Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia Saturday said the exercise of the education department to verify residence proof of school students was aimed at restraining the "mafia" involved in admission frauds. The students' wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress on Saturday urged the state education minister to find out a solution as students in several colleges in the city are agitating after they were not allowed to appear for an examination due to shortage of attendance. The students were to sit for first semester examination of the Calcutta University but only those with a minimum of 60 per cent attendance were allowed. The administrative officer of a naval housing colony in Mumbai has been arrested by the CBI for allegedly taking bribe for allowing a tuition to run from the colony. Mohammed Hussain Mujawar, the accused, is Commander and Administrative Officer of Naval Civilian Housing Colony (NCHC) in suburban Kanjur Marg, a CBI release said Saturday. Mujawar was caught Friday while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000, it said. He had allegedly demanded Rs 25,000 from a person to allow him to run tuition classes in the colony, and later agreed to accept Rs 20,000, it said. Following a complaint, the CBI laid a trapand caught Mujawar red-handed. Further probe is on, the release said.
The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) will give unsuccessful candidates a second chance to pass the examination in the same year, from 2019. CISCE secretary Gerry Arathoon said compartmental exams will be held for ISC candidates having failed in the fourth subject and ICSE candidates in the fifth subject, in the same year, shortly after publication of the respective board results. Arathoon was addressing participants at the Association of Schools for the Indian School Certificate Conference here on Friday. Students of Class 12, having passed in English and two other subjects but not in the fourth subject and Class 10 candidates, making it in English and three other subjects, but failing in the fifth subject, won't have to waste one year under the new system, he said. The Goa government aims to double the number of incubation centres in the state by 2020 providing the working space for incubating 200 companies, a senior functionary has said. The Goa State Innovation Council (GSINC) has been formed with the mandate to encourage more incubation centres, specially in the institutes providing technological education. "The Council is on the drive to double the number of incubation centres in the State from existing seven to fifteen by the year 2020. "The incubation Centres that are existing in Goa are working on Information Technology (IT) and IT-Enabled Services (ITES) besides few in food processing sector," GSINC chairman Jose Manuel Noronha told PTI. Students of two colleges in the city held demonstrations on Friday after they were denied permission to appear for an upcoming examinations due to shortage of attendance, officials said. While affected students of the South City college put up road blockade in Golpark area, those of the Gurudas College agitated inside the college campus in Maniktala in north Kolkata. Around 300 students of the South City college blockaded Gariahat Road (South) for over an hour. They were demanding relaxation of the the minimum 60 per cent attendance criteria to appear for university examinations. West Bengal cabinet Friday gave its nod to set up welfare board for fire fighters on the lines of the one for the police, state Fire and Emergency Services Minister Firhad Hakim said. We will soon formulate the welfare board for the fire department just like what has been done for the police department. The cabinet has given its nod today, Hakim said after the Cabinet meeting here at the state secretariat. Besides, senior officials of the department, there will be representatives from each sections of the department in the board, he said. Meanwhile, the Cabinet also gave its nod for the recruitment of 6878 teachers in 2198 primary and upper primary schools in the state.
