Dalit cook row: Students now complain of food poisoning

A few students of a school, mired in controversy over appointment of a Dalit woman for cooking noon meal, took ill after eating the food in a suspected case of food poisoning even as she claimed it to be a conspiracy to throw her out. As many as 12 students of Thirumalaigoundanmpalayam government school in neighbouring Tirupur district were hospitalised yesterday as they complained of vomiting after taking the noon meal, police said. China sentences 6 in graduate exam cheating scheme

Chinese state media reports say six people have been imprisoned for up to four years for their part in a scheme to cheat on the country's national graduate school exam. Exam takers were provided with wireless transmitters and receivers and told to read the questions out loud. Researchers off-site would then find the answers in textbooks and read them to the test takers through their receivers. Among those sentenced yesterday were two exam takers who helped recruit clients. It wasn't clear how much the cheaters paid for the service or what punishment they received, although permanent disqualification from the exams is the usual sanction in such cases. Exam scores make up the overwhelming preponderance of criteria for acceptance in the Chinese education system from early education onward.

The unprecedented protests by the students demanding better road safety laws in Bangladesh today fizzled out, with thousands of agitators returning to their classes after a nine-day-long stir that paralysed the country and left over 150 people injured in clashes with riot police. The agitation prompted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Cabinet to approve a tougher transport law and launch a crackdown on reckless driving. At the height of the protest, students were seen managing Dhaka's notorious traffic and checking whether drivers of the cars and buses have valid licences and proof of roadworthiness of their vehicles. Thousands of students of schools, colleges and universities took to the street on July 29, demanding strict implementation of road safety rules, following the death of two teenage students - a boy and a girl - by a speeding bus. Had the renovation work of the hostel building been completed on time, the situation might not have come to such a pass, Chatterjee told reporters. The Hindu Hostel, adjoining the College Street institution, had been shut down for repairs on July 29, 2015 and 150 boarders were shifted to a rented accommodation at New Town, which is around 18 km from the university. The Presidency authorities had last year assured the students that all the six blocks of the hostel would be opened for the boarders after completion of renovation work by the first week of ..
