Bandipora, Gurez in Kashmir, besides Srinagar-Jammu National Highway for next 24 hours, he said. The warning was also issued for Kargil and Leh in the Ladakh region; Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar and Udhampur in Jammu region, the spokesperson said. He said the people living in these avalanche-prone areas have been advised by the disaster management authority to take precautionary measures.

Thirty people were treated for gas exposure after Mount Ijen in eastern Java belched toxic fumes from its crater, Indonesia's disaster agency said today. Spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that dozens of residents of several villages on the volcano's slopes had to flee. The mountain is known for its stunning sulfur lake and night-time sulfur mining involving dangerous and backbreaking work by low paid laborers. Sutopo said Ijen's summit is now temporarily off limits to activities but the volcano's overall status remains normal. A resident of Sempol village in Ijen district said the gas spread from the volcano sometime on Wednesday evening, state news agency Antara reported.
