Pak shall be 'punished' for activities detrimental to India: Army commander

The Army's Northern Command chief, Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, said Friday Pakistan shall be "punished" if it carries out activities detrimental to India and asserted that befitting replies were given to the neighbouring nation for violating ceasefire. The Army commander's comments come in the wake of fatalities in sniping incidents along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Jammu region in the last few days. "The message is very clear for the troops on the ground that should Pakistan not stop from carrying out activities, which are detrimental to our national interest along the LoC, they (Pakistan) shall be punished accordingly," Lt Gen Singh told PTI on the sidelines of a function here to felicitate teachers of Army Goodwill schools. HC orders appointment of counsellors in all WB schools

The Calcutta High Court Friday directed authorities to appoint counsellors in about one lakh educational institutions in West Bengal to help safeguard students against sexual abuse. Justice Nadira Patherya ordered that counsellors will have to be appointed to all educational institutions in the state in a phased manner within one year. The judge observed that progress in implementation of a report by an amicus curiae, assisted by a court-appointed panel of educationists, on safeguarding pupils in educational institutions from sexual abuse needs to be monitored from time to time. Justice Patherya directed that the report placed by amicus curiae Phiroze Edulji be kept on record and steps be taken to implement its suggestions. She directed the state and the Centre to file a progress report after six months. UP district adopts unique way for primary education

The Bahraich district administration in Uttar Pradesh has embarked on a campaign to give a new dimension to imparting primary education, roping in people across different fields to interact with the children for almost one hour a week. Elaborating about the campaign, 'Vidyaa Daan, Ek Aadarsh Daan' (Imparting Education, An Ideal Donation), District Magistrate Mala Srivastava said: "Intellectuals of the society, be it the government officials, retired employees, teachers in schools and colleges, educated housewives or youngsters, were urged to join the campaign (which was started in September). "Today, in more than 400 government primary schools, the campaign has started giving positive results and people themselves are taking out time to teach the children." She added that concrete efforts were being made to provide quality education in the government primary schools. 16 children injured as school vehicle overturns

16 children were injured, four of them seriously, when a vehicle carrying them to school overturned near Aaspur crossing on Friday morning, police said. The children of D.K Public School were travelling in a pick up vehicle when the driver lost control while trying to save a pedestrian, police said. The children, all under the age of 10, were injured. Four of them have been seriously injured and admitted to a hospital. A youth crossing the road at that time was also injured and admitted to the district hospital, police said. The school belongs to Samajwadi Party leader Jogendra Singh Yadav, who is also former chairman of the Zila Panchayat.

Presidency university students start sit-in demonstration

Students of the Presidency University Thursday started a sit-in demonstration in the main building of the varsity demanding immediate accommodation in the Hindu hostel. The sit-in began before the room of the Dean of Students this evening as the November 15 deadline given by the university authorities for completing renovation of the two wards of the hostel and throwing open the hostel for students expired without the work being over, Sayan Chakraborty, a spokesman of the agitators, said. Ankiv Baisoya quits DUSU presidency, suspended from outfit: ABVP; NSUI says too late

The ABVP said on Thursday DUSU president Ankiv Baisoya has resigned from his post after it asked him to do so, and has also been suspended from the students outfit till an inquiry into allegations that he gained admission to the Delhi University on the basis of a fake degree. While the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) said the decision was taken to maintain the "genuineness" of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU), the move drew criticism from the NSUI and AISA, which claimed it was done under pressure ahead of the high court hearing on November 20. China protests to S Korea over varsity clubbing Tibet booth with India at intl fest

China has protested to South Korea over one of its universities clubbing the booth of Tibet with India at an international festival. The booth also displayed a flag which is a pro-independence symbol adopted by the "Tibetan government in exile" together with India's national flag, state-run Global Times reported. Greater participation of women in science and technology

President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday underscored the need for greater participation of women in the fields of science and technology. Addressing the eighth convocation ceremony of National Institute of Technology, Patna, he lauded "the overall academic performance by girls" but expressed concern over "a different trend that is visible in institutes devoted to the study of science and technology". Free IAS coaching academy proposed in Coimbator

: The Tamil Nadu government has proposed to set up a free IAS coaching academy in the district, Minister of Municipal Administration S P Velumani said on Thursday. Speaking after distributing laptops to students of 10 Corporation Schools here, the Minister said the students from not only this district but also from other districts can benefit from the academy. Gujarat: two college students drown while taking selfie

Two students of a polytechnic drowned in a lake while taking a selfie in Bhavnagar city of Gujarat Thursday, police said. The deceased were identified as Harvijaysinh Gohil (17) and Vishwaraj Gohil (18). Vishwaraj's father Kishor Gohil told police that his son had left home in the morning saying he was going to a tuition with his friend. "Primary investigation revealed that they visited the Bor Talav lake in the city where they fell into water while taking a selfie," said police sub-inspector S P Agravat. A security guard alerted the fire brigade after learning about the mishap, he said. "It took almost one and a half hours to find the bodies," said fire brigade official Pradyumansinh Jadeja.

ABVP asks DUSU president to step down after fake degree row

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has asked Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) president Ankiv Baisoya, who got mired neck-deep into a fake degree row just after he took over as DUSU president in September, to resign from his post. HC quashes appointment of CPI(M) MLA's wife as Asst Professor

The Kerala High Court on Thursday set aside the appointment of the wife of a CPI(M) MLA to the post of Assistant Professor on contract basis at Kannur University. Setting aside the appointment of Sahala P M, wife of Thalassery MLA Shamseer A M, at the School of Pedagogical Sciences, Justice A M Muhammed Mustaque ordered the university to appoint first rank holder Bindu M P to the post. Bindu had filed a petition challenging the appointment. In her plea, Bindu claimed that she had secured first rank in the walk-in-interview held for the post of Assistant Professor in Science on contract basis in June this year. But the university had appointed the second rank holder to the post. The university submitted that Sahala was appointed on the basis of reservation norms in contract appointment. The petitioner challenged it, saying no reservation rules are applicable in contract appointments. AP govt to set up I-Hub in Vizag to promote digital learning:

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu Thursday said the state government has accorded highest priority for education, particularly digital learning, to make it stress-free. Addressing delegates at UNESCO-MGIEP's Tech 2018 conference here, Naidu said the government has established 5,000 digital classrooms and 4,000 virtual classrooms in thestate and the number would be increased soon.
