Gauhati varsity plays key role in nurturing young minds: Guv

Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi today urged the fraternity at Gauhati University to intensify its efforts in creating "capable human resources" who would contribute to the growth of the state, a release issued by Raj Bhavan said here. Mukhi, who is also the chancellor of the university, interacted with the faculty members, officers, employees and students this morning, requesting them to work resolutely for the overall development of the Assam. The role of Gauhati University in nurturing young minds is of immense importance, as students who graduates from there would be able to bring about positive changes in the society, he said after reviewing the infrastructural development work at the institute. The governor, on this occasion, also welcomed suggestions from the students and faculty members for the growth of the university.

Two teachers arrested for misbehaving with girl students

Two teachers of a school in West Bengal's Nadia district were arrested by police for allegedly misbehaving with two girl students of class 9 , a police officer said today. The two teachers of the school were arrested after the parents of the two girls lodged police complaint against them yesterday evening, the officer said. One of the girl alleged that a teacher had hugged her and also proposed marriage to her, police said. Another student had alleged that a teacher had touched her inappropriately and misbehaved with her. Both the incidents took place in the school last week, the police added. Both the teachers were produced before a court here today which remanded them to 14-days judicial custody.

Evaluation errors: Marks changed in over 4,000 cases, says CBSE

Marks have changed after re-evaluation of answer sheets of Class 12 exam in over 4,000 cases which accounts for 0.075 per cent of total evaluated copies, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) said today. The board, which is facing flak over evaluation errors, revealed the statistics and said action has also been initiated against over 200 teachers for "callous evaluation". "Over 61 lakh copies were evaluated for Class 12 out of which there were 66,876 applications for the first stage verification process. Finally, there were changes in marks in only 4,632 cases which is just 0.075 per cent of the total copies evaluated," CBSE Secretary Anurag Tripathi said. It was informed that changes in marks were made in 6.9 per cent of the 66,876 applications received. The secretary also pointed out that of the 4,632 cases, where there has been an increase in marks, 3,200 of them fall in the increase by 1-5 marks category, which otherwise is considered zero error. 18% GST likely to have major impact on coaching classes and private institutes

UGC asks varsities to announce guidelines for re-evaluation of answer sheets

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked all universities to bring out clear guidelines detailing the procedure prescribed by the varsities for re-evaluation of answer sheets. "The Central Information Commission (CIC) has advised the HRD Ministry to instruct Vice Chancellors and Registrars of all the universities to suo-motu bring out guidelines for re-evaluation of answer sheets detailing the procedure prescribed thereunder for the benefit of the larger students community impacted by such decisions and in larger public interest involved in the matter," the UGC said in a communication to universities. The UGC asked the universities to give suitable directions to all the colleges affiliated to them for compliance of the CIC orders. "Accordingly, you are requested to initiate appropriate necessary action in your university and also give suitable direction to all the colleges affiliated to your university and ensure compliance to the CIC orders," the UGC added.

Two school boys drown in Kuakhai river in Bhubaneswar

Two high school students of the state capital drowned while taking bath in river Kuakhai today, police said. Of the six students who had gone to the river, one of them stood on the river bank while five others slipped in the deep water while taking bath, locals said. The local fishermen initially could rescue three boys. Fire brigade personnel rescued two boys in a critical condition and rushed them to a hospital, where they were declared dead, Sukant Sethi, the fire officer, who monitored the rescue operation, said. The students were identified as Jagamohan Sahu and Safiq Digal of Unit-9 Boys High School here. They had gone to the river in the outskirts of the city after bunking classes, a teacher said. In the middle of the search operation, Sethi said, the fire brigade team rescued a woman, who was being swept away by the river. The woman was identified as Kanchan, a home guard working at Mancheswar police station.

Delhi govt issues fresh guidelines to schools on student safety

The Delhi government has issued fresh guidelines to schools for ensuring students' safety, with a special focus on the security of the pupils travelling to schools by private vans. Earlier in the month, the city government had directed all schools here to discourage parents from hiring private vans to ferry their wards, claiming that most of such vehicles operate illegally and pose a threat to safety of children. "Female teaching or non-teaching staff should be deployed in every vehicle ferrying girl students. In case of private vehicles hired by the parents, the cab drivers' character and antecedent verifications should be provided to the school by the parents," the guidelines issued by the Directorate of Education (DoE) said. The schools have been asked to maintain a register about children coming by private vans. President Kovind reaches Chhattisgarh for 2-day visit

President Ram Nath Kovind, who is on a two-day visit to Chhattisgarh arrived in Bastar's Jagdalpur on Wednesday. Prez arrives in Chhattisgarh on two-day visit

President Ram Nath Kovind arrived today in Chhattisgarh's Bastar district on a two-day visit to the region during which he will take part in several programmes. Chief Minister Raman Singh along with some of his cabinet colleagues and other officials received the president at Jagdalpur airport at around 10.30 am, a government official told PTI. Soon after his arrival, Kovind left for Jawanga in Dantewada district in a helicopter. From Jawanga, he will reach Heeranar village by road, where he will interact with farmers and self-help groups (SHGs) at the Integrated Farming System centre, the official said. 399 posts of teachers vacant in Goa govt schools

As many as 399 posts of teachers are lying vacant in government-run schools in Goa, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has said. In a written reply given in the state Assembly yesterday, Parrikar, who also holds the education portfolio, said 192 posts of teachers were vacant in high schools, 109 in higher secondary schools and 90 in primary schools. Besides, eight posts of middle school teachers were also unfilled, he told the House.

'Colleges charging full fees from Maratha students will face

The Maharashtra government has issued a circular for the second time directing all the colleges to not charge full fees from the students of the Maratha community under the Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj scholarship. The move is seen as a bid to calm down the protesters demanding reservation in government jobs and education under OBC quota. The protests for the quota turned violent today, a day after a member of the community jumped into the Godavari river in Aurangabad district. "The government will reimburse 50 per cent fees of those students whose parents' annual income is less than Rs 8 lakh under the scholarship scheme," Tawde said. Manipur CM asks MUSU and MUTA to call off their strike

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh today asked the Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) and Manipur University Teacher's Association (MUTA) to call off their strike demanding the removal of the varsity Vice-Chancellor A P Pandey. A delegation of the MUSU and MUTA today called on the chief minister and held talks with him regarding their demand. The academic activities at the university have been under suspension for over 55-days as teachers, students and staff associations are agitating for Pandey's removal. CBI registers FIR in NIOS examination irregularities

The CBI has filed a case of alleged malpractices in the secondary and higher secondary examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). The case pertains to examination conducted by the NIOS at its centres in Sehore, Ratlam and Umaria in Madhya Pradesh. The agency has taken action on a complaint from the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. It was alleged that a number of students who did not take the crucial class 10 and 12 examinations at these centres were declared as passed by the NIOS. According to the FIR, it was achieved through forgery and manipulations committed in the attendance sheets of the examination centres, answer sheets etc of the students. "The answer sheets of the secondary and higher secondary examinees did not bear the NIOS logo," it said.
