Woman passengers will not be able to avail free bus service in Delhi from August 1, as the government has made the 'Pink Saheli' smart card mandatory for such travel, officials said on Friday. Concerned over the slow adoption of the Pink Saheli card by women commuters, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has also launched a special drive across its buses advising women to get the cards, an official statement said. "With effect from August 1, pink tickets shall be issued only to those women passengers who have a valid Pink Saheli smart card, which they need to tap at the time of boarding. These passengers will continue to avail free bus service as per the terms of the scheme," the DTC said in its order. According to officials, it has been decided to gradually phase out the existing paper-based pink ticket and shift to a smart card-based system for availing the benefit of free bus travel. To encourage use of public transport, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) will run special buses for Delhi government employees to travel from their residence to the nearest metro station and then to the Delhi Secretariat, officials said on Monday. The move comes amid intensifying efforts by the Delhi government to encourage use of public transport in the wake of fuel concerns linked to uncertainties in West Asia. "The special bus services shall facilitate connectivity from Delhi Administration Flats to the nearest metro stations as well as to Delhi Secretariat in accordance with office timings," an order said. The buses will run in morning and evening shifts, commencing 9 am as office-hour traffic peaks, and between 5 pm and 8 pm for homeward commute. Around 54 buses will be run under the special service. The Delhi government on Sunday launched 500 electric buses, taking the total EV fleet of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to 4,000, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said. "This step will not only boost transportation and connectivity in the city but also help in cutting down air pollution," Gupta said at the launch event which was also attended by BJP president Nitin Nabin. The chief minister said by 2028, the DTC plans to increase its total bus fleet to 14,000. "These EV buses will help improving the air quality and the transport needs of the city. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday said that her government is trying to revive the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) whose losses rose to Rs 97,000 crore. Addressing a BJP workers meeting in Rohini, the CM also said that the Delhi government has targeted to strengthen public transport by raising the number of e-buses in the city to 11,000 in next few years. Delhi Transport Corporation has completed the pilot project of rationalisaton of routes for buses in East Delhi, with 692 CNG buses gradually going off roads by the end of this year, officials said. The rationalisation will also be carried out in West region and North region and none of the 12-metre bus route will be discontinued. Even under reduced fleet availability, at least one bus on each route shall be operated, they said. "While IIT-Delhi is carrying out route rationalisation of the 9 metre buses, the DTC and Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System Limited (DIMTS), which operates cluster buses, have jointly carried out route rationalisation of 121 routes for 12 metres long buses. The average daily count of passengers travelling in DTC buses declined from 33.31 lakh in 2019-20 to 25.02 lakh in 2022-23, while the corresponding figure for cluster buses fell from 17.71 lakh to 16.39 lakh, according to the Delhi Economic Survey 2023-24. It rose to 30.15 lakh in the next financial year and then to 33.31 lakh in the 2019-20 fiscal. The Delhi government is planning to offer free travel to people belonging to the third gender in DTC and cluster buses, officials said on Monday. Women are already provided free travel on these buses in the national capital. The free travel scheme for women began in October 2019. "Women are already provided free travel in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses operated by the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Limited (DIMTS). We plan to extend the facility of free travel to people from the third gender too," a senior transport department official said. A Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) low-floor electric bus rammed into more than a dozen vehicles in Rohini South here on Saturday, killing a man, police said. The accident occurred around 2.45 pm near Vishram Chowk in Awantika. The bus hit a car, then an e-rickshaw and two-wheelers parked on the side of a road, they said. Police have the CCTV footage of the crash. A man died on the spot while another was injured, police said, adding that it seems the bus driver lost control of the vehicle. The injured was hospitalised and further investigations are underway, they said.

Over 300 cluster buses have been taken off Delhi roads following the expiry of their contract with the transport department, officials said on Friday. They said the orange buses were inducted into the fleet around 2011 and had become overage. Their contract had expired one-and-a-half years ago but it kept getting renewed, the officials added. Cluster buses are monitored and managed by the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Limited (DIMTS). They were introduced in Delhi with the aim of replacing the killer Blue Line buses that were phased out in 2012. The cluster buses that have gone off the roads used to play in south, southwest, west and outer Delhi. "There are 330 buses that have gone off the roads. These had become overage and will soon be replaced by new buses. The DIMTS has signed a contract and the new buses will start plying soon," an official said. A majority of schemes under the Women and Child Development Department are on track, according to the Delhi government's Outcome Budget for 2022-23 presented in the Assembly on Monday. Out of 63 indicators for assessment, 71 per cent were on track, it said, adding that last year, out of 69 indicators for assessment, 80 per cent were on track. About 3.47 lakh women in distress was given monthly financial assistance in 2022-23 against 3.12 lakh women in distress in 2021-22, it said.
