SFI forms 'women wall' at DU against patriarchy

The Students' Federation of India formed a "women's wall" at the Delhi University Friday against patriarchy in the national capital and to express solidarity with women who did the same in Kerala earlier this month. Fifty women students gathered outside the Arts faculty holding hands in solidarity and showed strength against the systemic patriarchy deeply rooted in each space, especially educational and university spaces, the SFI said in a statement. A pledge was also taken by the women to fight partriarchy.

Demonstration in JU for immediate student union polls

Two student unions of Jadavpur University on Friday demonstrated in the campus to press for their demand that students union elections, overdue for two years, be held at the earliest. Arts Faculty Students' Union (AFSU) and the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students Union (FETSU) demonstrated before the main administrative building, AFSU leader Debraj Debnath said. No election to the university students' body had taken place in the past two years and said the authorities owed an explanation to the students on this issue, he said. Presi students stop programme on Vivekananda over

A section of students of the Presidency University Friday stopped a programme to mark Saturday's birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda in the university campus objecting to certain comments made by the speakers and forced them to leave the campus. Organised by some teachers and students of the university, the unofficial programme held in open air and some speakers were invited from other colleges of the city. Some of the assembled students raised objections to certain comments made by a speaker on the Jadavpur University, the Jawaharlal Nehru Unversity, Marxism, Maoism and the relevance of Swami Vivekananda among today's youth, one of the invited guests Prof Debashis Chowdhury told PTI. BJP leader threatens Assamese students for protesting against

BJP leader Pradip Dutta Friday courted controversy by threatening Assamese speaking students in Bengali dominated Barak Valley that their admission in the Assam University at Silchar would be barred if they protest against the citizehsip bill. Students union of another university in Guwahati filed an FIR against Dutta for his provocative statement. Dutta, a local leader of the saffron party known for making controversial statements, issued the threat after a section of students of the Assam University raised their voice against the Citizenship Amendment Bill. Protest against Puneri pagadi at Pune university convocation

Student activists shouted slogans against the use of 'Puneri pagadi', a traditional headgear associated with the city, during the 114th convocation ceremony of Savitribai Phule Pune University here Friday. Police detained at least five students following the protest. Some student organisations had opposed the varsity's decision to replace the cap-and-gown worn during convocation with the traditional kurta-pyjama and Puneri pagadi. They allege that by introducing Puneri pagadi, the varsity is toeing RSS' and Hindu right-wing's agenda. Some leaders have alleged that Puneri pagadi is mainly associated with Brahmins. Sisodia announces admission to courses in six new world class skill centres in Delhi

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said Friday that admission to various courses in six new world class skill centres in Delhi is being started. He said a total of 25 such skill centres will be set up in Delhi, 19 of which will be made functional in August. "The admission process is being started in six new world class skill centres (WCSC) for a total of 720 seats in different professional courses to prepare students to acquire professional skills in different fields. CBSE to conduct two levels Mathematics Exam for Class Xth

The CBSE on Friday issued a circular announcing the introduction of two levels of Mathematics for class 10th. The students can now opt for one of the levels according to their needs.Accepting the unrealistic stress the subject can have on students who do not wish to further pursue the subject, CBSE has decided to introduce a Basic and a Standard Mathematics for Class X students for CBSE Board Examinations 2020.The present level and curriculum of mathematics would continue to remain the same.In its notification the CBSE also highlighted, "There shall not be two levels of assessment/Examination for class IX. First level would be the same as the existing one, and the other would be an earlier level. The nomenclature for the two Examinations will be; Mathematics-Standard for the existing level of examination, and Mathematics-Basic for the easier level of examination.

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the creation of the post of vice chancellor for India's first rail and transportation university, National Rail & Transport Institute (NRTI).The vice-chancellor shall be the principal executive officer of the institution and shall exercise general supervision and control over the affairs of the institution. Fill up SAT positions, HC tells Odisha govt

The Orissa High Court Thursday directed the state government to take expeditious measures to fill up the vacancies in various benches of the State Administrative Tribunal (SAT). In an interim order, a division bench headed by Chief Justice K S Jhaveri passed the order while adjudicating over a public interest litigation (PIL) in this connection. While the combined SAT benches have the sanctioned strength for eight members, including that of the chairman, there are now only two members, including an acting chairman, the petitioner said. Over 50,000 applications are now pending disposal in all the four benches of the SAT, including that of its principal bench here, the petitioner said.

School headmaster suspended over comment on Kamal Nath

The headmaster of a government school here was suspended Thursday for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Chief Minister Kamal Nath. Jabalpur District Collector Chhavi Bharadwaj suspended Mukesh Tiwari, the headmaster of government-run Kanishta Buniyadi Middle School. Tiwari had allegedly made derogatory remarks against Nath at a meeting held in the school two days ago. A video where Tiwari is purportedly seen making the remarks went viral on social media. On examination of the video, the teacher was prima facie found violating the Madhya Pradesh Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, the collector's order read.

More colleges, varsity join anti-citizenship bill movement

Students of the Gauhati University and several colleges Thursday joined other higher educational institutes across Assam to protest the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill, with one student body threatening to take steps like self immolation if the Bill is not withdrawn.
