Crimea school reopens after gun massacre

The college in Crimea where a teenage gunman killed 20 people last week reopened Wednesday with tearful students attending classes in different buildings as some parents chose to withdraw their children. The Kerch technical college, which admits children from the age of 14, lost 20 students and staff last Wednesday when student Vladislav Roslyakov went on a shooting rampage. The 18-year-old also set off explosives in one of the school's buildings. That section, which was seriously damaged in the explosion, has now been closed off and classes rescheduled in other buildings nearby. Police were overseeing security on the grounds, an AFP correspondent observed. About one hundred final-year students have been sent away on internships to allow the college to function on limited premises, Crimea governor Sergei Aksyonov told local media. Teachers, parents key to children's' scientific temperament

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday exhorted teachers and parents to contribute towards building scientific temperament among children from an early age. Sonowal, inaugurating the 26th state-level conference of National Children's Science Congress 2018 here, said evil forces in the society can only be eliminated by good citizens, who can take the nation forward. "Teachers and parents must play their roles in building scientific temperament among the children from an early age," he said. Govt school principal caught taking bribe in Udaipur

A government school principal was caught taking bribe of Rs 15,000 in Rajasthan's Udaipur district Wednesday, an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) official said. The accused Dilip Jain (53) posted at a senior secondary school in Kanuwada of Udaipur had demanded Rs 15,000 to release security deposit of Rs 4 lakh for construction works, ACB DSP Rajiv Joshi said. The accused was arrested and booked under sections of Prevention of Corruption Act, the official said, adding that further investigation is on.

EU's education fair in India to begin Thursday

The European Union is organising an education fair beginning Thursday to connect European higher education institutes with Indian students. Through a series of web-based seminars, the students will get an opportunity to explore a wide range of education courses offered by 54 leading universities from 20 countries of the European Union (EU), an official statement said Wednesday. In the four-day fair, aspiring students will get a chance to directly interact with officials from leading higher education institutions (HEIs) in the web seminars. "This is the third edition of the EU Higher Education Virtual Fair a unique opportunity to connect some of the best European academic institutions with Indian students. WB NUJS suspends 8 students

The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) has suspended eight male students for their alleged involvement in a brawl in the campus in September, sources in the institute said Wednesday. The premier law school notified this order on October 11 after an inquiry, which was launched on September 25. The law school notification, the copy of which was made available to the media Wednesday, said that "...Acts of physical violence [were] committed by [the accused] students on the intervening night of September 19 and September 20 on the campus resulting in a complete breakdown of discipline..." It said that three students, including two final year LLB students, were suspended from the NUJS for the winter semester this year. The two final year students will, however, be allowed to complete their 10th semester next year, the notification said. 4 children injured as gunmen open fire at school in Pakistan

At least four children were injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire at a school in Pakistan's Quetta city in the restive Balochistan province. The gunmen on motorcycles opened fire on the gate of Danish Kadah School - a private school located in the city suburbs, the Dawn reported. Four students received bullet injuries on their legs in the firing. The injured students -- three boys and a girl - are aged 9 to 12 years. The injured children were taken to the Civil Hospital, and are now in stable condition. Balochistan Home Minister Mir Saleem Ahmed Khosa condemned the firing incident and said those involved in the attack will be apprehended soon. In 2014, Taliban militants stormed an army-run school in Peshawar, killing 149 people, mostly children. The Human Rights Watch in a report last year said that attacks by the Taliban and other militant groups disrupted the education of hundreds of thousands of children, particularly girls, in Pakistan.

IIT Madras disappointed over not granted IoE status; writes to HRD Min

The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has written to Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar expressing disappointment over not figuring in the list of Institutes of Eminence (IoE) despite a recommendation from the UGC-mandated selection panel. According to sources, the premier institution has argued that it matched the calibre of the selected institutions on various parameters and it being ignored in the IoE race had impacted the morale of students and teachers. The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry had in July granted 'Institutions of Eminence' status to three public and private institutes each, enabling them to get full autonomy and special incentives to project them as "world class universities". While the ministry will grant Rs 1,000 crore funds to the three public institutions in the next five years, the private institutes will not be eligible for government funding. Unregistered coaching centres put on notice in Jammu

The Department of Education has put unregistered coaching centres and tutorials on notice in Jammu, officials said Wednesday. Acting on the directives of Director of School Education Rakesh Kumar Srangal, a team of Directorate of School Education Jammu (DSEJ), headed by Joint Director School Education Latif Choudhary, conducted surprise inspections at various private tuitions and coaching centres. The team examined records regarding registration, fee, faculty, infrastructure and other requirements. On-the-spot directions were issued to the centre owners to ensure full compliance of the regulations, an official of the education department said. The inspections were carried out to list and crack the whip on all unregistered coaching institutions in Jammu division, he said. Women demand compensation over Japan university discrimination

A group of women is demanding compensation from a Japanese medical university that admitted routinely altering the scores of female applicants to keep them out, lawyers said Wednesday. More than 20 former applicants are demanding Tokyo Medical University make amends for the scandal, which led to the discovery of similar discrimination in other medical schools after prompting a government investigation. Lawyers for the women, who were rejected by the school after taking entrance exams at the school from 2006 onwards, are expected to present a claim to the university next week. They acknowledge they cannot yet prove whether they were rejected because of discrimination or insufficient test scores, but are calling on the university to disclose their results. They are also asking for 100,000 yen (USD 890) each in compensation for "mental anguish" and for the university to reimburse money they paid to take the entrance exams, travel to the school and stay in the area during the application .

Over 900 students of the National Institute of Technology, Uttarakhand have left en massefor theirhomes to press for their demand that the institute be shifted from its present "unsafe" location along National Highway 58 to a permanent campus, officials said. IIT KGP students on mission mode to reduce plastics in campus

A group of students at the IIT Kharagpur is on a mission mode to reduce usage of single-use plastic within the campus. The students, numbering around 30, are in the process of forming a students society which will tackle environmental issues and work towards creating awareness in collecting and disposing plastic waste, including e-waste, an IIT Kharagpur statement said Wednesday. The students are themselves not using single-use plastic for over four months and now wanted to inspire other students in the campus to follow their example, it said. Blood donation helps eradicate caste-based discrimination: HPU V-C

Vice-chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) Sikander Kumar said blood donation helps in eradication of caste-based discrimination in society. Inaugurating a blood donation camp, organised by a non-government organisation (NGO) Umang Foundation to mark Valmiki Jayanti at the varsity campus, the V-C pledged to donate his eyes along with 30 other persons. As many as 60 persons donated blood at the camp. The V-C lauded the efforts of the foundation in the field of social service.
