Police foil teachers protest in Punjab

The police on Sunday lathi-charged and used water cannons to disburse a large number of agitating teachers who were heading to protest outside Punjab Education Minister's O P Soni residence here. The police said they were forced to lathi-charge the agitating teachers when they "purposefully" removed barricades that had been fixed at different locations on the route leading to the house of O P Soni here. There was a scuffle between police and agitating teachers. In the incident, some policemen and a few teachers were hurt. The agitating teachers were dispersed later, DCP Lakhbir Singh. The teachers' group raised anti-government slogans "for not getting their full pay scale." "We were earlier working on contract basis, but a condition was recently put for hiring us as regular employees in the Punjab Education department with starting salary of Rs 15,300. India provides financial assistance to construct three schools in Nepal

India has provided financial assistance for the construction of three schools in Kaski district of western Nepal. One secondary school and two multiple campuses have been constructed in Kaski with the grant assistance from the Indian government, according to a statement issued by the Indian Embassy here. Minister for Culture and Tourism Rabindra Adhikari inaugurated Saraswati Tika Higher Secondary School at Lekhnath Municipality, built with the Indian assistance of Rs 37.10 million. Likewise, the construction of Laxmi Adarsha Multiple Campus in Lekhnath and Gupteshwor Mahadev Multiple Campus in Pokhara have also been completed under the grant assistance by India. Centre probing multi-crore post-matric scholarship scam: Vijay Sampla

The central government is conducting an inquiry into an alleged multi-crore scam in post-matric scholarships for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Other Backward Classes students, Union minister Vijay Samla said Sunday. Talking to PTI on phone, the Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment said, "We got reports about the scam from not only Himachal Pradesh but other parts of the country as well. Scam of Rs 450 crore was also reported from my home state Punjab." "Taking cognisance of these reports, the Social Justice and Empowerment Department is already conducting an inquiry into the matter," Sampla said. NIT-K student ends life; professor blamed for death

A 20-year old student of the National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NIT-K) here jumped to death from his department building, sparking off a protest by other students who alleged constant nagging by a professor forced him to take his life, police said. After the suicide Saturday, students in the institute gathered on the campus in large numbers and raised slogans against the professor who had allegedly humiliated the third year mechanical engineering student Anand Pathak, they said. Pathak was running short of attendance and was often pulled up by the professor who had told him that he would fail in the semester examination, the students alleged. The protesting students demanded suspension of the professor and setting up of a committee to enquire into the issue, police said adding investigations were on.

Extramarks launches online app for IIT-JEE aspirants

KITE Introduces new 'KOOL' Open Online Learning programme

: The Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) has rolled out-- KOOL, its Online Open Learning training platform. The platform can be used to train teachers, students and the general public. To start with, teachers would be trained and the first batch will commence next month. College students choose smartphones over food: Study

College students prefer being deprived of food over parting with their smartphones, a study has found. The findings, published in the journal Addictive Behaviors, suggest that smartphones can be more reinforcing than food for college students. "In this study, we provide evidence for the first time that smartphones are reinforcing," said Sara O'Donnell, a scientist at University at Buffalo in the US. "We also found that when deprived of both food and smartphones, students were much more motivated to work for time to use their smartphone, and were willing to part with more hypothetical money to gain access to their phone," she said. The researchers wanted to explore whether smartphones could function as a reinforcing behaviour, the same way that food, drugs and alcohol are reinforcers. "The frequency with which we use our cellphones every day is astounding, with estimates ranging from five to nine hours a day," O'Donnell said. Nepal: 3 educational institutions set up by India inaugurated

Three educational institutions that have been built by India were inaugurated in Nepal on Saturday.The Shree Saraswati Tika Higher Secondary School has been built with an Indian assistance of 37.10 million Nepalese Rupees. Nepal's Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Rabindra Adhikari inaugurated the school in a ceremony that was also attended by Dr Ajay Kumar, the Embassy of India in Nepal's Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) and the Mayor of Kaski Man Bahadur GC in attendance.On the same day, the DCM and Kaski's Mayor also inaugurated the Shree Laxmi Adarsha Multiple Campus in Lekhnath and the Shree Gupteshwor Mahadev Multiple Campus in Pokhara. FIR lodged in HP scholarship scam

The police have registered a case in connection with an alleged scam in Himachal Pradesh government scholarships for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Other Backward Classes students, police said Saturday. Several students had complained that they had not received their post-matric scholarships. An FIR was registered Friday under various sections of the IPC at Shimla East police station by a state education department official, Shakti Bhushan, who had conducted preliminary inquiry into the scam, the police said. The probe was ordered by Himachal Pradesh Education Secretary Arun Sharma. Bhushan submitted his report in August. During the inquiry, it was found that 250 students of Kangra district took admissions in Fatehpur and Vadukar (Karnataka) centres of Lovely Professional University (LPU), an education department official said. JK govt set to launch ESDM scheme

The Department of Information Technology (DIT) will soon launch the Electronic System Design and Maintenance (ESDM) scheme in Jammu and Kashmir to train 5,000 students in the current financial year. Foundation laid for Shillong Juvenile school

Meghalaya High Court Chief Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir on Saturday laid the foundation stone of the Shillong Juvenile School at Mawkasiang here. The Rs 5 crore school will have classes from 1 to 10 and will be built on a 25,000 sq ft plot. Addressing the function, Mir said, Education is one of the primary rehabilitative services that must be provided to children staying in juvenile homes. Noted classical dancer Sonal Mansingh said Saturday women face several challenges in the society but should never allow men to infringe on their personal space.
