A decision in this connection was taken at a round table meeting organised by the Committe, which blamed UoH Vice-Chancellor Apparao Podile for destroying the portraits on the varsity's premises and alleged that there was continuous harrassment of Dalit students on the campus. As many as 616 schoolchildren will be performing at the upcoming Republic Day celebrations in the national capital, the Directorate of Education said on Monday. Three schools have been selected by the Directorate of Education and the Defence Ministry to perform at the function and children from East Zone Cultural Centre will also be participating in the event, DoE Assistant Director Romi Johri said. The theme of this year's celebrations is principles of Mahatma Gandhi. "As many as 616 boys and girls will be performing at the upcoming Republic Day celebrations. Preparations for these performances has been going on for nearly three months," Johri said. The Delhi government has directed all schools in the national capital to maintain a minimum of 220 working days in an academic year for upper primary classes. The directions were issued to heads of all state-run and private schools here by the government. "All the head of schools are directed to adhere to the provision laid down in the Right to Education Act (RTE) in respect of mandatory 220 working days in an academic year for upper primary classes," the Directorate of Education said in a communication to school principals. "It is the responsibility of the respective school managements to ensure that the schools under their control must observe the minimum working days and holidays in the academic calendar are approved beforehand," it added. The school heads have also been asked to furnish an undertaking to the education department that the directive will be complied with.

Punjab Education Minister O P Soni said Sunday the state government will regularise 5,178 teachers with full pay scale next month. Talking to media here, Soni said the state government has been making efforts to uplift educational standards in the state. "To achieve this goal, the regularisation of teachers is in process so that they can teach students sincerely," he said. He said 'Sikhya Providers' and "volunteer teachers" will get a pay hike of Rs 1,500 from next month. The minister informed that those teachers who were suspended during their protests had been reinstated and the teachers who were temporarily sent to distant places had been ordered to join at their parent stations. Soni, however, warned teachers take part in protests in future would not be spared and strict action would be taken against them.

A minor student of a state-run tribal residential school in Odisha's Kandhamal district has given birth in her hostel, following which six of its employees were 'disengaged', officials said on Sunday. The 14-year-old girl, a student of class eight, delivered a baby girl in the school hostel on Saturday night, Kandhamal District Welfare Officer (DWO) Charulata Mallick said. The school, Seva Ashram High School, at Daringbadi in Kandhamal district is run by the tribal and rural development department of Odisha. Two school officials were Saturday booked in connection with the death of a student in a water park in Maharashtra's Thane district on Friday, police said. Students of Navjivan School in Nalasopara in neighbouring Palghar district had gone to the water park Friday as part of a school excursion during which a Class X student, identified as Deepak Gupta, reportedly drowned, a Kasarwadavali police official said Sunday. He said the duo had been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder following a complaint filed by the deceased's parents. The Delhi University's ad-hoc teachers, who are on a hunger strike since January 4 demanding their immediate absorption and same benefits as given to permanent teachers, said Saturday they were yet to hear from the varsity administration. A group of 20 ad hoc teachers of the Delhi University began the hunger strike outside the Faculty of Arts. The teachers have also written to the HRD Ministry demanding its intervention in the matter, a professor said. The teachers are demanding their absorption and benefits that are given to permanent employees like paid maternity leave, retirement benefits, etc. He said they have not heard anything from the administration which has been "apathetic" towards them. The professor said they plan to intensify their stir in the coming days if the administration will not hear their plea. There are 4,600 ad-hoc teachers working in the Delhi University. At least 16 students and two women Saturday sustained burn injuries when a gas cylinder of a school van exploded in Gyanpur town here, an official said. The incident took place at around 8 am when the van was ferrying the students to a private school, District Magistrate Rajendra Prasad said. "The children are from class 1 to 5 and between 5-8 years of age," he said. They suffered 30 to 90 per cent burns, Prasad, adding the condition of four is said to be critical. He said the driver of the van, attached to the private school, was using a domestic gas cylinder as fuel for the vehicle. Two women who tried to save the students also suffered burn injuries, Prasad said. The students along with the women are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Varanasi. "As soon as cylinder exploded, the driver fled the spot, and the two women sustained injuries while trying to save the children," the district magistrate said. He said soon after the incident the owner of the school locked the institute .
The suspension of a school headmaster for making a derogatory comment about Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath has been revoked on Nath's instructions. In a statement, Nath said he has forgiven the teacher. The district collector suspended Mukesh Tiwari, headmaster of government-run Kanishta Buniyadi Middle School in Jabalpur, Thursday. Tiwari had allegedly referred to Nath as a "daku" (dacoit) during a meeting at the school. He was suspended by collector Chhavi Bharadwaj after a video where he is purportedly seen making the comment appeared on social media. Nath said in a statement Saturday that after he learnt about the incident, he directed the officials to revoke Tiwari's suspension. A 15-year-old boy committed suicide after being allegedly beaten up by his teacher in a school in Madhya Pradesh's Khandwa district, police said Saturday. Aman Rathore was a Class-IX student of the privately-run M H Public School at Sulgaon village -- around 230 km south of Bhopal -- in Punasa area. While a case of suicide has been registered, nobody has been named as an accused yet, police said. The teenager hanged himself from a ceiling fan at his home on Friday evening when other members of the family were away in the fields, said Dhangaon police station in-charge Harish Rawat. A suicide note, purportedly written by the student, blamed his teacher for his death. The boy's father, Vijay Rathore, shared the suicide note with the media on Saturday.
