US-Bangla airline crashes in Kathmandu airport

A US-Bangla airline crash landed and caught fire in the Tribhuvan International Airport here on Monday.According to The Himalayan Times, rescue operations have begun and passengers were being taken out from the burning plane.Emergency respondents and ambulances were seen rushing to the site of the incident.Many airline jets en route to Kathmandu are turning back, including jets from Oman Air, Qatar Airways and FlyDubai.The Tribhuvan International Airport has been closed to all departures and arrivals.More details are awaited.

Two killed in MP mine collapse

Two women died and five other persons were injured today when a mound of earth fell on them while they were extracting mud at a mine in Karmora village, 40 kms away from the district headquarters, police said. The pit was dug by a private firm for laying a pipeline. According to a police official, the incident occurred when the women were extracting mud. The deceased are identified as Kusum Ahirwar (38) and Roshni (20), said Jatara Police Station Inspector Rajesh Singh Banjara. The trapped women were extricated from the heap of mud with the help of people, he said, adding that Ahirwar and Roshni were pulled out dead. The injured persons, including two women, were rushed to the district hospital, where their condition is stated to be stable, said the inspector. A case has been registered and further investigation is on, he added.

Snow-clearing work on Manali-Leh road begins

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on Monday launched a snow-clearing operation on the Manali-Leh highway, which has been covered in snow for the past 3 months."10 to 40 feet thick ice is making it hard to complete the work," said the Commander.The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Manali informed that a safety check-post was set up for the pedestrians. Moreover, two rescue checks were also set up for the people crossing from Manali and Lahul."People are requested that before crossing Rohtang, they must contact the administration before crossing the pedestal," he added.The 38 Border Road Task Force (BRTF) started the work on the 222-km stretch after the weather improved.Every year, due to heavy snowfall, the Manali-Leh highway completely closes for traffic for 3-6 months. This affects the commute of the people of Lahul-Spiti.

11 killed as Turkish jet carrying hen party crashes in Iran

Eleven women died when a private plane crashed in Iran while flying the daughter of a prominent Turkish businessman and her friends home from a hen party, officials and media reports said today. The Bombardier Challenger 604, carrying Mina Basaran and seven of her friends from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to Istanbul, went down in southwestern Iran on Sunday. Three crew, all women, were also on board. Iran's Civil Aviation Organisation said the plane crashed at 6:09 pm (1439 GMT) on Sunday after the pilot had asked to descend due to a "technical problem". The business jet went down in the Zagros mountains, about 400 kilometres (250 miles) south of Tehran. The aviation agency said six of the eight passengers were Turkish citizens and the other two Spanish. Iranian news agency ISNA reported that the bodies of all 11 on board had been found by rescue teams. IndiGo, GoAir asked to immediately ground 11 'faulty' aircraft

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday ordered GoAir and IndiGo to ground 11 Airbus A-320 New engine option (Neo) aircraft with immediate effect that are fitted with a faulty type of Pratt & Whitney (PW) engines.The DGCA swung into action after the engine of an IndiGo A-320 Neo failed after the takeoff from Ahmedabad on Monday. The Lucknow-bound aircraft had to return and make an emergency landing in Ahmedabad.The regulatory body also warned the two airlines not to refit the spare engines (PW1100 engines beyond serial number 450) that they have in their inventory.Out of the grounded aircraft, eight planes are with IndiGo and three with GoAir.The IndiGo, in a statement, said, "We are in receipt of the communication from the DGCA and we shall promptly comply with the directions of the DGCA. 'High' amounts of heavy metals in ground water in Delhi's Krishna Vihar: Research

The government today said a new research has found the presence of high concentration of heavy metals, including copper and lead, in ground water samples taken from the e-waste dumping site in Krishna Vihar here. In January, researchers at Jamia Milia Islamia published a paper titled 'Assessment of Contamination of Soil and Ground Water due to E-waste Handling'. It indicated presence of heavy metals, Minister of State for Environment Mahesh Sharma said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. "(The report has) indicated presence of higher concentration (against the prescribed drinking water standards) of heavy metals like copper, lead, cadmium, nickel and chromium in the underground water samples collected from the e-waste dumping site situated in an industrial area at Krishna Vihar in Delhi," he said. P&W engine woes: DGCA grounds 11 Airbus planes of IndiGo, GoAir

Aviation watchdog DGCA today ordered IndiGo and GoAir to immediately ground 11 A320 neo planes powered with a certain series of Pratt & Whitney engines after three incidents of mid-air engine failures in less than a month. Concerns over safety of such planes increased with another engine failure forcing emergency landing of IndiGo flight at Ahmedabad airport today, and the regulator has cracked the whip saying that there is no concrete proposal in place at this stage to address the issue. A total of 14 A320 neo aircraft fitted with specific series of engines -- 11 are operated by IndiGo and 3 by GoAir -- have now been grounded. Three IndiGo planes are already on the ground following the problem. Lucky to be alive: Nepal plane crash survivor

Basanta Bohora, a Nepalese and one of the few passengers to escape with injuries in the deadly plane crash here today said he is lucky to be alive. At least 50 people were killed when a Bangladeshi plane crashed and burst into flames while landing at Kathmandu airport. Officials said there were 71 people on board the US-Bangla Airlines plane coming from Dhaka. Bohora, an employee of Raswita International Travels and Tours, recalled that the take-off was normal from Dhaka but when the plane approached the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) for landing in Kathmandu, the aircraft began to behave strangely. Engine failure forces IndiGo flight to return; all safe

As many as 186 passengers on board a Lucknow-bound IndiGo flight from Ahmedabad had a mid-air scare after one of the engines failed, forcing the pilot to return back to the airport. The Airbus A320neo plane, powered by Pratt & Whitney engines, made an emergency landing around 10.04 am at Ahmedabad airport, a little over 40 minutes after taking off from here. However, there was no harm to any passenger, said Manoj Gangal, director of the airport. In a statement, IndiGo said the flight 6E-244 from Ahmedabad-Kolkata (via Lucknow) experienced a technical glitch with its engine No. 2 after take-off. The flight crew carried out actions as per the standard operating procedure and landed back at the airport, following precautionary measures. The incident takes place days after Jayant Sinha, the junior civil aviation minister, claimed that the government had put in place "appropriate safety measures" for the P&W engines. 5 killed in New York copter crash

At least five people died after a helicopter crashed in New York's East River.The CNN quoted authorities as saying that the pilot was the sole survivor of the crash, which took place on Sunday.The New York City Fire Department on Monday said that three of the passengers succumbed to their injuries in the hospital today morning."One of the most difficult parts of the rescue was that five people were tightly harnessed," Nigro said.
