3 women college students injured in fight at sports event

Three women students of a reputed college in the city were injured in a fight during an inter-college sports event held at the college ground Thursday, police said. The incident happened in the afternoon when an altercation broke out during the sports event at the St Paul's College ground in Amherst Street police station area. Three students Rimpa Ghosh, Shampa Das and Tanurima Ghosh were injured badly when the three were engaged in a fight, they said. They were admitted to a hospital. Nobody was arrested in connection with the incident. police said.

R A Mashelkar addresses 100th convocation of BHU

Eminent scientist R A Mashelkar exhorted students of the prestigious Banaras Hindu University (BHU) here to focus on right education and pursue lifelong learning. Addressing the 100th convocation of BHU, Mashelkar told the students, "...pursue lifelong learning and if you do this, I am sure each one of you will reach great heights." He said that in view of the great disruption that technology is going to bring, India will have to move from "right to education" to "right education". A former Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Mashelkar also congratulated parents and teachers for giving students the "best gift of their life, education". On the occasion, as many as 31 medals were presented to students for securing first position under various faculties in the year 2017 and 2018. SC sets aside HC order giving 196 marks to students who wrote NEET-UG in Tamil

The Supreme Court on Thursday set aside the Madras High Court order awarding 196 grace marks to the NEET-UG 2018 aspirants who had opted to write the test in Tamil language on account of error in translation. The top court directed that from year 2019-20, NEET-UG examination will be held by the newly constituted National Testing Agency instead of the CBSE. A bench of justices S A Bobde and L Nageswara Rao said that "the method adopted by the Madurai bench of Madras High Court is manifestly arbitrary and unjustified and cannot be sustained". "For these reasons, we set aside the impugned judgment of the High Court of Madras dated July 10, 2018. We direct that from the year 2019-20 onwards the NEET-UG Examination will be conducted by the National Testing Agency and the bilingual examination will be conducted after the question paper is translated...," the bench said. Govt to survey Presidency hostel progress, says Partha

A top official of the West Bengal education department would survey the progress of the work in the Presidency University's Hindu Hotel, which is under renovation, on November 26, minister Partha Chatterjee said Thursday. A section of the Presidency students have been protesting against the prolonged renovation of Hindu Hostel affecting the outstation students. The hostel, located beside the university building is being repaired by the state PWD for over three years, while its boarders have been accommodated in a rented premises at New Town, which is quite far. A delegation of the agitating students met Education Minister Partha Chatterjee at the state Assembly when he assured them that the education secretary would review the progress of works in the hostel on November 26. AMU students' union alleges BJP MP trying to 'sully' varsity's name

Aligarh Muslim University Students' Union (AMUSU) has accused the BJP MP from Aligarh, Satish Gautam, of attempting to "sully" the name of the institution by making baseless charges against it. The students' community made the remarks a day after Gautam reportedly alleged that the AMU administration was being run on "Talibani ideology". HRD Ministry issues Letter of Intent to IIMC to grant it deemed university status

The HRD Ministry has issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) to grant it deemed university status, an official said Thursday. The University Grants Commission (UGC) had in August recommended the HRD Ministry to grant deemed university status to the IIMC. "An LoI has been issued to the IIMC and certain anomalies have been pointed out. Once they are removed, the institute will be granted deemed university status," HRD Higher Education Secretary R Subramanyam told PTI. The institute, one of the prestigious journalism schools in the country which functions under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, offers postgraduate diploma courses in journalism, advertising and public relations. Cabinet appraised of MoUs on science and tech with Russia and Uzbekistan

The Cabinet was Thursday appraised about a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between India and Russia for promotion of science and technology through exchange of students, researchers and scientists. The pact between the Atal Innovation Mission and Talent and Success Fund of Russia was signed on October 5 during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to India. Indian students engage more in extra classes, co-curricular activities than peers: Cambridge study

Indian students engage in more extra classes and co-curricular activities than their peers in other countries, according to a Cambridge study. Almost two-third of Indian students take extra tuition for key subjects after school, 72 per cent participate in co-curricular activities and 74 per cent say they play sports regularly in school. They also rank high on the time spent doing homework, with 40 per cent spending two to four hours on their homework every day while a good 37 per cent spend the same time over the weekend too. The findings have been revealed in Global Education Census conducted by education group Cambridge Assessment International Education (Cambridge International), which is part of the Cambridge University. Centre to set up medical college in Dadra and Nagar Haveli

The Centre will set up a medical college in Dadra and Nagar Haveli to improve tertiary care facilities available to the people of the union territory and the adjoining areas. The decision to build the medical college at a cost of Rs 189 was taken at a meeting of the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, here Thursday, an official release said. The medical college at Silvassa in the union territory administration of Dadra and Nagar Haveli will be set up at a capital cost of Rs 189 crore in two years with yearly intake of 150 students. The project will be completed by 2019-20 and the construction and capital expenditure will be incurred as per the norms of Medical Council of India (MCI) and extant guidelines of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Seven school children, driver killed in Satna accident

At least seven school children and a driver were killed when a bus collided with a school van at Birsinghpur in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, a police official said. At least eight others were injured in the accident, police said. "As per reports, at least seven school children travelling in the school van and its driver were killed in the accident," Satna district Superintendent of Police (SP) Santosh Singh Gaur told PTI. The deceased children were students of Lucky Convent School in Birsinghpur, police said.
