Those teachers defying rules of university, UGC being denied leave: JNU Registrar

The Jawaharlal Nehru University on Sunday said leaves are not being granted to "only those faculty members who are defying the rules of the varsity and that of the UGC", after a number of teachers alleged that they were denied leave for not marking their own attendance. The JNU executive council, in its meeting in August, had decided that university teachers need to mark their attendance. The varsity cited the UGC Regulations on Minimum Qualifications for appointment of teachers and other academic staff in universities and colleges and Measures for the Maintenance of Standards In Higher Education, 2018, adopted by the statutory body of JNU. "The workload of teachers in full employment should not be less than 40 hours a week for 30 working weeks (180 teaching days) in an academic year. Ensure classes are held regularly, Partha tells teachers' body

West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee on Sunday asked the members of Trinamool Congress-controlled primary teachers' association to ensure regular classes in schools. "I have urged the members of our association to see to it that teachers regularly take classes and students also record regular attendance... We must ensure this," he said. The minister was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a conference of the 'Paschimbanga Trinamool Prathamik Sikshak Samity'. Coming down heavily on Left-backed primary teachers' organisation, Chatterjee said, "Where were these protesters who are now hitting the streets with various demands, when the condition of primary teachers was worse in the tenure of the previous regime?" He said since the TMC came to power in West Bengal, 73,000 teachers were recruited at the primary level and many para-teachers (contractual teachers at elementary level) were made permanent. LGB students at higher risk of suicides, self-harm

University students who are lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) are at higher risk of self-harm and attempting suicide than their heterosexual counterparts, a study has found. The study, by researchers from the University of Manchester and Leeds Beckett University in the UK, shows that low self-esteem may explain the increased risk of self-harm in LGB students. Low self-esteem may result in LGB students who have faced discrimination or have struggled to accept or share their sexuality with others, according to the study published in the journal Archives of Suicide Research. "This study confirms that lesbian, gay or bisexual young people have elevated rates of suicidality and self-harm compared with heterosexual youth," said Elizabeth McDermott of Lancaster University. "We know much less about how LGB young people seek help for their mental health problems, or what type of support would be effective," said McDermott. Of the LGB students who completed an online questionnaire, 65 per cent ...

'English medium schools may not benefit India's poorest students'

Using English as medium of instruction for very young and underprivileged children in India -- especially those who speak a different language at home -- may be holding them back from learning basic school skills, scientists claim. Researchers are trying to decode why Indian children -- who normally know more than one language -- do not enjoy the same cognitive and learning advantages seen in multilingual students in the West. A four-year project, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Reading in the UK and project partners in Karnataka, Hyderabad and New Delhi, aims to find out why in a country where multilingualism is so common, the benefits and advantages of speaking more than one language, observed in Europe for instance, do not apply. Rather, Indian children show low levels of learning basic school skills, researchers said. According to Professor Ianthi Tsimpli from Cambridge University in the UK, the answers to this paradox may lie within the dataset she and ..
