Sambalpuri handloom uniform for GMU students

Authorities of Gangadhar Meher University (GMU) in western Odisha have introduced Sambalpuri dress code for first year students from the current academic session. The new Sambalpuri dress code was introduced for students of plus III first year and PG first year, vice-chancellor (VC) Atanu Pati said. It will not be enforced on old students, he said. "There should be dress code for the institution. It highlights equality. The introduction of Sambalpuri dress code will certainly encourage the traditional weavers of the region," the VC said. The new dress code for the students was unveiled by the VC on Wednesday on the occasion of Sambalpuri Day. 12 girls' schools burnt down in Pakistan

Twelve girls' schools have been burnt down by unidentified persons in coordinated attacks in Pakistan's restive Gilgit-Baltistan, triggering protest by local residents who sought safety for educational institutions which are often attacked by the militants, a media report said today. The schools in Chilas town, about 130-kilometre from Gilgit, were targeted late last night by unidentified men who also damaged school property across Diamer district, police said. "Explosions were also set off in two schools," Geo News reported, quoting police officials. Following the attacks, local residents staged a protest at Siddique Akbar Chowk demanding the arrest of culprits and seeking safety for educational institutes which are often targeted by the militants, it said. French Embassy conducts orientation session for students going to France

The French Embassy today conducted an orientation session for Indian students heading to France for higher studies. "France ranks third in terms of receiving the highest number of international students after US and UK. Indian students have been increasingly opting for France for their higher studies," a senior official at the Embassy said. During "Campus-France", a pre-departure session, the officials answered queries of students about visa application procedure, accommodation, practical advice about daily life in the country, culture and various avenues of learning French.

Obscene pics pop up on tablets given to mark attendance,

Several government schools in Chhattisgarh have complained that obscene pictures pop up on the screens of computer tablets provided for recording bio-metric attendance of teachers and students. Authorities are now taking steps to solve the problem, said a government official. Teachers, in particular from schools in Durg, Surguja and Bastar districts, have complained that the tablets given for recording attendance and update information related to school activities show obscene pictures on screen. "The tablets come with Internet connection. So prima facie it seems that somebody, while watching or downloading some application, might have clicked on some spam message with obscene pictures," said Nilesh Soni, project manager at the state IT department. Spam and free advertisements appear sometimes when free apps are downloaded, and when such advertisements are clicked, unwanted content pops up, he said. Sex education not imparted in schools; TN tells HC

The Tamil Nadu government today informed the Madras High Court that sex education was not being imparted in schools as there would be resistance from the public. Assistant Inspector General Maheswaran submitted an affidavit on behalf of the home secretary and the director general of police in response to a series of questions raised by Justice N Kirubakaran to trace the reasons for the rise in sexual offences against women and children. The court had asked the government whether steps were taken to introduce 'age appropriate sex education' in school curriculum to educate students and clear their doubts or any wrong notions they might have, as per the directions of the high court issued in 2015. Responding to the query, the authorities said sex education was not imparted as there would be resistance from the public. Manipur University Vice-Chancellor goes on leave

Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University Prof A P Pandey has proceeded on leave for a month starting from today, officials said. Students of the university are on strike for more than two months demanding the VC's resignation and an independent probe against him. The Union HRD Ministry has approved the VC's leave, they said, adding that "the state government feared a law and order situation and hence recommended the Union HRD Ministry to send Pandey on leave." Proposal for enhancing income ceiling of parents for scholarship to OBC students under consideration

the government said today that a proposal was under consideration for enhancement of income ceiling for parents from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.50 lakh under the centrally-sponsored scheme of the post-matric scholarship for OBC students in the country. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Vijay Sampla said welfare schemes for OBCs, EBCs, DNTs are "funds limited". "There is a proposal under examination for enhancement of income ceiling for parents under the Post-Matric Scholarship for OBC students in India from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.50 lakh," he told the Rajya Sabha. "To award scholarship to the most needy students, the income ceiling have been fixed accordingly," he said. The income ceiling under pre-matric scholarship for SCs and OBCs has been fixed at Rs 2.50 lakh, while post-matric scholarship for SCs has been fixed at Rs 2.50 lakh, for OBCs and Economically Backward Classes at Rs 1 lakh.

Not allowing educated women to pursue career tragic, says Sundararajan

Families in India which do not allow educated women to pursue their dream careers are examples of "first grade tragedy" as the country misses the opportunity to harness their talent, Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan said today. Citing example of her home state Kerala which leads the nation in terms of literacy, Sundararajan said women there are highly educated but families get them married after they acquire certain degrees. "In Kerala, we have peculiar syndrome where women outnumber men as students but majority of them never go out to realise their professional dreams because their parents believe that once they have acquired a degree then they should get married. DMK urges Pondy govt to reduce fees for MBBS course in pvt

The DMK today urged Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy to ensure that the private medical colleges in the Union Territory brought down the tuition fees for the MBBS course. In a press release, DMK convener R Siva claimed that the fees had spiralled several times over the years landing students in utter chaos. When private players set up colleges here some years ago, the fees charged by them for the MBBS course was very minimum. However, it had been revised upward. Siva sought the intervention of the territorial government to bring down the fees for the course. DMK is an ally of the ruling Congress in Puducherry.

College mag caught in row over poem and articles

A college in North Kerala is caught in a row over its decision not to permit printing of a magazine being brought out by its students as it contains a poem allegedly hurting the sentiments of the Christian community. According to authorities of the christian management-run college at Wayanad, the draft copy of the magazine contains not only a four-line poem, which was "highly objectionable," but also has certain articles which can cause "difficulties" to some people. "A four-member editorial board has been constituted which will see if there are any objectionable contents in the magazine," college principal A O Roy told PTI. Roy said the magazine cannot be brought out in the name of the college and the institution also cannot take any responsibility for it. 150 new varsities set up in last three years, max in Gujarat: HRD

A total of 150 new universities were set up during the last three years with maximum of them being in Gujarat followed by Madhya Pradesh. The information was shared by Minister of State for HRD Satyapal Singh in a written response to a question in Rajya Sabha. A total of 19 universities were set up in Gujarat during last three years followed by Madhya Pradesh (16), Uttar Pradesh (13), Maharashtra (12) and Karnataka. A total of 1,575 new colleges were set up during the period. The maximum colleges were set up in Uttar Pradesh (626) followed by Karnataka (161) and Maharashtra (157).

2 students killed, four others injured in school roof collapse

Two girl students, aged around ten years, died and four others were injured today when a portion of a roof of a stage collapsed at a private school in Kukatpally here, police said. The seven students were practising karate when the roof came crashing down, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Madhapur Zone) A Venkateshwar Rao said. A girl student was injured seriously, police said, adding that all the injured have been admitted to hospital. School authorities were being questioned in connection with the incident.

Cash-for-marks racket unearthed at Anna varsity, 10 professors booked

The Tamil Nadu Police has booked 10 professors, including a former controller of examinations of the Anna University, for allegedly "receiving money" from some engineering students and giving them extra marks during re-evaluation, officials said today. The anti-corruption wing of the state police conducted searches at the premises related to the 10 professors and seized incriminating documents. The action was taken based on information received from "reliable sources" that the accused had received money from engineering students, who had appeared for exams in 2017, and had granted them "excess marks" during re-evaluation, they said.
