Students lift sit-in protest at JU

The Arts Faculty Students Union (AFSU) today withdrew its sit-in protest outside Jadavpur University Vice-chancellor Suranjan Das's chamber after the dean of Arts said he was quitting from the admission process, an AFSU leader said. The AFSU lifted the nine-hour-long demonstration at 5 am following which the VC, pro-VC Pradip Ghosh and other senior varsity officials left for home, a teacher of Jadavpur University Teachers' Association (JUTA) said. The students were protesting against the university's decision to put the history admission process on hold following the demand for review of history entrance test answer scripts of all applicants, as raised by a section of guardians. Manipur varsity VC (in-charge) informs Centre of the impasse

Manipur University Vice-Chancellor (in-charge) Prof W Vishwanath has written a letter to the Centre that the agitating bodies have refused to cooperate with the Fact Finding Committee to probe the allegations of financial and administrative irregularities against the VC A P Pandey. The agitating bodies have sought for an Independent High Power Committee under the Commission of Enquiry Act 1952 against Pandey, who is currently on a month-long leave, Vishwanath said in the letter to the HRD Ministry yesterday. Indian-American high schooler wins International Geography Bee World Championship

Indian-American high school student Avi Goel has won the world championship at the International Geography Bee's junior varsity division held in Berlin, Germany, last month. Avi, 14, a tenth grader at Silver Creek High School in Evergreen, San Jose, CA, won a gold medal in seven out of the 10 medal events, and a silver medal in two of the events, topping the overall medals table. He also bagged the top spot in all the three events counting towards the world championship title: the International Geography Exam, the International Geography Showdown, and the International Geography Bee. JNU admn withdrew permission for convention on frivolous grounds: Students' body

The JNU students' union (JNUSU) today alleged that the administration withdrew the permission for a convention organised to highlight the varsity's contributions to India. Today, while the JNU VC led administration, after destroying the university, organised a photo-op convocation in the name of distribution of degrees of research scholars the JNUSU gave a call for a convention celebrating the contributions of JNU towards India, the students' body said in a statement. The JNU administration denied permission for holding the 'Save JNU Convention' at School of Social Science (SSS)-I auditorium citing "frivolous" reasons, it said. Dubbing the move a "shameful and disgraceful act", the JNUSU claimed this happened after all the required processes were completed and the forms submitted to the administration. Over 63,500 schools have gone digital in Maha: CM

More than 63,500 schools in Maharashtra became digital up to June this year, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said here today. He called for laying more emphasis on e-learning and e-school projects in the era of Information Technology. Fadnavis today chaired a review meeting of school education department at his official residence 'Varsha'. School Education Minister Vinod Tawde, Additional Principal Secretary of the School Education Department Vandana Krishna, among others, attended the meeting. Student commits suicide in Sikar

A Class 12 student allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence in Rajasthan's Sikar district today, the police said. The deceased was identified as Badriprasad, who studied at a private school, they said. His parents alleged that he was beaten up by the owner of his school Ramdev Singh over some issue, following which the boy hanged himself, the police added. The matter is being probed, they said.

MA 1st year student commits suicide

:An MA first-year student of city-based University of Hyderabad allegedly committed suicide in his hostel room at the campus tonight, police said. Rajnish (25),a native ofUttarakhand, was found hanging from the ceiling fan by one of his classmates at around 8.30 PM, they said, adding no suicide note was found. Based on preliminary investigation, police said Rajnish had reportedly cancelled his admission from the course and had planned to return to Uttarakhand.

55 students flee from Jharkhand school in mark of protest

Fifty-five students of a school in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district today fled from the educational institution during a physical activity, to protest the transfer of four teachers, police said. Out of the 55 students, 45 returned to the school in Majhgaon in the evening, Superintendent of Police, Kranthi Kumar Gadidesi said. "It was nothing serious but the girls decided to leave the school in protest against the transfer of four teachers," he said. A police team is on the lookout for the remaining students, the officer said. Altogether 68 students of Class 10 were out for a running activity in the morning, when 55 of them escaped from the school premises. Police said the students were of the view that the teachers' transfer would hamper studies, as the school has a shortage of faculty. District officials concerned had recently initiated action against the teachers, following below-average performance of the school in the 2018 matriculation examination, they said.

Maha sent only five proposals for OBC hostels under Central

The Maharashtra government has forwarded only five proposals for setting up hostels for OBC students under a Central scheme which was announced in 2014-15, an OBC department official said today. Interestingly, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had yesterday announced that the state government would construct hostels for OBC students in 19 districts, and funds will be made available for the purpose. "The Central government had announced a scheme to set up hostels for OBC students (boys and girls) in 2014-15. The scheme was meant to benefit the students from economically weaker background. The objective was that these students could stay in these hostels at a district place and pursue better education," the official said. The OBC department is currently headed by the chief minister. Baidyanath Labh appointed VC of Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Bihar

Prof Baidyanath Labh has been appointed the vice-chancellor of Nava Nalanda Mahavihara (NNM) University Bihar, according to an order issued today by the Personnel Ministry. Labh, at present, is a professor at the Department of Buddhist Studies in Jammu University. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his appointment to the post for a period of five years, it said. The government of Bihar had established a research institute called "Magadh Institute of Post-Graduate Studies and Research in Pali and Allied Languages and Buddhist Learning" at Nalanda in 1951. It later came to be known as Nava Nalanda Mahavihara (NNM). In November 2006, the University Grant Commission accorded it the status of a deemed to be University. It's present campus, about 100 km from Patna, is close to the ruins of the ancient University of Nalanda.

The Gautam Buddh Nagar administration decided today to rope in educational institutes to spread awareness against gutkha and other tobacco products besides stepping up action on smokers in public places. At a meeting of various committees of the District Tobacco Programme, District Magistrate Brajesh Narayan Singh issued instructions to all officials concerned to ensure effective implementation of the state government's policies on tobacco control, according to an official statement. Presidency University Vice-Chancellor Anuradha Lohia today met the agitating students for the second time in three days, while students vowed to continue their five-day-old stir for immediate accommodation to an old hostel building under renovation. HC summons Maha transport dept officer over govt resolution on school buses

The Bombay High Court today summoned the additional commissioner of the Maharashtra Transport Department after it was brought to the court's notice that the government had recently issued a resolution that effectively nullified a previous HC order regulating school buses. A bench of justices Naresh Patil and G S Kulkarni directed the additional commissioner to remain present in the court tomorrow over the government resolution (GR) that was issued by the transport department on May 19 this year. As per the resolution, the state permitted three-wheelers and vans with seating capacity of less than 12, to ferry children to and from their schools. However, as per the central government's norms, notified last year, school buses are vehicles that have a seating capacity of 13 passengers and more, excluding the driver.
