A martial arts coach from Nallasopara in Maharashtra's Palghar district has been booked for allegedly handing corporal punishment to his students, following which at least one of them fell sick, police said Tuesday. The alleged incident occurred on February 8 when the instructor was imparting Karate training to a group of seven students on the terrace of Villy Kids High School. Tulinj police station senior inspector Daniel Ben said the instructor, who is yet to be identified, asked the students to do 200 sit-ups, as punishment. After doing sit-ups, one of the students experienced physical pains and developed high fever, the officer said quoting the complaint lodged by the parents of the student. A case has been registered against the unidentified coach under section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. We will take appropriate action against the instructor after identifying him, Ben said.

Girls outnumber boys in this year's class 10 examination being conducted by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Examination, a top official of the WBBSE said on Monday. WBBSE president Kalyanmoy Ganguly told a press meet here that the percentage of girl students in this year's examination was 56.65 while that of boys was 43.35 per cent. Ganguly said a total of 10,66,000 students would appear in the examination out of which 10,64,980 are regular students. The Secondary Examination, called the Madhyamik examination in Bengal will begin from February 12 and will end on February 22. Ganguly said the sealed packet of the question papers will be opened before the students at 11:45 am, 15 minutes before the start of the examination and all the question papers will have to be distributed among candidates with no excess number of papers lying with the invigilator, to prevent any malpractices. Nearly 2,000 posts of teachers in government colleges of Rajasthan are vacant, minister for higher education Bhanwar Singh Bhati told the state assembly here on Monday. Replying to a question raised by Bhartiya Tribal Party (BTP) legislator Rajkumar Raot, Bhati said the vacancies will soon be filled. He said nearly 2,000 posts of teachers are vacant in the state's 252 government colleges and RPSC has been designated to fill 850 of these posts.
A para-teacher was Monday shot dead by unidentified assailants while he was returning home from school at Saharpur village in Jharkhand's Pakur district, a police officer said. Three empty cartridges and a motorcycle were recovered from the spot, where he was killed, he said. "Maheshwar Hembram (40), a para-teacher in Upgraded Middle Bhillai-Barmasia School in the district, was on his way home when the assailants pumped three bullets into his head and stomach, killing him on the spot," he said. Local people spotted Hembram's body and informed the police, the officer said. According to the officer, Hembram's paternal uncle told police that a land feud or an illicit relation could have led to his killing. "Police are probing the case from all angles. We will be able to give more details in the case only after further investigation," he added.
A parliamentary panel has recommended a law to penalise those found spitting, urinating and throwing garbage in public places, a move aimed at providing a "legal backing" to the government's ambitious Swachh Bharat Mission. The panel has also advocated introducing a chapter on SBM programme in the school syllabus up to primary standard to cultivate cleanliness habits in students. The committee's report on subordinate legislation on rules/regulations governing the implementation of SBM, a flagship programme of the Modi government, in urban and rural areas, was presented to Lok Sabha on Monday. In its report, the committee said it was of the firm opinion that merely bringing in behavioural change and self-regulation may not be sufficient and a central law to enforce the cleanliness drive will help the purpose. Rajasthan School Education Minister Govind Singh Dotasara Monday said the state government will ensure quality and nutritious food availability to school kids under mid-day meal scheme. The minister said the government will mull over introducing biometric system for distribution of food to bring transparency. In reply to a supplementary question asked by BJP legislator Om Prakash Hudla during Question Hour he said there is no proposal to appoint food distribution officer separately under mid-day meal scheme. The minister informed the House that 62.22 lakh students of class 1 to 8th were enrolled under the scheme. A total of Rs 3062.55 crore was spent under the scheme in last five years, he added.
A scuffle broke out between a group of students and some stranded Kashmir-bound passengers outside the Gandhi Memorial Science College here on Monday but timely intervention by police brought the situation under control, officials said. The clash took place when the students came out of the college to protest alleged chanting of "objectionable slogans" by some of the stranded passengers while protesting the alleged failure of the administration to help them in the hour of crisis, the officials said. A three-member bench comprising Justices Gulzar Ahmed, Faisal Arbab and Ijazul Ahsan made the remarks during the hearing of a case regarding the use of contemptuous language in a letter addressed to the top judge by the administrations of two private schools in Islamabad, the Geo TV reported. "How did you have the audacity to term the court's decision regarding hike in school fee 'a draconian judgment'. As many as 40 students of a school here fell ill on Sunday after consuming 'prasad'.The students had eaten the sweets distributed after Basant Panchami celebrations, following which they are said to have developed a medical condition.The students have been admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Two of them are said to be critical.S S Khalid, a doctor at Sadar hospital, said, "40 children have come here till now, one or two are in critical condition. It is a case of food poisoning and they are experiencing abdominal pain and vomiting.
