JNU to hold convocation next month after 46 years

Almost 46 years after it held its first convocation, the Jawaharlal Nehru University will be hosting its second convocation next month for awarding degrees to PhD scholars, the varsity said. In a notification posted on its website, the university said that the second convocation will be held on August 8 at its Convention Centre. "All research scholars, who have completed the requirements for the Ph.D. degree, between January 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018 are eligible for the conferment of Ph.D. degree at the convocation," it said. The first convocation of the university was held in 1972, when G Parthasarathi was the vice chancellor.

Access to higher education still a privilege in India: Kovind

President Ram Nath Kovind today said that although India was the third-largest education system in the world, access to higher education was still a privilege in the country. He said India had made "impressive gains" in widening the higher education ecosystem by setting up new institutions, but a greater challenge was improving its quality. Kovind was speaking at the 30th Annual Convocation of Goa University at Dona Paula near here. "I request young men and women to bear in mind that access to higher education is a still a privilege in India. It is the contribution of countless citizens, many of whom will not even know you personally, that sustain institutions such as Goa University," Kovind said. NTA to conduct NET, NEET, JEE (Mains) exams

Newly formed National Testing Agency (NTA) would- now conduct the national- level examinations -- NET, NEET, JEE (Mains) -- that were organised by the CBSE, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said today. National Eligibility Test (NET) would be conducted in December and JEE (Mains) twice a year, in January and April. NEET would be conducted in February and May, the minister said. NET, a qualifying test for admission in higher educational institutions in the country, would be the first exam to be conducted by the newly formed body. The NTA would also conduct National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) and Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test(GPAT), Javadekar said. The students can appear both the times in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and the best of the two scores would be taken in account for admission, the minister said. Bihar girl raped for months by principal, two teachers and 16 students

A class 9 girl has alleged that she was raped and blackmailed by her school's principal, two teachers and 16 students in Bihar's Saran district, police said today. The principal and a teacher were arrested and four students apprehended for allegedly raping and blackmailing the girl, Superintendent of Police (Saran) Harkishore Rai told PTI. In her complaint, the girl alleged that she was raped and subsequently blackmailed for seven months by the principal, two teachers and 16 students. The school is located in Parsagarh village which comes under the jurisdiction of Ekma police station of Saran district, about 35 kms from the district headquarters of Chapra. The SP has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under Deputy Superintendent of Police Ajay Kumar Singh, who visited the school yesterday, and made the arrests. HC asks Delhi govt to file report on plea against denial of admission in schools

The Delhi High Court today asked the Delhi government to file action taken report on a plea alleging that over 180 students have been "unjustly" denied admission in government schools. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice to the AAP government on a petition and a letter which sought direction to the Directorate of Education to forthwith grant admission to these students in classes as sought by them for the academic year 2018-19. The court asked the government to examine the matter and file its action taken report and listed the matter for further hearing on July 9. The plea filed by NGO Social Jurist, through advocate Ashok Agarwal, claimed that hundreds of students have been denied admission by Delhi government schools on flimsy grounds. Lucknow University reopens next week after violence

The Lucknow University which closed after some teachers were attacked on Wednesday will reopen on July 10, its website said today as the Allahabad High Court pulled up the police for not acting swiftly. Lucknow University was closed till further orders after some expelled students, holding a protest on the campus over the alleged denial of admission, assaulted about a dozen teachers. Principal, teacher arrested for gang rape in Bihar

The Bihar Police on Friday arrested a principal, a teacher and two students over the allegations of gang rape of a school girl in an area near Chhapra.The girl, in her complaint to the police, said that she was blackmailed and gang-raped by the principal, two teachers and 15 students for the last seven months, ever since her father went to jail.A case has been registered in Chhapra's Parsagarh that falls under Ekma police station based on the girl's statement.The girl has alleged that ever since her father went to jail in December 2017, the principal and the teachers of the Deepeshwar Gyan Niketan gang-raped her.In total, two teachers (including the principal) and 15 students have been booked on the basis of the victim's statement.The girl narrated the ordeal to her father when he was released from jail. Hary govt to install solar energy systems in schools

The Haryana government is planning to install solar energy systems in educational institutes of the state in a bid to bring more students to classrooms by reducing power outages. The initiative comes at a time when only 48 per cent students of state-run schools passed in the Haryana board examinations of class 10 this year. Compared to this, 90 per cent of government school students passed the CBSE class 10 board in Delhi. The installation of solar energy systems in schools is part of the state government's ambitious 'Mhara Gaon Jagmag Gaon' program which aims at providing electricity to rural areas of the state," Rameshwar Singh, nodal officer of renewable energy, Gurgaon range said. Haryana CM launches plantation campaign

With a view to conserve environment, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar today launched a state-wide plantation campaign from the Narwana sub-division of the district. The campaign would to be carried out from July to August this year. School students from class 6 to 12 would take part in it. They would plant one sapling each during the rainy season and would also be responsible to take care of these plants, Khattar said. The chief minister flagged off more than two dozen tractors and trolleys loaded with plants. He said that under this campaign, the students could plant the saplings at their school, courtyard of their home, canal, streams, parks or any other public place. The children would also give names to the plant as per their choice with the date of plantation specified on it, he said.
