Sonowal urges COBSE to show integrity while conducting exams

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Thursday urged the Council of Boards of School Education (COBSE) in India to show integrity, skill and diligence while conducting examinations to reinforce people's faith in the examination system of the country. The Board members must adopt modern and advanced technologies for conducting examinations and moulding the system to suit the changing needs, he said inaugurating the 47th Annual Conference of COBSE here. He also appreciated the role played by school boards in successfully and transparently conducting examinations over the years in the country. Agree to school safety measures proposed by amicus curiae: Centre to Calcutta HC

The Centre on Thursday told the Calcutta High Court that it was agreeable to the guidelines on safety of students in schools as proposed by the court-appointed amicus curiae. Appearing for the Centre, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Kaushik Chanda told the court that Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 already provides for security measures of school students, but the government was, nevertheless, agreeable to the Standards of Procedure (SOP) proposed by the amicus curiae as additional initiative. Appearing for the state, Additional Advocate General Abhratosh Majumdar also agreed to the SOP, while suggesting minor changes. Amicus curiae Firoze Edulji, who compiled the proposed SOP following consultations with a court-appointed panel of educationists, was directed by Justice Nadira Patherya to submit another report after including the views of the Centre and the state government. Delhi govt officials to review teaching methods in its schools recording poor performance

Officials of the Delhi government's education department will now be attending classes in its schools which have recorded poor performances in their jurisdiction to identify loopholes in teaching and suggest measures for improvement. The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting that was held to review the results of the mid-term examinations. "It has been recommended that the district and zonal deputy directors of education attend those classes which have recorded poor performances in their jurisdiction to identify if the teaching there is poor or not up to standard," a senior Directorate of Education (DoE) official said. The officials will identify the loopholes in teaching and suggest measures for improvement or recommend the hiring of additional resource persons using the School Management Committee (SMC) fund, he said. In run up to the year end examination, teachers and heads of schools have been instructed to identify those topics which carry more marks in problem subjects .

Motihari Univ V-C Arvind Aggarwal relieved of his responsibilities following degree controversy

Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU) Vice-Chancellor Arvind Kumar Agarwal who had resigned following a controversy over his academic credentials was relieved of his responsibilities on Thursday. Agarwal, who was under the government's radar over allegations for allegedly giving false information while applying for the post, will now be joining his parent department in the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala. "Consequent upon his request and further acceptance of his resignation by the Visitor to the University, as communicated by the HRD Ministry, Arvind Kumar Agarwal, has been relieved of the responsibility of Vice Chancellor to enable him to join his parent department," an official order by the university in Motihari said. The V-C of the Bihar-based central university had tendered his resignation last month. ReT scheme frozen to facilitate regularisation of teachers in J-K

The Jammu and Kashmir administration will formally stop the Rehabar-e-Taleem (ReT) scheme with a provision that the teachers already engaged under it would continue to be governed by the scheme till their regularization or otherwise. The decision taken at the State Administrative Council (SAC) meeting would help the school education department to consolidate the position and rationalize the staff strength in various schools, an official spokesman said on Thursday. He said that the decision would also help in moving towards a single cadre of teachers rather than multiple types of staff performing the same work. During the 19th SAC meeting, which was held under the chairmanship of Governor Satya Pal Malik here on Wednesday, the ReT scheme was revied viz-a-viz its efficacy in the changed education scenario. J-K guv wants 5 new medical colleges functional by 2019

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik has called for expeditious completion of all necessary infrastructural and other facilities to ensure that the five new medical colleges in the state start functioning from the next academic session. The five new medical colleges are coming up at Rajouri, Doda, Kathua, Anantnag and Baramulla for which the Centre has sanctioned Rs 189 crore each. Malik also directed for fast-tracking recruitment of faculty and para-medical staff and completing all necessary requirements to fulfill MCI norms for formally starting the academic activities in these colleges next year. UP: 8-year-old thrashed by teacher for vomiting in class

An eight-year-old boy was thrashed with a stick by his school teacher in Uttar Pradesh's Moradabad after he vomited in the classroom.The incident took place on Children's Day at a school in Moradabad, following which the minor boy's father filed a complaint in Thakurdwara Police station.Speaking to ANI, the young boy narrated the ordeal and confessed to having been beaten up at school by his teacher, Rubina.Superintendent of Police (SP) Uday Shankar Singh said a complaint has been registered in the matter and the child has been sent for medical examination."Investigation in the matter is underway," he added.

Liaison officers to be positioned in major cities to assist J&K students

The Jammu and Kashmir government Wednesday approved positioning of designated liaison officers in 10 major cities across the country to assist students of the state pursuing higher education there. The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of State Administrative Council (SAC), which was chaired by Governor Satya Pal Malik, an official spokesman said. The SAC approved positioning of designated liaison officers of state government in New Delhi, Noida, Chandigarh, Aligarh, Bhopal, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and Jaipur to coordinate with students of the state pursuing higher education there, whenever they are faced with the situations related to regional identity," the spokesman said. Administrative clearance must to start new school: minister

Administrative clearance, besides that from the education department, would soon be made mandatory to start a new school in West Bengal, Education minister Partha Chatterjee said Wednesday. Only after the administrative clearance, the authorities of the prospective school will be able to seek the permission from education department, he said. He, however, did not clarify who will provide the administrative clearance. "Necessary legislation will be framed in this regard very soon," Chatterjee told reporters on the sidelines of a merit scholarship programme here. On a reported incident of change of name of the place of a school from Islampur to Ishwarpur, he said "In our daily correspondence with that school, we have not found any proof that the institution has done it." Odisha unveils plan to encourage full-time research

To encourage full-time research, the state government Wednesday unveiled Odisha University Research and Innovation Incentivization Plan (OURIIP).
