NDMA organises mock drill to test earthquake readiness in Delhi NCR

The National Disaster Management Authority and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority organised a mock drill on Friday to test earthquake readiness in the National Capital Region, which falls under seismic zone IV, officials said. The mock drill was held in all 11 district of Delhi and neighbouring NCR areas of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, days after the region was hit by tremors on two consecutive days. According to Fire Services officials, 55 water tenders were deployed across Delhi as part of the drill. Some of the areas were the mock drill was held include Municipal Corporation of Delhi school in Kapashera, MCD office in Najafgarh, Vegas Mall in Dwarka, Rao Tularam Memorial Hospital in Jaffarpur Kalan, residential flats in Dwarka Sector-9, Kendriya Vidyalaya in East of Kailash, Jal Vihar in Lajpat Nagar and V3S Mall in Laxmi Nagar, the officials said. 3.9 magnitude earthquake hits Chhattisgarh's Surguja, no damage reported

A tremor of 3.9 magnitude hit Surguja district in north Chhattisgarh on Friday, officials said. No loss of property or lives due to it has been reported so far, they said. "A 3.9 magnitude earthquake was felt in Ambikapur town (the headquarters of Surguja district) around 10.28 am. Its epicentre was 10 km deep from the surface of the earth and around 12 km away from Ambikapur town in West South West (WSW) direction," H P Chandra, meteorologist at Meteorological Centre Raipur, said. "It was a light category earthquake that did not cause any major destruction," he said, adding that it may, however, result in damage to kutcha (mud) houses located within 20 km radius of the epicentre. According to the official, it was the sixth earthquake in Chhattisgarh in the last 10 months and most of them occurred in the northern parts of the state. DDMA to hold mock drill on earthquake disaster in Delhi across districts

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority will organise a mock drill on earthquake diaster across all districts in the national capital on Friday. The mock drill comes days after the national capital and its adjoining areas felt tremors for two days in a row. The DDMA has urged residents to not panic as it is just a mock drill to prepare oneself in case of any such emergencies in future.

Death toll from 6.5 magnitude earthquake in Pak, Afghanistan rises to 21

The death toll from a magnitude 6.5 earthquake that struck much of Pakistan and neighbouring Afghanistan earlier this week rose to 21 on Thursday, after eight more deaths were reported in remote areas, officials said. Ten died in Afghanistan and 11 in Pakistan after the temblor rattled this South Asian region late on Tuesday. More than more than 130 people were reported injured when roofs of hundreds of homes collapsed. Most of the damage was reported in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, bordering Afghanistan. Shafiullah Rahimi, a Taliban spokesperson for the Ministry of Natural Disaster Management, said the quake killed 10 there and injured 60. He said 800 houses were damaged across Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of the magnitude 6.5 quake was 40 kilometers (25 miles) south-southeast of the district of Jurm in Afghanistan's mountainous Hindukush region, bordering Pakistan and Tajikistan. Mock drills being conducted to minimise earthquake damage: Officials

As strong tremors jolted Delhi-NCR and other parts of northern India, officials on Wednesday said awareness programmes and mock drills are some of the measures being taken by the government to minimise earthquake damage. O P Mishra, the director at the Ministry of Earth Sciences' National Centre for Seismology (NCS), said earthquake risk mitigation awareness programmes are being held and mock drills are also being conducted in order to educate people about the dos and don'ts during an earthquake. "Earthquake cannot be stopped but its impact can be minimised by various measures. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is the nodal agency to conduct the mock drills in coordination with other institutes and such drills are conducted at regular intervals," Mishra told PTI. Earthquake of 2.7 magnitude strikes Delhi: National Centre for Seismology

A 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck the national capital on Wednesday, the National Centre for Seismology said. The quake occurred at 4:42 pm. The epicentre was in west Delhi and the depth was five kilometres, it said. 2.8 magnitude earthquake hits Himachal's Kinnaur, no damage reported

A mild intensity earthquake of magnitude 2.8 -- with its epicentre in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur -- hit the state at 12:51 am on Wednesday, but no damage was reported, officials said. Earlier, tremors were felt in almost all parts of the state around 10:17 on Tuesday night following a 6.6 magnitude earthquake whose epicentre was in Afghanistan's Hindu Kush area at a depth of 156 km. People in Shimla, Mandi and several other places ran out of their houses in panic but no loss of life or property has been reported so far, the officials said. Tremors were felt in all the 12 districts of the state but no loss of life or damage to property has been reported, Special Secretary Disaster Management Sudesh Mokta had told The PTI. A powerful earthquake of 6.8-magnitude jolted parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan on Tuesday, the country's meteorologicial department said, sparking panic and forcing residents to flee homes. The epicentre of the earthquake was Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region, while its depth was 180 kilometres, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department. The quake shocks were felt in Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Jhelum, Sheikhupura, Swat, Noeshera, Multan, Swat, Shangla and other places, media reports said. Television footage showed panic-stricken citizens out on the streets from their homes and buildings, the Dawn newspaper reported. So far no loss to life or property has been reported. The quake not only jolted parts of Pakistan, but it was also felt in north India. Earthquakes are common in Pakistan. Mild tremor of 3.2 magnitude felt in Gujarat's Kutch district, no casualty

A tremor of 3.2 magnitude was recorded in Gujarat's Kutch district on Monday morning, according to the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR). District authorities said no damage to life or property was reported. The tremor was recorded at 7:35 AM with its epicentre located around 10 km north-northeast (NNE) from Bhachau city in Kutch district, the ISR said in its latest update. Kutch district is located in a "very high risk" seismic zone, and the occurrence of mild tremors is a regular phenomenon. As per the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA), the state faces a high earthquake risk and witnessed major incidents in 1819, 1845, 1847, 1848, 1864, 1903, 1938, 1956, and 2001. The 2001 Kutch earthquake was the third largest and second most destructive earthquake in India over the last two centuries, killing more than 13,800 people and leaving 1.67 lakh others injured.
